MAINSTAGE FAMILY CABARET SPECIAL EVENT

2021|22 Schauer Performing arts season

The Beat Goes On! The staff and Board of the Schauer Arts Center are thrilled to be throwing open the doors and welcoming our patrons into the theater, classrooms, event spaces and our new courtyard.

To say the last year has been unique and challenging would be an understatement but we never doubted we would reach this point. The community support to get us here, and gratitude as patrons return, has been humbling. As we begin to open up, it is obvious that everyone missed the joy, inspiration and socialization that the arts bring to us. Staff, patrons and performers have all expressed the excitement of returning to live performances and we are happy to be the ones to bring that back to the community.

The Schauer Center opened in 2000. Having missed our 20th anniversary year, we are celebrating instead this year with favorite performances from the past 20 years plus new offerings to expand our patrons’ experiences. We invite everyone to enjoy the mid-season open house which will show off the Schauer School of the Arts and highlight our talented resident companies. There is much to celebrate this year. 21 years from our start and having survived a world-wide pandemic and year-long shutdown, we are proud to say, The Beat Goes On!

Sincerely,

Mary Brodzeller Executive Director

While the music made by Perry and the Long Beds has been variously described as ‘country folk’, ‘roughneck folk’, ‘folk-twang’, and Americana, they prefer the description given by an audience member after a benefit concert in Perry’s old high school gym: “You sound just like Gordon Lightfoot…only zippier!” Nice—but there are limits. “Zippy or not,” says Perry, “when ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’ comes on the radio, we sit down, shut up, and listen.”

Give ‘Em Hell, Harry!—written by Samuel Gallu, is a faithful and often humorous portrayal of President Harry S. Truman’s life and presidency. It spans his childhood, his “political apprenticeship” as a judge in Jackson County, MO, his years in the U.S. Senate and his momentous two terms as President. Actor James Whitmore originated the role in 1975. Clifton Truman Daniel took up the mantle in October 2017, marking the first time in history a U.S. President would be portrayed onstage by a direct descendant…in this case, his oldest grandson.

Winners of two Grammy Awards, Riders in the Sky stand “hats and shoulders” above the rest of the purveyors of “Comedy & Western!” For more than 30 years, they have kept the flame passed on by Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, becoming modern-day icons with their wacky humor, western wit, and cowboy way of life.

Born of Gin Halls and Juke Joints, The WhiskeyBelles are an all-female traditional country and Americana trio widely known for captivating shows featuring classic vintage-country, Americana, folk-revival and roots-country tunes, with their own witty originals sprinkled in. They’ve been compared to the Pistol Annies, Dixie Chicks and the Trio (Dolly Parton, Emmy Lou Harris & Linda Ronstadt).
