Points, and subsequentlywins, have been hard tocome by for the Thief RiverFalls girls basketball teamduring the first half of the2019-20 season. “This has been a toughseason for us, with a fewclose games,” said GirlsBasketball Head CoachLaura Fay. “Against BGMRand Fosston, we lost by 1.They both were great games
that could have gone eitherway, and against DGF, welost by two in double over-time.” A lack of scoring has hurtthe Prowlers this season. They are 3-3 when theyscore 50 or more points, and0-11 when they don’t. The Prowlers droppedtheir first five contests toBemidji, Roseau, Ada-Borup,Barnesville and Perham to
open the season. On Dec. 12, the teampicked up its first win of theseason in the form of a 51-7thrashing at the hands ofthe Warroad Warriors. Twodays later, the Prowlers fellto a strong CrookstonPirates squad. Back-to-back one-pointlosses to Badger/Greenbush-Middle River and Fosstonsent Thief River Falls to theChristmas break with a 1-7record. Following the holidaybreak, the Prowlers droppedgames to Walker-H a c k e n s a c k - A k e l e y ,Rothsay, Detroit Lakes,Roseau and Pequot Lakes, before righting the ship in a62-60 double overtime lossthat was painfully close tobeing a win. “It was also a great game– we were out three playersdue to the flu and three girlsfouled out in the secondhalf,” Fay said. “CamrynSchwab played all but twominutes of that game andgave us 17 points and threesteals, while Brea Prickettcame in playing most of thegame as well with 14 points
and one steal.” The Prowlers are unde-feated since the double over-time loss, picking up domi-nant wins over DetroitLakes and Bagley. “This season, we havestruggled defensively and tovalue the ball. We also havestruggled to have all of ourgirls healthy and at practicesince the beginning of theseason,” Fay said. “We havehad a few girls step up andtake on different roles forour team and adjusting eachgame. Most importantly, wehave been improving everyday and I am looking for-ward to the second half ofthe season.” Seniors Annika Dalagerand Brea Prickett arereturning starters from lastyear’s team that wentthrough a similar season in2018-19. Also returning from lastyear’s team are seniorsCamryn Schwab, CarleyJohnson, Ava Yuska, JerzieFinstad, Jordan Naslundand Madalyn Determan;junior Hannah Mauch; soph-omore Olivia Hawkins; andfreshmen Brylee Lingen andKendal Rantanen. Varsity newcomers whowill challenge for playingtime include junior GwenStengrim; sophomoresBrooklyn Brouse, TristaSpears, Jazlyn Goss, SydneyReierson; and freshmanMaren Espe. At 12-3, defending sectionchampion Roseau is playinglike a section front runneronce again and appears to bethe top team in the northhalf of Section 8AA. At 10-3, Hawley is off to astrong start in the south halfof Section 8AA. Perham, 10-5, is also in the mix with awin over Roseau inDecember.

There isn’t an athleticteam at Lincoln High thathas shown as much improve-ment as the boys basketballteam. The Prowlers returnedthree starters and 10 play-
ers overall from a squad thatwent 10-17 a year ago. The team got off to animpressive 6-1 start thatbegan with a 75-49 state-ment win over Roseau. Thief River Falls’ only set-back in its first seven gameswas a 77-56 home loss toEast Grand Forks, and theteam got right back on trackwith wins over Park Rapids,69-53; Win-E-Mac, 72-51;Crookston, 68-67; Bagley,70-53; and the NorthernFreeze, 53-51. Head coach Jon Hamscredited a more matureteam as the primary reasonfor the team’s early success. The maturity comes froma core group that includessix seniors - Storm Manning,Gunnar Aune, Zach Praska,Gunner Zutz, AnthonyHyland and CorbinKruckeberg. The seniors are flanked
by four juniors on the varsi-ty roster - DominickAlcantar, Jonah Kalsnes,Konnor Kandoje and BrevynLingen, three sophomores -Dylan Hahn, Jack Onkkaand Brady Olson, and stand-out freshman Jack Manning. Thief River Falls’ sched-ule got a bit tougher afterthe Christmas break and theProwlers dropped hard-fought battles with Warroad,Fertile-Beltrami, Hawleyand a last second loss toDetroit Lakes, before gettingback to their winning wayswith an 84-81 win over amuch-improved Roseausquad. “Improvement over lastyear comes from the maturi-ty of the seniors this year,”Hams said. “We are makingbetter decisions overall. Wewill need to keep getting bet-ter to make sure, as we enterthe second half of the sea-
son, we keep improving.” Through 11 games, theProwlers’ have four playersaveraging more than 10points per game, led byStorm Manning at 19.5points per game, and fol-lowed by Brevyn Lingen,11.1 ppg., Gunnar Aune,10.5 ppg., and JackManning, 10.1 ppg. Aune is the team’s toprebounder with 78 on theyear, and both Storm andJack Manning are over 50 onthe year, with 57 and 52,respectively. Defending section cham-pion Perham is off to a 12-0start and remains thefavorite in Section 8AA,while East Grand Forks hasemerged as the team to beatin the north half and possi-bly the whole section with13-0 start to the season.

Girls hockey team looks for strong stretch run Four-time defendingchampion Warroad remainsthe team to beat in Section8A girls hockey, but ThiefRiver Falls and East GrandForks will attempt to have asay in the section’s final out-
come before all is said anddone. Thief River Falls enteredthe 2019-20 season as a defi-nite section front-runnerbehind returning championWarroad, battling EastGrand Forks for the numbertwo seed. Thief River Falls got off toan uncharacteristically slowstart with a 3-0 loss toBemdiji in the season open-er, before reeling off threestraight wins, defeatingDetroit Lakes,Delano/Rockford and Orono. The Prowlers were look-ing for their fourth win in arow when junior goaltenderGabby Steele suffered aknee injury againstAlexandria on Nov. 25. Theinjury was one of many facedby the Prowlers early in theseason and it was at a posi-
tion where teams count onstability. “As with many sports, injuries can be positive andnegative,” said Girls HockeyHead Coach Brett Johnson.“The negative side being youhave players who are notable to play and you have toadjust your line-up accord-ingly. Positive side being itgives younger girls theopportunity to get minutes.” With Steele out of thelineup, the Prowlers calledon freshman Bell Hamreand sophomore BellaBerzinski to fill in, in front ofthe net. The duo filled inadmirably with Hamre mak-ing all 10 starts duringSteele’s absense and leadingthe Prowlers to a 5-5 record. “Bell Hamre stepped upto the plate and did a greatjob in the net,” Johnson said.“I thought the team ralliedaround her and boosted herconfidence. We have also hadseveral of our forwards gethurt, allowing more girls toget more minutes at the JVand Varsity level.” The Prowlers are 2-2since Steele’s return to thestarting lineup and are 10-9overall with five games leftto play in the 2019-20 regu-lar season. They are almostassured of getting the num-ber three seed in sectionsafter dropping a pair of one-goal games to the EastGrand Forks Green Wave. The Green Wave claimed thefirst meeting between theteams, 3-2, on Dec. 12, andthey added a 4-3 win on Jan.
21. To return to state, theProwlers will need to find away to defeat East GrandForks and then eventuallyWarroad. “It's going to take a teameffort,” Johnson said. “It isgoing to be key for us to playtough in our D-zone andeliminate the many odd manrushes we have been givingup. Then we are going tohave to capitalize on ouroffensive opportunities.EGF has a steady goalie andwe will have to get traffic infront of her to eliminate hervision.” After splitting the 2018-19 regular season series,Thief River Falls defeatedEast Grand Forks 1-0 in theSection 8A semifinals lastyear, only to fall 4-1 toWarroad in the champi-onship game. One thing the currentProwlers team has in itsfavor is experience anddepth. The lineup features eightseniors: forwards AvaSturgeon, Bela Nelson,Mady Anderson, TiaPetrescue and Kia McGlynn;and defensemen KatieNelson, Khloe Lund andLexi Huot. Juniors on the varsity ros-ter include forwards ShelbyBreiland and HaylieRogalla, and goaltenderGabriella Steele.Sophomores with varsityexperience include forwardsJenae Johnson and BellaAmiot; and defensemen
Breanna Lee and DaniellaNeibuhr. Also returning withvarsity experience is fresh-man Rachel Georgeson. Onevarsity newcomer is includeJayden Breiland, a ninth
grader from Red Lake Falls. The Section 8A tourna-ment begins Feb. 6.

Eight full seasons havecome and gone since ThiefRiver Falls last won a teamsection championship inwrestling. In 2011, Thief River Fallswon its second consecutivesection championship andthird in the previous fiveseasons. It was part of animpressive run of sectionchampionship matchappearances that ran for sixconsecutive seasons from2006 through 2011.
The run ended in 2012.Thief River Falls hasreached the section semifi-nal round in each of theeight seasons since 2011 – astreak that goes back to2006 – but the team is 0-8 inits last eight section semifi-nal duals. A big reason for ThiefRiver Falls section finalsdrought is the resurgence ofthe Perham wrestling pro-gram and the emergence ofthe Detroit Lakes program. Perham was a little downby its standards in 2010 and2011. The Yellowjacketswere eliminated by theProwlers in both 2010 and2011, but won section titlesin 2012 and 2013. Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus won the section titlein 2014 and it is the onlyteam not named Perham orThief River Falls to win thesection since Hibbing, nowin Section 7AA, won the titlein 2006. Perham reclaimed thetitle in 2015 and has won thepast five section team titles, with finishes of fifth, fifth, fifth, fourth and third atstate in those five seasons. Detroit Lakes won sectiontitles in 2004 and 2005, and
remained an above averageteam for the next 10 or soseasons, before returning toform in 2014 with a trip tothe section finals. TheLakers have reached the sec-tion championship matchfour times in the past sixyears, including a 32-27 lossto Perham in 2018 that camedown to the heavyweightmatch. The question is, doesDetroit Lakes or Thief RiverFalls have what it takes toend Perham’s streak. Perham graduated a lot offirepower from its 2019 teamthat finished third in thestate. The Yellowjacketsaren’t as deep in 2020, butthey have still found ways towin dual meets and are cur-rently ranked fifth, which isthe highest ranking amongthe Section 8AA contenders. Detroit Lakes was consid-ered the front runner beforethe season began, but theloss of two-time state cham-pion Isaiah Thompson – to aknee injury suffered duringthe football season – hasweakened the Lakers’chances of contending thisyear. Still the Lakers arevery much in the race aftertying Perham 26-26 at the
Rick Lee Duals. Perham wonthe match on tiebreaker cri-teria. Thief River Falls lost toPerham 39-33 on openingnight, and it should have abetter idea of how it matchesup with Detroit Lakes afterthe teams meet Jan. 30 inThief River Falls. Much like previous ThiefRiver Falls wrestling teams, including the state teams in2007, 2010 and 2011, the2020 Thief River Falls teamfeatures a mix of strong sea-soned veterans and inexperi-enced underclassmen thatwill need to step up for theteam to contend for a statetournament berth. “We have to get better atnot giving up bonus points,”said Thief River Falls HeadWrestling Coach KennyGeiser. “That’s what thegood teams do, limit thedamage in their losses. Wealso need to get healthy, hav-ing our full line-up is a mustto win the section.” Individually, the Prowlersare led by returning statequalifiers Jake Davis andCole Johnson. Kale Geiser,Griffin Lundeen, CodyWienen, Brandon Zunigaand Mason Iverson are
returning section place win-ners who are looking to takethe next step in 2020. TheProwlers are also getting abig push from BradyKasprick, who was on paceto push for a top-two finishin the section last yearbefore injuries ended hisseason. “Brandon Zuniga hasimproved a lot, he’s wonsome big matches for us,”Geiser said. “GriffinLundeen has done amazing, jumping up a few weight
classes – he has such matu-rity for such a youngwrestler. Mason Iverson ishaving a dominant season, and has sealed some dualsfor us up top. Jake Davis,Cole Johnson, and BradyKasprick have been verydominant and are verytough outs for any team.Kale Geiser and CodyWienen are also having niceseasons, and have providedsome firepower as well.”

Young boys swimming team looks for improvement The Thief River Falls boysswimming team is veryyoung, with just one senior, three juniors and just onesophomore on its roster. Comparitively, the rosterincludes six freshmen, noeighth graders, three sev-
enth graders and four sixthgraders who practice withthe team but can’t competein varsity or JV events. “We do still have a prettyyoung team, with the ninthgrade class being our largestgroup,” said Head CoachDanielle Spiten. “I alwaysthink having a young teamis really exciting. It givesyou time to work with them,to develop great team cul-ture and ultimately it meanswe have a strong future out-look.” Nolan Smith, the team’slone senior, swims 50- and100-yard freestyle races. “Nolan has only been withus for two years, and theyhave been a great twoyears,” Spiten said. “He hasbeen working incrediblyhard and the kids really lookup to him. He has lost anincredible amount of time inboth the 50 and 100freestyle. His goals are tocontinue to lose time over
the season, and it is entirelypossible for him to place top16 this year at sections.” Joining Smith as teamcaptain is junior PaulKoppenhaver. Both swim-mers are a part of the 200and 400 freestyle relay racesand are joined by freshmenDrew Casavan and LealandVettleson. “Drew and Lealand areboth working pretty heavilyon some technique overhaulsthis season with our assis-tant coach Tim Cutler andare responding to that reallywell,” Spiten said. “Theyboth have been getting theirbest times this season.Lealand has the fastestsprint freestyle times so farthis season, so we have beenworking with him on hisendurance as well. PaulKoppenhaver ended last sea-son with great endurance, but really needed to work onhis kick. He worked a lotover the summer and this
season to perfect this andhas improved so much. Weare really proud of the fourboys in those two relays.” Spiten said another fresh-man who has shownimprovement this year isGavin Smith in the 200 IMand 100 freestyle. “Gavinstill has a lot to work on, buthis work ethic and techniquehas really improved this sea-son.” The boys swimming ros-ter includes: • Sixth grade - AndyDagg, Kaleb Funk, DracenHarding and Aaron Collins. • Seventh grade - LeviGerman: no specific event;Ethan Eidelbes: no specificevents. • Ninth grade - MathiasCarlson: No specific eventsyet; Gavin Smith: 200IMand 100 Free; Alex Krein:No specific events yet; RidgeFisher: 200 and 500freestyle; Jarek Martinsen:100 backstroke; Charlie

The Northland wrestlingprogram has experiencedseveral firsts during the2019-20 season – its seventhsince the program was rein-stated in fall of 2013 – andnone of them have been big-ger than the team’s invita-tion to participate in the jun-ior college division at theNWCA Multi-DivisonNational Duals. “We were only invited toparticipate one other time inprogram history – in August2015 – and we had alreadycommitted to wrestle in theLong Island Open that sameseason,” said NorthlandHead Coach Scott DCamp.“Getting invited is an honorand we always planned toaccept the invitation if wewere invited again.”
In previous seasons, theNWCA would invite the top16 teams from the previousnational tournament, regardless of whether theteams were scholarship ornon-scholarship. North-land’s best overall finish atnationals is 24th place in2015, but it has finished ashigh as sixth place amongnon-scholarship teams inthe tournament. This year, the NJCAALeadership Committee rec-ommended to the NWCAthat it invite only non-schol-arship teams to its nationalduals event. NortheasternOklahoma offered to host aseparate event for NJCAAscholarship teams on itscampus to allow for theNWCA to host a non-schol-arship tournament as part ofits Multi-Divison NationalDuals. Northland accepted theinvitation to attend nationalduals. The tournament wasslated to be held Jan. 10-11in Louisville, Ky. The only negative ofaccepting the invitation tonational duals was theMCAC dual meet schedule, which had been changedfrom a traditional schedule –that included two homeduals and two away dualsfor each team – to a one-daydual meet round-robbintournament set for Jan. 15in Rochester. “We knew that the dual
meet schedule would be agrind with back-to-back longtrips to Louisville andRochester in a one-weekspan,” DCamp said. “Still, the chance to wrestle sevenduals against teams fromour own division was toorare of an opportunity topass up.” The Northland wrestlingteam departed for Kentuckyafter practice on Tuesday,Jan. 7 and stopped for thenight in Rochester. The fol-lowing morning, the teamworked out at RochesterCommunity & TechnicalCollege and shared a buswith the RCTC wrestlingteam for the remainder ofthe 16-hour trip. Both teams practiced atthe Kentucky ExpositionCenter on Thursday, Jan. 9to prepare for Friday’s com-petiton. Northland fell to top-seeded Niagara CountyCommunity College 36-18 inthe opening round Fridaymorning. The followingmorning, Northlandknocked off JolietCommunity College 30-22 toadvance to the consolationchampionship match.Rowan College at GlousterCounty won nine of 10matches to defeat Northland47-6 in the consolationchampionship match. Northland’s travel part-ner, RCTC, defeated RowanCollege and Harper
Community College on dayone, but fell to NassauCommunity College in thechampionship match. Both teams returned toRochester at the conclusionof wrestling Saturday andthe Pioneers returned toThief River Falls earlySunday morning. Three days later, thePioneers were back on theroad for the MCAC duals onJan. 15. Northland opened thecompetition with a 48-9 winover Ridgewater, which isstruggling with low num-bers this season. Northland defeatedItasca for the second time in2019-20 in round two. ThePioneers claimed a 37-18win over the Vikings whenthe teams met for a non-con-ference dual Dec. 12 inGrand Rapids. Northlandclaimed the rematch 34-16. Next up was anotherrematch from the non-con-ference portion of the sched-ule. Northland opened itsdual meet season againstMinnesota West Nov. 15 inThief River Falls, and thevisiting Blue Jays tookadvantage of a shorthandedNorthland lineup to claim a36-21 win. In the rematch, it wasNorthland who had the fulllineup, as the Pioneers woneight of the 10 weight class-es in a 46-8 triumph over theBlue Jays.
Northland’s final oppo-nent in the round robbinwas tournament host RCTC.The Yellowjackets hadalready shut out the otherthree teams it faced on theday. The Pioneers didn’t faremuch better, falling 55-0 tothe Yellowjackets in thechampionship match. “This is one of thestrongest teams RCTC hasfielded since we have had aprogram at Northland,”DCamp said. “We led somematches early but didn’t doenough to get wins. We haveour work cut out for us atthe MCAC individual tour-nament next month.” The 2019-20 seasonmarks the fourth time inseven seasons that
Northland has finished inthe runner-up spot in theconference dual standings. The Pioneers’ regular sea-son winds down with a trioof open tournaments, includ-ing the inaugural NorthlandOpen on Saturday, Feb. 1.Due to a gym schedulingconflict, the open will beheld at Lincoln High Schoolin Thief River Falls. Confirmed participantsinclude wrestlers fromNorthland, Itasca,Ridgewater, ConcordiaCollege, University ofJamestown and MinnesotaState University Moorhead.Wrestling is set to begin at10:30 a.m.

The Northland women’sbasketball team is used towinning games, winning theMCAC Northern Divison, winning the Region 13BTournament and advancingto the NJCAA Divison IIINational Tournament. Last year, the Pioneerswere seeking their fifth con-secutive Region 13B champi-onship, but those plans were
thwarted by the HibbingCardinals. The Pioneers andCardinals were responsiblefor the lone loss on eachteam’s conference record.Hibbing won the rights tohost the region tournamentvia a coin toss and claimedthe rubber match 67-62. The Pioneers return fivesophomores from last year’sregion runner-up squad. They include: forwards HollySteer, 5-11, Warren; BaileyGreene, 5-9, Thief RiverFalls; and Carly Mekash, 5-9, Greenbush; and guardsJanie Wunderlich, 5-6,Perham; and JoziHalvorson, 5-4, Red LakeFalls. Newcomers include fresh-men Emma Waling, 5-6,Roseau; Macy Skyberg, 5-7,East Grand Forks; AlexSyverson, 5-11, Bagley; andTessani Peterson, 5-9,Middle River. Missing from the lineup isa big post player. Everyyear since 2014, a Northlandpost player has been namedan All-American. Among thepost players to receive All-
American accolades onNorthland Head CoachShannon Nelson’s watch areBrooke Heggie, MeganSwedberg, ShaRon Millerand Crystal Amundson. Heading into the season,Nelson viewed the lack of abig post player as a chal-lenge to be overcome. “We are changing theplays that we run,” Nelsonadded. “We are changing ourdefenses, our style of play –we want to get a shot off inthe first 15 seconds – wewant to get the ball downthe floor and attack becauseour speed is our strengthand we need to play to that.” Northland’s speed-based,up tempo offense struggledagainst bigger teams earlyin the season. While theoffense was still getting insync, the Pioneers droppedfour consecutive games toscholarship programs:University of Jamestown JV,Lake Region State College,North Dakota State Collegeof Science, and a secondgame to Lake Region StateCollege.
Following the 0-4 start, the Pioneers reeled off 10consecutive wins to improveto 10-4. The Pioneers havepicked up wins overMinnesota West,Ridgewater, Western Tech,Dakota College atBottineau, CanadianMennonite, Central Lakes,Itasca, Mesabi Range,Vermilion and defendingRegion 13B championHibbing. Mekash, 18.6 points pergame, 11 rebounds pergame; Wunderlich, 15.3 ppg,6.1 rpg; and Macy Skyberg,9.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, are theteam’s top scorers andrebounders. Greene leadsthe team in assists, with 44. Northland’s winningstreak was snapped lastweek in a 64-41 setback atRainy River, and thePioneers now trail theVoyageurs by one game inthe MCAC Northern Divisonstandings.

Thief River Falls is onceagain in the mix in a deepSection 8A boys hockey fieldthat also includes steadilyimproving Kittson Central, defending section championEast Grand Forks andWarroad, which is 16-1 with
seven games left to play. Warroad has been rankedas high as number one over-all in Class A earlier thisyear and the Warriors cur-rently ranked third in thelatest Let’s Play Hockey poll. Warroad swept ThiefRiver Falls in the squads’two regular season meet-ings. Both games went intoovertime, with the Warriorsclaiming the first meeting bya 2-1 score Dec. 12 inWarroad, and the secondmeeting by a 4-3 score inThief River Falls. Warroad defeated EastGrand Forks 6-4 in theteams’ first head-to-headmeeting Dec. 20 in EastGrand Forks. The teams areslated to meet again Feb. 4in Warroad. East Grand Forks, 11-3-2,is still eye-balling the topseed in the section and itcurrently has the insidetrack on the section’s num-ber two seed after shuttingout Thief River Falls 3-0Jan. 11.
Thief River Falls, 9-7-1,still has a shot at the two-seed if it can pick up a win atEast Grand Forks Feb. 11. Section play begins Feb.18, with the play-in round, followed by quarterfinals onFeb. 20, both at high seeds.Thief River Falls hosts thesemifinal round Feb. 22 andsection championship gameFeb. 27. Through 17 games, theProwlers’ top scorers areTucker Skime, Evan Bushyand Brock Masseth with 26,24 and 18 points, respective-ly. Skime is the team’s topgoal-scorer with 11, followedby Masseth with nine,Bushy with eight and KadenBakken with seven. Bushy leads the team inassists with 16, followed bySkime with 15, Masseth andBrendan Bottem with nineeach, and Blake Biermaierwith eight. Much like its road to astrong defense and superbgoaltending to a 15-9-3 mark
in 2018-19, the 2019-20 ver-sion of the Thief River FallsBoys Hockey Team relies onstrong defense and timelyscoring to win games. Excluding its 2-2 tieagainst Little Falls, ThiefRiver Falls has played sixgames that have been decid-ed by a single goal, with a 3-3 record overall, and 1-2overtime mark, in thosegames. “It seems like we play alot of overtime games andlimiting our mental mis-takes will be key to winninggames in the playoffs,” saidThief River Falls HeadCoach Tim Bergland. “It willbe a tough road with a lot oftalent in the section. EGF isvery good as well so to winthe section we will have tobe playing our best hockey inFebruary.”
