Postgraduate coursework Postgraduate coursework will deepen your knowledge, expand your skills and equip you for a successful career in your field.

Our postgraduate coursework programs include Master degrees, along with a range of graduate-level Certificates and Diplomas. Some coursework programs also contain a research component, where students work with the assistance of a supervisor.

Admission into a postgraduate coursework program requires the completion of a Bachelor degree as a minimum.

Graduate Certificate: six months’ full-time study, or approximately 24 units

Graduate Diploma: one year full-time study, or approximately 36–48 units

Master degree: two years’ full-time study, or approximately 96 units

Master degree (Advanced): two years’ full-time study, or approximately 96 units. Includes a 24-unit equivalent supervised sub-thesis.


Postgraduate research Postgraduate research, or a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program, is a research-focused degree usually undertaken by someone who has completed a previous degree with a significant research component.

You can undertake a HDR program at ANU through a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Master of Philosophy (MPhil).

Because Canberra is a university town, the highest turnover of rental properties is during the December/January summer break.

Applying for a leaseIn Canberra, real estate agents and property owners often insist that prospective tenants see the property before applying for a lease, to be seriously considered.

To apply, you will need to fill out an application form which will ask you about your personal circumstances, including your financial situation. You will also be asked for referees, people who can verify that you are trustworthy, like a previous landlord or employer.

The agent should let you know within a week if your application has been successful.

Setting up your homeYour lease will usually be for a period of six to 12 months. You will be responsible for organising the utilities connections. Water will be connected by the owner but you will need to pay for the water you use.

Factor in these costs when setting up your new home:

> Bond is usually four weeks’ rent and is held by the ACT Office of Regulatory Services. Provided you don’t cause damage to the property and maintain it, the bond will be returned to you in full at the end of the lease

> As well as bond, you will probably need to pay four weeks’ rent in advance

> Connection fees for the telephone, electricity, gas and any other utilities you choose to connect at the property

> It’s a good idea to take out household contents insurance > Moving expenses > Canberra has a broad range of recycled, second-hand and

brand new furniture and household suppliers.

ANU Careers CentreANU Careers Centre is dedicated to providing a range of services to assist you to reach your full potential. ANU Careers is available to assist with a wide range of queries - from the general exploration of career ideas and the career implications of subject choices, to details of specific jobs, employers, or postgraduate courses. Our resources are available to current students and recent graduates.

We also provide employers with advice on recruitment strategies, how to maintain a profile on campus and assistance with targeting suitably qualified and motivated students and graduates.

Academic Skills and Learning CentreThis service can help you to develop the academic and communication skills on which all academic work is based. You can make one-on-one appointments, attend workshops or just drop-in, while taking advantage of the many self-help resources the centre provides.

The Postgraduate and Research Students’ AssociationThe Postgraduate and Research Students’ Association (PARSA) is the student representative body for postgraduates at the ANU. They provide a range of services aimed at providing support for the specific needs of postgraduate students in relation to both their studies and daily life. The primary focus of PARSA is the interests and welfare of all research and coursework postgraduate students at ANU.

All postgraduate students at ANU automatically become memebers of PARSA.

PARSA is run by students, for students and represents postgraduates both collectively and individually.

You can apply for a postgraduate coursework program if you hold a Bachelor degree or equivalent, or are about to graduate.

Most ANU programs also require that you achieve a particular Grade Point Average in addition to completion. Some may have further requirements such as professional work experience or cognate backgrounds.

International StudentsAs an international postgraduate student, there are two ways to apply to ANU, depending on your circumstances. Carefully read through the options to select the correct application process for your situation.

Option 1: Apply for most degrees at ANU. What you need to know

For most degrees at ANU, you can now apply and be assessed under our new admissions processes.

> There are two student intakes each year - Semester 1 and Semester 2

> Semester 1 2021 application are now open and will close 16 November 2020. See the website for Round 1, 2 and 3 dates.

> You can only preference a single program, so check Programs and Courses to choose the best program for you.

> There are three assessment rounds in each semester. Apply in the first round, and you have three opportunities to be assessed and accepted, giving you the best chance of being offered a place at ANU.

> In order to be considered for an offer, you must meet pre-requisite and cognate requirements for your preferred program, and English language requirements by the application deadline for the round.

> You will be ranked against other candidates applying for the same program.

Option 2: Apply for degrees with specific application requirements

Some programs at ANU have specific application processes. If you want to apply to a program listed below there may be additional requirements.

What you need to know• Applications for Semester 1 2021 are open now. • Minimum requirements for entry to these programs may include providing a portfolio, doing an audition or providing additional documents to support your application. Check Programs and Courses to see if additional requirements apply.

FeesMost domestic postgraduate coursework and non-award students at ANU must pay domestic tuition fees. The amount you have to pay is based on the courses in which you enrol.

Each course has a set fee, so you will be invoiced for the total fees for all the courses you enrol in for a semester or session.

You can defer part or all of your tuition fees using FEE-HELP if you meet these citizenship and residency requirements:*

>> You are an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder (living in Australia for the duration of your enrolment).

>> You are a permanent visa holder undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals, and will be living in Australia for the duration of your enrolment.

If you use FEE-HELP, the Australian Government will pay your tuition fees while you study, but you will be required to pay back those fees through the taxation system or voluntary payments. studyassist.gov.au/help-loans

A small number of postgraduate programs offer Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)* where the Australian Government subsidises your tuition fees. For information about CSPs see anu.edu.au/students/scholarships-fees/fees-payments/ postgraduate-commonwealth-supported-places
