UNIVERSITY OF OREGON
College of DesignA unique ecosystem, the College of Design comprises not only creative
practitioners—artists, architects, and designers—but also social scientists,
humanities scholars, engineers, economists, biologists, planners, and
policymakers. Using diverse methods, we are engaging in critical questions and
tackling complex problems.
Through the Department of the History of Art & Architecture, the School of
Art + Design, the School of Architecture & Environment, and the School of
Planning, Public Policy and Management, we provide professional education for
nearly 30 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in both Eugene and at
the University of Oregon Portland.
Recorded Webcast Ceremonies
2021 College of Design Commencement Ceremonies can be found at

WelcomeCongratulations, Class of 2021 graduates and families!
What a magnificent achievement graduation represents and celebrates. The Class
of 2021 is without doubt resilient and determined. Qualities, that when combined
with a degree from the College of Design at the University of Oregon, will take you
far in life. I applaud each and every one of you for the extraordinary resolve and
commitment you have shown to completing your studies.
I also want to thank your family, friends, and loved ones who have been by your
side and supported you in your studies.
A degree from the rich diversity of programs on offer in the College of Design not
only prepares you for professional life, it equips you with critical thinking skills
and encourages you to put your talents to work to make the world a better place.
In this way your degree has deepened your ethical compass and imaginative
sensibilities, because in the absence of imagination, neither compassion nor
understanding can flourish.
You arrived at the University of Oregon in pursuit of a degree. You have achieved
that and so much more. These past few years with us you have explored,
experimented, and enriched your intellect and curiosity. You have made
friendships that will last a lifetime. You have discovered parts of yourself that you
probably never knew existed. You have changed. But also remember—you have
changed us. Since you came into our lives, we have become better teachers,
researchers, thinkers, practitioners, and leaders because of you. Thank you for this
magnificent gift you have bestowed on us.
I am excited for you as you embark on this next chapter in your lives. I look
forward to following your continuing successes and learning more about the
contributions you will make. Remember, you can always call the College of Design
at the University of Oregon home. So please, stay in touch.
Enjoy this special day and make the most of what is yet to come. We are so proud
of you!

HONORING NATIVE PEOPLES AND LANDS The University of Oregon is located on Kalapuya ilihi, the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. Following treaties between 1851 and 1855, Kalapuya people were dispossessed of their indigenous homeland by the United States government and forcibly removed to the Coast Reservation in Western Oregon. Today, Kalapuya descendants are primarily citizens of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, and they continue to make important contributions to their communities, to the UO, to Oregon, and to the world. In following the Indigenous protocol of acknowledging the original people of the land we occupy, we also extend our respect to the nine federally recognized Indigenous nations of Oregon: the Burns Paiute Tribe, the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, the Coquille Indian Tribe, the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, and the Klamath Tribes. We express our respect to the many more tribes who have ancestral connections to this territory, as well as to all other displaced Indigenous peoples who call Oregon home.
