Third Sunday of Lent
TOTAL ALLEGIANCE In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of covenant—as a preparation for the baptismal covenant celebrated at Easter—occupies an important place in our cycle of Lenten readings. The notion of covenant as a relationship between two parties carries with it an expectation of mutual accountability and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When God forged the covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge of God’s protection, and it would forever permit them familiar access as the Chosen People. For their part, the Jewish people were to observe the dictates of the law, summarized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten Commandments. To be in a covenantal relationship with the Lord God requires an exclusive relationship, just as discipleship with Jesus—ritualized in baptism—demands a total allegiance to him and none other.

A Message from our Pastor There is a running joke about voting in Chicago. They say that one should “vote early and often.” When we think about the Old Testament, we may think of God as giver of laws and punishments. However, today’s first reading gives us one of many references that one finds even in the
Old Testament of God’s mercy. Although His punishment on those who hate Him lasts a few generations, his mercy on those who love Him and keep his commandments extends for thousands of generations. My brothers and sisters, if the Lord has sought to extend his mercy on those who seek it for thousands of generations then shouldn’t we take advantage of that love? It is always available to you in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. All you have to do is say you are sorry for your sins, and then listen as God washes away those sins. It is a gift to be embraced “early and often,” especially in this Lenten season of seeking God’s mercy as we prepare for Easter.
I will be in the confessional “early and often” over the next few weeks to provide ample opportunity for you to receive the sacrament of forgiveness before Easter. Wednesday, March 10th: 6:00pm until all are heard. With Fr. Nestor for Spanish. Thursday, March 11th, 18th, 25th: 7:45am (after rosary until all are heard) Friday, March 12th, 19th, 26th: 6:30pm (after stations) Mon., March 22nd & Wednesday, March 31th: 6:30pm until all are heard. See the Announcements page at icmorris.org or the IC Facebook page for updates.
Lenten Luncheons this Year are offered virtually Stay safe and share a virtual ecumenical experience with several local churches this Lenten season. The focus of the Lenten Luncheon is centered on Psalm 23. Each week a link will be posted in our News and Notes and on our website. Follow that link to view/participate in the Lenten video for the week.
The schedule for the Lenten luncheon is: 2/24/21—Psalm 23, verses 1 & 2 The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters 3/3/21—Psalm 23, verses 1 & 3 The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name's sake. 3/10/21—Psalm 23, verses 1 & 4 The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with
me; your rod and your staff they comfort me. 3/17/21—Psalm 23, verses 1 & 5 The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 3/24/21—Psalm 23, verses 1 & 6 The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

School News Welcome to March! ICS is enjoying the bright sunshine, warmer temperatures, and sounds of the birds singing their thanks to God! We are working carefully as we travel through our Lenten journeys. Second through Eighth grades attended Reconciliation Feb 26 and March 1. Teachers are working on Lenten promises and activities in the classrooms. The Lenten banks have been sent home - hopefully spare change is filling the ones in your house quickly. Remember to bring those back filled the week before Easter Vacation so we can share our good fortune with others. Sacrifices for Lent are so important - this video from Franciscan Media gives a little insight. Enjoy!

candidates will attend our Confirmation Retreat. To keep with the Covid-19 guidelines, we will have Group A meet from 9:00 a.m.—Noon and Group B will meet from 1:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m. Please check with your instructor if you are not sure which group you are in.
March 7 - Third Sunday of Lent Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the church office doorbell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.
Thank you for supporting the work of the Immaculate Conception Community Outreach.
May God Bless You!

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
A time to raise awareness about the inclusion of persons with developmental disabilities* in the Church and all areas of community life. Pope Francis’ 2019 message at the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, stated: “We are called to recognize in every person with disabilities, even complex and serious disabilities, a unique contribution to the common good through their original life stories. …and to recognize them as persons of equal dignity, as brothers and sisters in humanity.” *Developmental disabilities are impairments in physical, learning, language or behavior areas, including autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and learning or intellectual disabilities.

March is Premiere Month at the EWTN Global Catholic Network. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the great new television programs the Network will be airing. EWTN News In-Depth: This new weekly, one-hour news discussion program offers a Catholic perspective and analysis on the top stories of the week. Hosted by Montse Alvarado, the program welcomes newsmakers, experts, and correspondents from EWTN's global news bureaus in a discussion of current events in the Church, politics, and culture, all through the lens of the Catholic faith. Alvarado, the show’s host, is already well-known to EWTN audiences as an inspiring and brilliant woman who also serves as Vice President and Executive Director of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. 7 pm Fridays beginning March 5; 1am Saturdays; and 10am Sundays. They Might Be Saints: “Miracle Hunter” Michael O’Neill returns with a regular slot for his popular series, which examines the lives of men and women of faith on the path to sainthood and the search for canonization miracles. From miracle workers to martyrs and ordinary people living extraordinary lives of heroic virtue, this EWTN original series presents those exemplary people who make us wonder if someday they might be saints. 10:30 am Mondays beginning March 1; 5 pm Fridays, and 1:30 am Sundays. Journey Through Scripture – The Bible and the Church Fathers: As Christians, we should want to know our family tree and who has gone before us in the Faith. In these 12 beautifully produced lessons, Fr. Cedric Pisegna, C.P. teaches us who the Early Church Fathers were and how they shaped the way we read Scripture. 10 am Thursdays beginning March 4, and 10:30 pm Saturdays.
Mass Volunteers The volunteers we have had helping with greeting, ushering and cleaning have done a fantastic job to keep our services and church building safe for all of us. We are now asking if those who have seen our volunteers in action are ready to step forward and help us. We are in need of new volunteers to step forward and assist our current volunteers at mass. You are only asked to volunteer at the masses and the weekends you are available. The more we have, the less work it will be for everyone. If you have any questions about volunteering please contact the parish office at 815-942-0620 or [email protected]. During this time of Lent and giving up, please pray about giving extra time to your church to help us continue to offer in-person masses to our parishioners.
Postures of the Mass In the Mass, we pray not only with our lips, but with our bodies as well. We stand when the ministers enter. In Western culture, standing is a sign of attention, a mark of respect: all stand when the judge enters the courtroom, for example. Standing is also an ancient posture of prayer, mentioned frequently in the Old Testament. When the readings begin, we sit down: a listening posture. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to his teaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to hear his words. Kneeling is another posture that is full of meaning. It expresses adoration and worship, but it can also express humility and contrition. We bow: a sign of honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of God, especially when we receive the Eucharist. And there are other ritual gestures as well—striking the breast, genuflecting, and of course making the sign of the cross. The liturgy invites us to pray with our whole person—with heart and mind, voice and body. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
