Welcome......to our 55th season, and a year of exciting art and craft classes, eight kids camps, outstanding exhibitions and last but not least, the NEW 1000 Islands Art & Craft & Antique Festival. At the time of this writing (late February), we are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to hold all of our programs and host our full schedule of exhibitions and events, following federal and state protocols of course. After a drastically reduced calendar last year, we are eager to see you all again, welcome several new instructors and returning ones, and offer over 75 classes. TIAC will install three major exhibitions this season: Bird on a Wire: The Art of Greg Lago; Summer Days, Summer Nights, (ceramics by Margie Hughto); and the longtime seasonal favorite Along the River’s Edge, a juried exhibition featuring artwork from the best regional and national artists representing the finest work in a range of mediums. In addition to the many ATRE featured artists, the exhibition will present Jefferson County Birds — Drawings by Sue deLearie Adair. And, for the first time, we will present an exhibit of the After School Arts program. The pottery program, suspended at the onset of the pandemic, will continue under the direction of Kathleen Morris, TIAC’s new staff potter. Kathy will offer an array of classes including continuous wheel sessions, private lessons, and open studio time. The pottery studio is also the perfect place to hold a birthday party, host a team building retreat or private event. The 26th Annual Weaving History Conference (cancelled last year) will be held virtually in October and include an impressive lineup of academic presentations including keynote presenter John Vollmer, an independent scholar and researcher recognized worldwide for his publications concerning Asian textiles and their roles within society. Back for its eighth season, the Linda B. Yenawine Memorial Dine-Around will feature a dozen parties that were unable to run last summer and a few new ones, too. Finders Keepers, our resale shop offering eclectic and gently used vintage goods and antiques, will return after a very successful first season last year despite the virus. New this summer will be the 1000 Islands Art & Craft & Antique Festival which will replace the longstanding craft and antique shows. After 55 years for the Antique Show and 37 for the Craft Show, and a changing marketplace, our board, staff and development committee agreed it was time to change it up! And, so far, it’s been well received by many returning dealers. Please be sure to check out the complete calendar on page 38. On behalf of the TIAC Board of Trustees and staff, I thank you, especially our steadfast members, for your ongoing support. The allegiance shown TIAC over the past difficult pandemic year was heartening and illustrated just how important a vibrant arts scene is in our beloved River communities. See you soon!

THE PRINCIPLES OF DRAWINGMitchell Hill PriceMitchell Price was trained at the Flor-ence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, where he lived and taught for over six years. In this extensive class, he will take you through the methodology of how drawing actually works. If you’ve ever had interest in realistically draw-ing or painting objects from life, this class will give you the tools you need to start. Topics covered include: basics of the portrait, how to draw propor-tionately, light and tone, perspective, and composition of both landscape and still life. BOUNDWEAVEHarriet BurrisIntermediate level—should be com-fortable winding a warp and dressing a loom. Boundweave includes a vari-ety of weaving structures which are all weft faced; the horizontal weft being packed tightly so that the vertical warp is invisible. This creates opportunities for designing color patterns and fig-ures on the loom. End products range from sturdy Krokbragd rugs to the gossamer taquete creations of Lillian Whipple. This class will be a round rob-in, with each loom warped in a differ-ent structure. Every student will weave on every loom and will go home with a reference set of samples. Please bring a prepared warp (to be assigned by instructor prior to class), weft, graph paper, a few colored pen-cils, and bag lunch.

In this fiber process that uses soap, water, wool, and agitation you’ll create a beautiful felted landscape that’s suit-able for framing. SILK PAPER FUSION Sandi CirilloSilk paper is NOT the kind of paper that most people are accustomed to. It is very textural and easy to make in a process called silk fusion. The colors and thickness you choose will depend on what you plan to do with your pa-per. If painting or doing calligraphy, you might create a whole sheet using various shades of white silk fibers for example. Or if you’re going for a vase, you might choose lots of colors and a larger degree of thickness. Examples will be shown on the many uses for silk “paper,” including 3-D art, mixed media projects, mold-ed plates and bowls, notecards, and books. Please wear old clothes and bring scissors and a few old towels.

At Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, we’re here to care for communities across Upstate New York. And a big part of that is helping people take care of themselves. If you’ve been holding off on scheduling appointments or addressing ongoing health concerns, now’s a good time to reconnect with your doctor. So focus on your healthand move forward with confidence, knowing that we’re with you every step of the way.
