May Outline

May 1st We’ll kick off the Hunger Walk & 5K with a live-stream at 9AM! We’ll send out the live stream link via email or follow us on Facebook to keep up with live steam details. From 10:00 - 11:30 AM we invite you to come to our Distribution Center (3318 92nd St S, Lakewood 98499) to drop off any food, checks, or cash donations you’ve collected for the event. The Possible Solutions will be playing a show at our Distribution Center during this time and we’ll have a free swag giveaway for everyone who drives through!

May 3rd - 30thWe’ve got a schedule of theme walks and runs for you to enjoy all month. Be sure to wear your event shirt or bib while taking part in these themed events and send your photos to [email protected].

May 3rd - 9thCostume Walk/Run Week! Put on a cape, favorite Halloween costume (or a Halloween costume your kids weren’t able to use last year), and go for a fun walk or run! (Hint: May 4th falls during this week, so grab a lightsaber or Darth Vader mask and may the force be with you on your walk or run).

Enter to Win DetailsWe want to see your photos from the Hunger Walk & 5K! Share your images on Facebook or Instagram using #EFNHungerWalk5K (make sure your profile is public!) or email them to us at [email protected]

To give you a little motivation to take photos of your walk or run each week, each photo you share will enter you to win a prize basket! Just take a photo in your event shirt from 2021, wearing your race bib, participating in a theme run, or holding one of the printable signs from the “Tools & Forms” page of the race website to be entered to win. Enter as many times as you’d like and then keep an eye out because you could see your photo featured in an event email or social media post.

May 10th - 16thPlogging (picking up trash while jogging). Plogging has become a worldwide activity where folks clean up their neighborhood or a local park while they go for a walk or run. Grab some garbage bags and gloves and pick up trash while completing your walk or run. Not only will you be providing Pierce County with a nutritious food supply, you’ll also be beautifying the community!

May 17th - 23rdPet Week! Take your favorite furry, feathered, or scaly pal on your walk or run. Dogs are always welcome when we host the Hunger Walk & 5K at Fort Steilacoom Park, but this gives you an opportunity to get creative and have any of your pets participate in the Hunger Walk & 5K (house plants count too!).

May 24th - 30thHometown scavenger hunt! Walk or run around your town and snap some selfies in front of buildings or features that make your town unique. Doing your walk or run in Tacoma? You may want to snap a photo in front of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, in Wright Park, Point Defiance, or by one of the many potholes that grace our streets. Get creative with your list and find the spots that make your town home.

This year’s Hunger Walk & 5K is a month long event! We’ve got different activities and events scheduled throughout May to get you moving all month.

THANK YOU

The mission of Emergency Food Network (EFN) is to provide Pierce County with a consistent, diverse, and nutritious food supply so that no person goes hungry. EFN is Pierce County’s emergency food distributor, providing our network of 70+ food pantries, meal sites, and shelters with more than one million pounds of food each month, at no cost to them.

In 2020, our network saw a 40% increase in guest visits. Some families saw their already precarious financial situation become worse while others experienced food insecurity for the first time ever in 2020. Food insecurity levels are still elevated in 2021, even as we begin to see economic recovery. Your support for the Hunger Walk & 5K will help EFN in our goal to distribute 16 million pounds of food in 2021.

Route IdeasThe best part of our virtual Hunger Walk & 5K is that you can walk or run anywhere! Walk around your neighborhood, run for 3.1 miles on a treadmill, or visit Fort Steilacoom Park and take a stroll around Waughop Lake.

We’ve posted four routes in the RunGo app for runners looking for a specific route. Join the group “Hunger Walk & 5K” in RunGo to find those routes. Please note: While our staff have tested out each of these routes we can’t verify the condition or crowds you will experience on your run so please use your best judgment when following these routes! Visit www.bit.ly/HW5Krun to go to the routes or click the button below if you’re viewing the Race Packet on a computer.

Don’t have a way to track your distance or not sure how to use RunGo? At 3.1 miles, a 5K is approximately 3,400 – 6,200 steps depending on your pace and stride. Instead of setting a distance goal just set a step goal for a walk or run and then use the step tracking app on a smartphone or watch to track progress towards your goal. Or, run just over 12 laps of a standard track.

Fort Steilacoom RouteThis path is approximately a 5K but will run short if you walk or run on the interior part of the path. If you want to be sure you are walking or running 3.1 miles exactly be sure to bring a GPS watch or use your smart phone to reach 5 kilometer

Will I still get a t-shirt?Yes! Shirts will be mailed out directly by our vendor this year. Anyone who registers between April 9th and May 31st will receive a shirt after the event concludes. Please be sure to use a proper mailing address when you register in order to avoid any shipping errors.

Do I have to walk or run a 5K? Nope! While our in-person event is designed to be a 5K, you can walk or run whatever distance you’d like for the Hunger Walk & 5K. We know not everyone can map out a 5K route individually so we have some route ideas on page 5 of this race packet and on the race website.

What impact does Emergency Food Network have in Pierce County?Unfortunately, food insecurity is a problem in every community in America, including Pierce County. Before the COVID-19 Pandemic, 1 in 9 people in Pierce County were food insecure. Feeding America projects that the food insecurity rate in Washington is now closer to 1 in 6. Families experiencing food insecurity may have to decide between paying rent and buying food, or an adult may skip a meal so that children can eat. Providing our partner food pantries with enough food ensures that every time a family visits one of our partner food pantries they are able to leave with food for nine meals.

Where should I do my walk/run? Anywhere you feel safe! We’ve got a few route examples in this race guide, but you can participate in the event anywhere. Walk or run a 5K on a treadmill, go for a walk around your neighborhood, or take advantage of some of the amazing parks and trails in Pierce County. Please be sure to follow guidelines from the CDC and Governor’s office when walking or running with others to keep our community safe.

How can I raise funds for the event? You can continue to use your fundraising page on RunSignup through the end of May. If you’d prefer to send cash or checks, you can mail them to our office at 3318 92nd St. South, Lakewood WA 98499. Please be sure to include a note that the donation is for the Hunger Walk & 5K and the fundraiser who should receive credit for the donations.

We will also be hosting a drive-through food and fund drive on May 1st at our office. You can bring any donations you’ve collected for the event from 10:00 - 11:30.

Can I get a Race Bib?Yes! You can download a race bib from RunSignup. You can print your race bib to wear on your hunger walk or run or bring it with you to one of our Business Partners if you don’t have an event shirt.

To get your bib, go to Runsignup.com/Profile then scroll to the 2021 Hunger Walk & 5K event. Then, click “View Digital Bib” on the right side of the page and print from the next page!
