2021 Piano Audition Material

1. Comp the chords for Yardbird Suite. THIS MUST be clearly and audibly recorded WITH A METRONOME. The metronome should be clearly heard in the recording. DO NOT perform this part of the recording along with any sort of musical accompaniment. Comp the entire piece - 32 measures - much of which is repeated. Tempo should at least be around 150. The student is welcome to play it as (reasonably) fast as possible but should know that the judge will reward clean and accurate playing over speed. Be sure to play it with a swing feel. Chords should be comped as if the pianist was the only person comping in a small jazz ensemble. In this setting and for the purpose of this audition - mature, musical, and

2. This part of the audition is optional but highly recommended: Improvise a solo to Yardbird Suite. This part of the audition should definitely be accompanied. See recording on band website at: www.mitchellband.org/jazz
