Stage 5 - Years 9 & 10 Curriculum

In Year 9 students commence Stage 5 of their education. Students satisfactorily completing Stage 5 studies will be eligible to receive a Record of Student Achievement (ROSA) from the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). The ROSA is a document that replaces the previously issued School Certificate. Students who do not complete Stage 5 studies satisfactorily may be eligible for a Transcript of Studies (TOS).

To receive a Record of Achievement (ROSA), it is mandatory that students complete: • English• Mathematics• Science• History• Geography• PD/H/PE• and Mandatory Elective hours

Students are awarded a grade for each course that they have studied in Years 9 and 10. These grades indicate the students' achievement in each course. Grades are calculated based on internal school assessment. Students must make themselves aware of the assessment expectations in each course.

Students will choose THREE ELECTIVES they would like to study in Years 9 and 10 which also count towards their ROSA.

One of these will be studied across both Years 9 and 10. This will be a 200 hour course. The other 2 subjects will be studied for one year only. One in Year 9 and one in Year 10. These will be 100 hour courses. Students will be able to experience a wide range of subjects with this process.

Students need to consider which electives best fit their interests, abilities and possible career paths before making a selection. Students are encouraged to discuss subject selections with their parents, teachers and Mrs Pratt, the Careers Adviser, before making a final decision on choices.

In order to enable students to get their choices, we ask that you indicate your preference for the 200 hour course you wish to study in year 9 and 10 and 100 hour course you wish to study in year 9 preference.

Every attempt will be made to accommodate student choices, but some adjustments may be necessary.

It is important to understand that once students have been allocated to an elective, they cannot change courses at a later date, unless there are vacancies in the new course, required hours

can be sat isf ied and course fees are paid.

Personal Protective Equipment Agreement

Students enrolled in the following subjects at Morisset High School are required to wear protective clothing and eyewear that meets Australian Safety Standards in all practical classes:

Industrial Technology (Metal), Food Technology, Industrial Technology (Timber)

The High School recognises that this places additional cost for parents. However, student safety is enhanced when students wear the correct gear when in a practical workshop, that is:

• Enclosed leather shoes • Cloth style protective apron • Safety goggles when using equipment • Hair tied back

It is important that students wear the above items when in a practical environment. Failure to do so could jeopardise the safety of all students in the room. It is compulsory for students to wear the above safety equipment in every practical lesson. Failure to comply will result in alternate lesson organisation and ongoing refusal to wear the above safety gear will lead to disciplinary measures being implemented.

Please detach and return this section to Mrs Dekker (HT TAS)

I have read this Personal Protective Equipment Agreement and I am aware of the school's initiatives to maintain a safe learning environment, including my child's responsibilities. Mathematics (Mandatory) Mathematical ideas have evolved across all cultures over thousands of years and are constantly developing. Digital technologies facilitate this expansion of ideas, providing access to new tools for continuing mathematical exploration and invention. Mathematics is integral to scientific and technological advances in many fields of endeavor. In addition to its practical applications, the study of mathematics is a valuable pursuit in its own right, providing opportunities for originality, challenge and leisure.

Mathematics in K-10 provides students with knowledge, skills and understanding in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. It focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, communication, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems relevant to their further education and everyday lives.

Students exhibit a wide range of mathematical skills, levels of competence, and aspirations. Some students may be aiming to develop the mathematical skills necessary to function in daily life and various work contexts. Other students may seek to address more challenging mathematics to prepare them for the highest-level courses in Year 11 and Year 12.

For this reason, Stage 5 of the K-10 Mathematics curriculum has been expressed in terms of the three sub-stages, Stage 5.1, Stage 5.2 and Stage 5.3. These sub-stages are not designed as prescribed courses and many different 'endpoints' are possible. As well as studying the Stage 5.1 content, the majority of students will study some or all of the Stage 5.2 content. Similarly, as well as studying the Stage 5.2 content, many students will study some or all of the Stage 5.3 content. Areas for Assessment Students get an overall grade using the Stage 5 course performance descriptors (CPD). Teachers use the Stage 5 CPD's to determine Stage 5 grades. The descriptors have been developed from the NESA general performance descriptors, and provide a more complete description of typical performance in this course at each grade level. At Morisset HS, the grades are determined by the student's performance in the assessment tasks, class tests and the classroom teachers' professional judgment may also be used to assess a student's ongoing performance. Note: Schools are responsible for awarding each student a grade (A, B, C, D, or E) to summarise the students achievement in any 100 hour or 200 hour course completed in Stage 5. In Mathematics, grades have been further differentiated to nine levels (A10, A9, B8, B7 C6, C5, D4, D3 and E2). The grade awarded is reported on the student's Record of School Achievement (RoSA). Course Name: Music - 200 hours

Stage 5 BOS Elective Subject: Music

Subject Description:

All students should have the opportunity to develop their musical abilities and potential. As an art form, music pervades society and occupies a significant place in world cultures and in the oral and recorded history of all civilisations. Music plays important roles in the social, cultural, aesthetic and spiritual lives of people. At an individual level, music is a medium of personal expression. It enables the sharing of ideas, feelings and experiences.

The study of music combines the development of affective, cognitive and psychomotor domains in the act of making music. It allows for the expression of emotion and imagination, the intellect and the exploration of values. Music fosters an understanding of continuity and change, and of the connections between different times and cultures. The study of music fosters knowledge, understanding and skills that contribute to lifelong processes of learning and to the appreciation and enjoyment of music.

While students will develop knowledge and skills in each of the individual areas of performing, composing and listening, the integration of experiences in these areas enhances the understanding and manipulation of the concepts of music in differing musical contexts.
