INTRODUCTION
To enhance understanding of the standards of the HKDSE Examination, authentic samples of candidates’ scripts in the 2021 examination are selected to form this set of exemplars which serve to illustrate the typical performance standards at different levels.
There are three compulsory papers in this subject. This set of exemplars is selected from candidates’ scripts of the listening papers, their video recordings of the ensemble performances and their audio recordings of the creating portfolios to illustrate the typical performance standards at different levels.
It is advisable to read this set of exemplars together with the question papers and the marking schemes in order to understand the requirements of the questions and the marking criteria. The question papers and the marking schemes are published in the 2021 HKDSE Question Papers (with marking schemes and comments on candidates’ performance).
Comments
The candidate exhibits an outstanding ability to identify and notate musical elements
such as harmony, meter, texture, genre, form and style, and in instrument/voice
recognition. S/he obtains full marks in melodic and rhythmic dictation in Question 3.
S/he also displayed remarkable listening skills and effective writing when describing
musical features and orchestration, especially in Question 5. S/he vividly describes
the interaction between the orchestra and the featured instrument of the three periods
using sophisticated music terminologies and coherent arguments.
Comments
The candidate performs extremely well when identifying musical elements such as
instrument/voice, harmony, meter, texture, genre, form and style. His/her melodic
dictation in Question 3 is good and the musical features of various periods in excerpts
9 and 10 were described well, using logical and sound arguments.
Comments
This candidate exhibits an outstanding ability to identify instrumentation, scale,
playing techniques and texture and in notating harmonic progression. S/he knows the
compositional devices and artistic qualities of music of different genres in connection
with the given cultural contexts, e.g. the performance practices of Chinese ensemble
music and the features of Cantonese operatic music. The candidate uses sophisticated
music terminology and coherent arguments. For example, s/he vividly describes the
difference in the performance of the bolded lyrics in Question 5 and precisely
compares the melody of the last word of the designated lines in Question 6.
Comments
The candidate exhibits excellent listening skills when identifying and notating musical
elements. For instance, s/he scored full marks in Question 1, melodic dictation,
chenzi, xu and ding-ban notation. S/he demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the
compositional devices and artistic qualities of music of different genres and styles,
such as types of banghuang, qupai and shuobai in Cantonese operatic music. The
candidate uses music terminology effectively, e.g. when comparing the melody of the
last word of the designated lines and discussing how the singing of these words is
extended.
Comments
The candidate exhibits good listening skills when identifying musical elements such
as instrument/voice, tonality, genre, form and style. S/he shows fair pitch recognition
in the melodic dictation in Question 3 and a sound knowledge of compositional
devices, for example, using appropriate music terminology to explain the intervallic
relationship between the two melodies in Question 4.
Comments
The candidate shows good listening skills when identifying musical elements such as
instrument/voice, tonality, texture, genre, form and style. S/he is good at melodic
dictation but weak in rhythmic identification. S/he demonstrates a sound knowledge
of music genres and styles in their historical and cultural contexts, and the
justifications in Question 2f and 4e are logical. The candidate uses appropriate music
terminology when describing the interaction between the orchestra and the featured
instrument in excerpt 10.
Comments
The candidate exhibits good listening skills when identifying musical elements such
as the timbres of Chinese instruments, music fragments and scale and when notating
harmonic progression. S/he is also good at discussing Western pop song. However,
s/he is rather weak on Cantonese operatic music and failed to identify the types of
banghuang, qupai and shuobai. Although the candidate uses appropriate music
terminology, s/he is less able to do this in comparison question.
Comments
The candidate displays quite good listening skills when identifying some musical
elements but his/her melodic dictation is weak. S/he is also weak in identifying
tonality, meter and texture, but is able to identify the stylistic periods for excerpts 8
and 9. The candidate uses limited terminology; for example, functional/tonal harmony
should have been used to describe the harmonic feature in Question 3.
Comments
The candidate displays quite good listening skills when identifying musical elements
such as playing techniques and texture, but melodic dictation and harmonic
progression are weak. The candidate has adequate knowledge of the compositional
devices and artistic qualities of different genres of music, e.g. types of banghuang,
qupai and shoubai, but was less able to recognise melodic fragments and
ornamentations (jiahua). Although s/he uses appropriate music terminology, there are
spelling errors.
Comments
The candidate demonstrates basic listening skills when identifying some musical
elements, such as instruments, cadence and rhythmic patterns, but scored poorly on the
others. S/he used simple explanations to convey his/her understanding of music but
did not spell the music terminologies correctly and has mistaken dynamics for the
melodic contour.
Comments
The candidate’s listening skills were at a basic level when recognising music
elements, e.g. ding-ban notation and a few Chinese instruments. However, s/he was
weak in harmonic progression, ornamentation, music fragments and melodic
dictation. S/he knows the basics about compositional devices and the artistic qualities
of music of different genres and styles but did well only in the ding-ban notation of
Cantonese opera, scoring poorly on other questions. S/he sometimes uses relevant
music terminology but some answers are either irrelevant or unclear, e.g. “The man
sings a long note and just change the pitch once”.
Comments
The candidate exhibits simple listening skills and an elementary ability to identify
musical elements, and scored poorly in all questions except Question 1. S/he failed to
understand Question 5 and describes the dynamics and melodic changes rather than
the interaction between the orchestra and the featured instrument.
Comments
This candidate exhibited only simple listening skills and a basic ability to identify and
notate musical elements, and got no marks for Questions 3, 5 and 6. His/her knowledge
of compositional devices, artistic qualities and music styles was elementary, and simple
terminology is used. Some answers are either incomplete or blank.
