Palm Beach Symphony is dedicated to advancing the field of music through its tri-fold mission of engaging, educang, and entertaining. In order to encourage performance excellence, nurture advanced studies in music, help promising young arsts with financial needs and promote the professional growth of young performers, we are pleased to present the 1st Annual Mary Hilem Taylor Music Scholarship Compeon. 1. Students must be 18-24 years of age at the time of the application deadline date.

2. Students must demonstrate residency and/or full-time enrollment or admittance for a music degree program at a private or public College, University, or Conservatory in South Florida as of September 1, 2021. Verification of such from the enrolled institution must be included as a part of the application materials.

3. Students must demonstrate financial needs, as presented by:

a. Inclusion of his/her most recent income tax form 1040. If student is being supported by a parent, or parents, and included in their tax return Form 1040, the most recent filing of the parents’ form must be included as a part of the application materials. b. Inclusion of a letter from applicant and/or parents describing the circumstances in detail relating to the financial need. Eligibility based on financial need is at the discretion of the Palm Beach Symphony.

4. Scholarship awards may be used to help further the student’s musical education – assist with music festivals, national or international music competitions, pay for instrument repairs or accessories, upgrade their current instrument, or cover college expenses.

5. Applicants will be asked to describe in detail how they plan to use the monetary award.

6. Three winners will be selected each year - First Place, Second Place, Third Place – along with an Audience Choice Award.

7. From the video auditions, the judges will make their selections of students who will move onto the final round of the competition. 8. Decisions about the first round of the competition will be communicated via email by September 28, 2021.

9. The final round of the competition will take place on October 23, 2021, - in front of a live audience in the Vera Lea Rinker Hall at Palm Beach Atlantic University, West Palm Beach. Finalists must perform in person. There will be a drawing of lots in advance to determine the performance order.

10. An accompanist will be provided to all finalists for one rehearsal as well as theirperformance in the final round of the competition. Finalists wishing to bring theirown accompanist may do so at their own expense.

11. Judges will announce their decisions at the conclusion of the final round. Judgesdecisions are final.

1. All winners will perform in a chamber concert together with members of the Palm Beach Symphony in May 24, 2022 at the Stiller Auditorium, Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach.

2. The audience will choose their favorite performer that evening, and that winner will receive a $500 cash prize in addition to his/her competition award.

3. Travel expenses will be covered for the winners to Palm Beach if necessary. (date and time to be agreed upon in advance.)

4. First place competition winners are not eligible to apply and compete again in the competition in any instrumental category.

1. Submit a completed online application form (see below) together with a non-refundable application fee of $ 40 using online payment button at the end of the application form by the application paperwork deadline date of September 1, 2021.

2. Submit a biography of 350 words or less plus a 4-color headshot at a minimum of 300dpi.

3. Submit an electronic copy of the score for each performed composition for the judges.

4. Submit a recorded audition video by the deadline date. Video shall be submitted via email as attached file or a downloadable link.

5. Once all application requirements have been received, you will be sent a confirmation email.

6. Late applications or changes will not be accepted.

1. Applicants must prepare and perform two required and one choice repertoire of musical works or movements.

2. Instrument specific required repertoire and choice selections lists may be found on the Application Instructions and Audition Repertoire document.

3. Audition repertoire must be performed from memory.

4. Repeats in the repertoire should not be taken.

5. A total of approximately 25 minutes are allotted for each audition.

6. Repertoire must be recorded in the order of musical period, beginning with the earliest period.

7. Please send music scores in recorded order and indicate the order number on top of each piece.

8. Accompanied and unaccompanied solo repertoire is accepted.

9. Applicants may use live or pre-recorded accompaniment for their accompanied repertoire.

10. Changes to repertoire after submission will not be accepted.

1. Applicants must record their entire video audition including all works in one continuous take.

2. Video audition may be submitted via Dropbox, We-Transfer, saved to a Google Drive or One Drive, or emailed as a video link.

3. Save and name your file with your first and last name, instrument and “Taylor Competition”.

4. Acceptable video format includes MP4 or .MOV.

5. Video audition must not contain any edits or audio/video effects.

6. Video audition must be a recent recording for the sole purpose of the competition. Previous recordings will not be accepted.

7. Speaking on the video audition is not allowed.

8. All works in the audition must be performed from memory, with no music stand in front of you.

9. The camera should be placed in order to clearly see applicant’s hands, fingers, arms and face.

10. Applicants and their accompanists must both be viewable on the video audition recording.

11. External microphones and other high fidelity audio devices are strongly recommended.

12. Video auditions that do not adhere to the repertoire and video requirements may cause the applicant to be disqualified from the competition.

1. Your recording device can be a cell phone, tablet, camera, etc. You do NOT have to rent fancy recording equipment.

2. Make sure there is 1-3 seconds of silence before the beginning of each piece.

3. Before recording, film a test. Perform the first few notes of your selection, then watch and listen to it on playback.

4. Use a fixed point of view for your camera with you being the main focus. Shoot straight on, leaving the camera in one location. Do not pan or move the camera. Camera should be no closer than waist up.

5. Check for appropriate balance with the accompanist.

6. Make sure the acoustics in the room are suitable for a recording. Practice your piece in the space. Make sure there is no noise coming from other rooms near you as you record.

7. When recording with a tablet or cellphone, use the landscape/horizontal mode for best results.

8. Do not edit within a piece; no effects or post performance alterations.

9. After you have recorded your piece, watch the playback to make sure you can be seen and the music heard.

10. When uploading, be sure to upload to your computer first and verify that image is upright (not sideways) and plays smoothly.
