2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Qualification System

The IAAF have introduced a new qualification system for the 2020 Olympic Games.

The system allows athletes to qualify by achieving an IAAF Standard or by their position in the new World Ranking points system.

AC will nominate as many athletes as possible* based on the lists that the IAAF will publish on June 3, 2020 for Marathon & 50k walks and July 1, 2020 for all other events.

These IAAF lists will name all athletes and relay squads qualified by either the IAAF Standard orby World Ranking points.

Trials winners will have priority and will be nominated* if they are on the IAAF lists.

* Athletes must also be eligible for nomination as detailed in the AC Olympic Nomination Criteria.

2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Qualification System

The new system allows the IAAF / IOC to:

Control the field sizes; and

Ensure that the top athletes in the world qualify based on:

Very high level performances (the IAAF Standards) or

Good results at high level meetings (the World Ranking points system).

For most events the field sizes have not changed significantly.

First the IAAF will identify all of the athletes with the IAAF Standard

In this example eight athletes from three countries have the IAAF Standard.Only three athletes per country can compete so the IAAF Standard “fills” a maximum of six quota slots (any three Canadians plus three others).

How it will work

• On July 1, 2020 the IAAF will publish the full list of qualified, selectable, athletes.

• On July 2, 2020 the NTC will nominate up to three of the eligible Canadian athletes.

• On July 3, 2020 the COC will confirm athlete selections based on the NTC’s nominations.

• Important note 1: These timelines mean that athletes only have 24 hours to lodge an appeal.

• Some countries may not enter athletes on the IAAF list, leaving free places in the Event Quota.

On July 4 & July 5,2020, the IAAF will offer any “released” Event Quota slots to the next athletes on the World Ranking points list (Liam from Ireland is next in line in the example on the earlier slides).Important note 2: AC will not make use of these additional places, we will only nominate from those athletes qualified according to the IAAF list published on July 1, 2020.

• On July 6, 2020 the IOC closes entries for the 2020 Olympic Games all sports.

The Devil is in the Detail• The previous slides explain the basic qualification and selection process for all events at the 2020 Olympic

Games however some of the details vary for specific events (for example the IAAF will publish their qualified athlete lists on June 3, 2020 for the 50k Walk and the Marathon and we’ll select on June 4).

• The Olympic Selection Criteria contains all of the details for every event.  If there is any confusion or mixed messages then what is contained in the AC Olympic Selection Criteria is always correct.

• We have also created a “quick guide” for every event that summaries the information that follows, copies of the quick guide will be in the “Criteria” section of the AC website.

Qualification PeriodsWe have used the maximum IAAF qualification period for all events.

Selection Meetings• There will be initial selection meetings for the long endurance events:

• These early selections are to give athletes in these events, which are rarely contested late in the T&F season, as much time to prepare as possible.

• Only athletes qualified by IAAF Standard can be selected at an initial selection meeting.• A space must be saved for the Trials winner, even if they do not have an IAAF Standard by the time of the

initial selection meeting.• Apart from the space for the Trials winner, the NTC may leave places to be selected at the final selection

meeting or may fill all of the remaining spaces at the initial selection meeting.

• There will be final selection meetings the day after the IAAF publish the list of qualified athletes (eg athletes qualified by IAAF Standard or World Ranking Points).

• The Trails winner will be selected at the final selection meeting (if he/she is eligible and on the IAAF list).

World Ranking points• The IAAF World Ranking points system is complex.  The rules for every event are different.  There are full details at: www.iaaf.org/world‐ranking‐rules

• In this presentation we’ll only give a brief outline of how the points work.  There is too much detail to look at individual situations and you can also read exactly what we can read !

• How to “play” the system for an athlete looking to qualify for the Olympic Games is an exercise for each individual coach and athlete.

• The system strongly rewards “Performance on Demand” and so a simple approach would be to run (jump, throw or walk) your best in the biggest competitions that you can get into .

World Ranking points• A basic summary of how the points work:

• Every competition performance within the qualifying period is given a score.

• The score is calculated as: • The IAAF Points Score for the time / height / distance (this is by far the biggest part of the score) plus• A bonus score that depends on the level of the competition & where the athlete finished plus• A number of event specific adjustments (eg for the wind reading in the sprints) minus• A “date correction” for older performances.

• An athlete’s World Ranking point score is the average of their best scores within the qualifying period.

• Scores in related events may also be counted (eg 60m results can be counted for 100m runners).

• The current World Ranking points lists are at https://www.iaaf.org/world‐rankings if you click on an athlete’s name you will see how their score was calculated.
