St. John College of Engineering and Management
The academic year 2019 – 2020 holds a special place in the hearts
and minds of everyone at the St John Technical and Education
Campus as it marks the end of the decennial year of the formation of
the various institutions here. I am glad to see the progress that the
various institutions have made over the years. For us at St. John,
imparting the right education is equipping a child not only with the
knowledge, but also empowering them with abilities and skills to
face the various challenges of life. We particularly intend to instil in
all our learners a strong value and belief system that inspires them to
contribute to society. We believe that a strong moral and ethical
foundation creates good citizens who make the world a better place
by contributing to the Community, Country and the Global Arena.
The hard work and dedication of the Management, Dy. Campus Director, Principals and HODs have
made it possible to achieve NAAC Accreditation in the engineering and pharmacy institutes and
NBA Accreditation in the Pharmacy Institute. The efforts of the faculty and students have led to a
number of University ranks and paper publications in renowned journals.
The campus has achieved a number of feats in the academic circles of this part of Maharashtra, from
being only the second Engineering College with a NABL Accredited Lab in Maharashtra, to the
number of doctorates that we count amongst our faculty across the Campus.
As this decade comes to an end, we look back at it as the formative decade in the history of the St.
John Technical and Education Campus. The Institutes, Courses and students have multiplied and we
have hit great heights in terms of Academic, Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Achievements.
However, as we step forward into the next decade, we find ourselves at a converging point. 2020 has
been portrayed as the year of quantum changes in all activities around us. New technologies,
practices and skills are ready to be rolled out as the Digital Era in India gathers momentum at full
steam. We, at St. John, should be ready to embrace these innovations and guide every single
student who walks into our Campus to emerge as Employable and Value-Driven Citizen of modern
India.
It is also essential that we build stronger ties and continue to work closely with the various sectors of
Industry. Practical, Operational Knowledge is the need of the hour, and Industry-Institute
Interaction will benefit all our Institutes right from Design of Curriculum to Industry Sponsored
Research and the gainful employment of our Students.
I sincerely urge all the stake holders of the campus, i.e. the students, the management, the teaching
and the non-teaching staff to continue to put in their best efforts to take the campus to new heights.
We need to continuously challenge ourselves to be better than what we were, yesterday. With the
accomplishments of the past decade, I am certain that the following decade will have a lot to offer.
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've
been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
DEPUTY DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Happy New Year 2020 and Greetings from St. John Technical and
Educational Campus!
Congratulations to the editorial team of each college for their
efforts in capturing the prominent events and achievements of
their respective departments and compiling them into this
annual bouquet of magazines – Spectrum, Coalesce, Scintilla
and Prism. Every specialisation is exclusive, every department is
distinctive, every student is unique and these attributes are very
well portrayed in each of these compilations which is a rich
collation of talent, creativity and aptitude.
Programmes and Courses with specialisations in various disciplines provide students with
technical skills and expertise, but participation in all the ancillary activities, which are part of
the curriculum, enhance holistic development and build competencies that are essential for
a successful professional career. Compliments to the teaching faculty across the campus for
focussing not only on academic development, supported by the several certification
programmes, but also planning and coordinating several activities that have contributed to
the overall progress of our student community, outcomes of which are visible in the several
ranks, awards, recognitions and excellent placements in the last year. Accolades to our
students for their sincere participation and involvement in all academic, college and
campus activities; their enthusiasm and energy has been the major driving force for the
initiation of several annual events like
……….
With each passing year a new batch of students comes in and adds to our wealth of
knowledge, aptitude, skills and talent. As a campus our efforts are always towards
enhancing the capabilities of our graduates and providing them avenues for development
and life-long learning. I welcome every student stepping into the portals of St. John
Technical and Educational Campus and assure them an enriching experience during their
academic programme and a successful career ahead.

DEAN’S MESSAGE
A typical Indian farmer generally starts with yearly crop of grain
or vegetable and progresses towards horticulture which bear
fruits for decades and supports the family in old age. However,
Chairman, Mr. Albert W D’Souza, the young son of a farmer
moved from Mangalore to Mumbai, was distinctly different.
While attending to his farm in the Dahanu Palghar region, this
young entrepreneur, observed that the youth in the region need
more educational facilities which will help them meet their
aspirations, uplift their standards of living for the family, set
example and spread education. That is how St. John Technical
and Educational Campus came to its being.
Within 11 years of its inception, St. John Campus has grown not only in terms of number of
students, courses and staff but has abundantly developed in academics. The formal
education is always complemented with number of beyond the syllabus activities such as
Communication Skills, STEP, CREPT, CSSPD, BYB, IVs, Internship, Project work, Short Term
Courses etc. The Campus has also initiated enhancement of Sports and Arts. All this was
possible only because of participation from students and most importantly
encouragement from Industry and Academia. Our Academic Advisory Council consists of
prominent people from Industry and Academic world. They visit us regularly, review our
work and advise us for further development which we untiringly pursue. We are thankful to
these experts and experienced personalities who continuously guide us.
We are confident that, some more initiatives of skills development in the form of certificate
courses in GST, Digital Marketing, HR Analytics; and students’ enthusiastic participation in
such courses, will give them employability edge over others.
We congratulate our faculty and students for their continual efforts and wish them every
success and very happy 2020.

“Ambition is the path to success, persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.“
- William Eardley IV
Welcome to Scintilla, a yearly magazine about the life at the Master of Management Studies
(MMS) Post-Graduate Department of St. John College of Engineering and Management
(SJCEM), Palghar. The name, ‘Scintilla’ means a spark or a flash. It is said that a spark is enough
to start a revolution. At SJCEM – MMS Department we strive to create such a spark in each and
every student which will transform them into responsible leaders and managers, and
eventually benefit the society at large.
The past year was full of various activities by the students in academics, co-curricular, extra-
curricular as well as research & development. Apart from classroom learning, the students
gained practical knowledge and experience through internship and industrial visits. They
were exposed to latest trends in the industry through a plethora of guest lectures from
industry experts on a variety of topics.
The MMS Department was abuzz with various events and activities throughout the year.
These events not only helped the students to hone their event management and
administration skills but they also helped them interact and network with many industry and
academic stalwarts. A visit to the old age home made the students aware about their social
responsibility and the needs of the destitutes. Various industrial visits gave the students
insights on the internal working environment of the industry and broadened their outlook.
I would like to thank all the students who contributed articles towards this issue of Scintilla.
The articles carry interesting and useful information, both in their theme and content. The
articles consist of various topics related to Economy, Business, General management and
other allied management disciplines. I would also like to thank our faculty members, staff and
students for a regular contribution of materials and photographs for the magazine.
Wishing you a very happy and prosperous New Year – 2020. We look forward to your
feedback, comments and suggestions.

As it is rightly said “Every ending has a new beginning”, the Farewell is not just a goodbye but also
best wishes for a bright future. Every year the students of MMS First year conduct a farewell party
for their seniors.
Accordingly, Farewell 2019 was conducted on 30 March 2019. The programme began at 2.00 pm
with a prayer and the college anthem. The Secretary of Aldel Education Trust, Mrs. Elvina D’Souza
and the Treasurer of the Trust, Mrs. Elaine D’Souza Buthello attended the event.
The HOD, Dr. Omprakash Ashtankar, gave a speech addressing the students. MMS Second year
students – Mr. Karanraj Panchal, Ms. Nisha Shetty and Ms. Puja Narvekar gave short speeches,
sharing their experiences at the college.
The students of MMS-I engaged the audience with games, dances, songs and spot prizes. In
addition, a short video was played to walk students down the memory lane. For the first time, a
beverage stall serving mocktails was erected and manned by a student, Mr. Shivraj Tripathi. A
scrap book and a message scroll were introduced too. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food
was served.
The programme ended with Vote of Thanks followed by the National Anthem. A DJ session
rounded off the perfectly organized event.

IMPORTANCE OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION
“A strong confident person can rule the room with knowledge, personal style, attitude and great
posture.”
“Proper posture sends a positive message since 90% of all communication occurs through body
language and how you carry yourself.”
Apart from the intellectual skills one possesses, one should also have a good body language.
Whether to crack an interview or give a presentation or just have a one to one interaction, good
body language can greatly help. The ability to scan people's visual communication and transmit the
correct signals yourself, is crucial to anyone who desires to advance their career.
It is said that only 7% of what you say is conveyed by the words, 38% is by the pauses and voice
modulations. The most important way to convey things are by one's own body language. Majorly
body language covers 55% of the message.
A command over body language has become an important skill in today's competitive world. It is
the X-factor that completes the personalities of officers, entertainers, politicians, celebrities, and
many more. Communication may not always be through sound or language. Postures, gestures and
movement of eyes can communicate a great deal.
Body language can correspond to one's attitude and one's state of mind. For example, aggression,
mood, boredom, entertainment and happiness can give many other emotions. The important thing
is that humans send and understand signals through the body in an unknown way.
It has been said that "THE BODY NEVER LIES”
Following are some of the things one should know about body language:
1) First impression is often the last impression.
2) Gestures are as important as your speech.
3) Face to Face communication is the most important form of communication.
4) If you don't understand body language, you will miss most of the conversation.
As a management student, only passing the exams is not important, but building a good personality
and body language is also an equally important aspect. The more you observe your body language
the more it will help you to succeed. It also helps to physically observe the communication signs of
others. We can interpret various things by knowing body language.
Body Language has become a major subject in today's managerial world. A good posture, decent
gestures and healthy facial expressions can lead to a good body language.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING
Social media or digital marketing social media

Benefits of Social Media Marketing
Social Media Marketing strategy
Disadvantages of Social Media Marketing
- Hetal Ambaliya
MMS I
is the use of platforms to connect with the desired
audience for brand building, increasing revenue, and acquire more customers. The top
platforms currently, are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest etc.
People and companies use social media sites to inform general public and their selected audience
about services and products. Business owners can set up social media pages for free, connecting to
a large global audience without the overheads of other methods of advertising. Apart from finding
new customers, social media channels are also used to keep contact with existing customers and
provide support.
There are hundreds of social media websites that give digital markets a means to easily promote
their content and share it with other people. Many social networks provide comprehensive
information ranging from geographic and demographic information to personal information. This
allows a digital marketer to document their message to specific groups or people, hopefully
increasing their reach and conversion, ensuring that the company's message reaches the right
audience.
Marketing campaigns conducted on social media have the added benefit of appealing to a wider
audience. A single campaign can appeal to both potential and current customers, media, personal
bloggers, employees, and the general public. Social media sites often provide their own metrics to
analyze the effectiveness of a campaign, but there are also many third-party applications that can
analyze the reach, customer feedback, return-on-investment, and many other metrics.
Social media marketing strategy is heavily used to create viral content. This is the content that has
been specially developed so that users will share it with their family, friends and colleagues. This is a
word-of-mouth strategy for the digital age, and it can be quite effective if done properly. Apart from
spreading the message quickly and widely, a viral campaign also provides an implicit endorsement
when shared by someone known and trusted by the recipient. Social media marketing can also
encourage users to create and share their own content in the form of reviews or comments.
Social media can have many benefits, but if it is used to share information that can harm a
company, it can be a double-edged sword. Even if a negative testimony is
immediately addressed, and even if it turns out to be false, it can still have
long-term negative consequences. In this case, a social media campaign can
be a good marketing strategy to restore trust.

People Focused:
Do you think an excellent manager can be a good leader? What is the difference between
leadership and management?
Leadership and Management are two different aspects. In leadership, people follow the leader and
in management people work for the manager.
Leadership is not just about being . Leadership is about taking care of those who are
.
A business owner has to be strong enough to be a leader and manager to build high performance
team and to lead them towards the business vision and mission which results in success. Leadership
is all about how you express your vision to people who work to achieve your long term goals, while
managing is about supervising the work people do on a regular basis.
They are crucial to get your people to believe you and build the trust
within them. Being honest towards your goal ultimately result in success.
You must self analyse where you are, and where you want to be and mould your team
in charting a way for the future.
Inspiring your team to give their best in what they can, by making sure they
understand their role in achieving the ultimate goal.
Do the work in smart and unique way, think out of the box, extend your
limits and don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo.
You must inform your team about the journey, at present where you
are and where you are heading towards. Small doubts can sum up to huge obstacles, so it’s
better to clear all the doubts and roadblocks you may face while your journey is on.
Take a strategic vision and break it down into mission to
road-map to be followed by the team.
Provide direction to the work efforts, review the resources and anticipate
needs for the present and future.
Establish sets of work rules, planning and processes, standards and
operating procedures.
Take care of your people, their needs and wants, listen to them and involve
them in different tasks.

Difference between a Leader and a Manager -
From Manager to Leader -
Lead by example:
Encourage feedback
Turn goals into visions:
- Parth Sanjay Gharat
MMS-I
A leader looks after a team while a manager oversees a team.
A leader casts a vision for the team whereas a manager is an expert in getting things done.
Innovation is must for a leader whereas a manager uses what works.
A leader takes risks whereas a manager mitigates the risk.
A leader focuses on relationship whereas a manager focuses on objectives.
Leadership is about empowering ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Leaders focus on the
people they need to influence in order to realize their vision. They command loyalty and trust by
always delivering on their promise. Managers focus on the structures necessary to set and achieve
goals. They make sure that the systems are in place to attain desired outcomes.
Managers can become good leaders if they want to. They just need to have the requisite leadership
qualities in them:
Managers need to sometimes stop directing and lead by example. They
should show the direction and not only the destination. By walking your talk, you become a
person others want to follow.
: Being receptive to feedback is one of the important characteristics of a
leader. If you want to do things differently and make others see the bigger picture, you need
to understand how they think of your ideas and you as a person. Leaders are always looking
to improve themselves and their relationships with their followers.
Managers are more focused on goals, achieving them or
strategizing ways to achieve them. A leader needs to look beyond goals. They need to look at
the bigger picture. To be a leader, a manager has to translate goals into vision which can take
the team/organisation forward.
Both leaders and managers are necessary for an organization to succeed. A good leader and
manager can help the organization to survive in the long run and have an edge over its competitors.

STRESS MANAGEMENT
Stress management is a wide variety of techniques and psychotherapies for controlling a person's
level of stress, usually for the purpose of and for the motive of improving everyday functioning.
Stress produces many physical and mental symptoms that may vary with individual to individual.
Some of them are as follows:
Increase in blood pressure and pulse rate
Faster breathing
Slowdown of the digestive system
Immunity decreases
Muscles become tense
Prevents sleep
Our reaction to difficult situations determines the impact of stress on us and our health.
According to American Psychological Association (APA), there are 3 different types stress – acute
stress, episodic acute stress, and chronic stress. The 3 types of stress, each has its own
characteristics, symptoms, duration, and approaches to treatment.
It is a short-term stress and the most common way that the stress occurs. Acute stress is often
caused by thinking about the pressures of events that have recently occurred, or upcoming
demands in the near future. The effects of short-term stress are tension, headaches and an upset
stomach as well as a moderate amount of distress. Continuous or repeated instances of acute stress
over a long period can become chronic and harmful.
People who frequently experience acute stress, or whose lives present frequent triggers of stress,
have episodic acute stress. Persons with too many tasks and lack of organization can develop
episodic stress symptoms. Individuals who worry too much on a constant basis can also fall prey to
this type of stress.
Episodic Acute stress can also lead to high blood pressure and heart disease.
This is the most harmful type of stress.
Continuous poverty, dysfunctional family, or an unhappy marriage can cause chronic stress. It can
also be caused by a traumatic experience early in life.
People with chronic stress are likely to have serious health issues that can lead to suicide, violent
actions, heart attacks, and strokes.
Types of Stress:
1. Acute Stress
2. Episodic Acute Stress
3. Chronic Stress

SOVEREIGN CREDIT RATING
A few months back, Moody's, an international credit rating agency, lowered India's rating from
'stable' to 'negative'. Sovereign credit rating refers to credit rating given to a sovereign country or
entity on the basis of financial aspects or credit-worthiness of the country.
These ratings are conducted every year by three major worldwide credit rating agencies. The three
most popular sovereign rating agencies are Fitch, Moody’s and Standard & Poor. Sovereign ratings
have become increasingly important as countries around the world tap the international bond
markets. These ratings have the most influence over market decision makers. Investors can find out
sovereign ratings from the websites of these credit rating agencies.
In determining the country's credit rating, the data published by a government, statistics published
by various financial institutions and research institutes from time to time, reports of corporate
companies are all studied. Sovereign Credit ratings are calculated on the basis of the following
financial factors i.e. per capita income, GDP, Inflation, country’s external debt, countries history of
defaulting loans and political situation of the country. These factors decide the creditworthiness of
the country. Occasionally consultations with government officials, big corporate corporations, and
economists are also conducted. Wherever government decisions are concerned, the rating is taken
into consideration. The rating agencies change the standard assigned to the country after a certain
period or announces an updated version.
These ratings are measured on the scale of “AAA” to “D”. “AAA” denotes highest degree of safety
towards credit. “BBB” denotes moderate credit risk. “CCC” denotes high credit risk of default and
“DDD” denotes having default history. Along with these ratings (+) and (-) sign also mentioned
where (+) sign indicates credit rating outlook may upgrade in the future and (-) sign indicates credit
ratings may downgrade in the future.
Credit rating has significant effect on the interest rates on the various types of loans within the
country - e.g. USA has a credit rating “AAA” as its credit worthiness is good hence the interest rates
on its loans are lower compared to interest rates in India. Wherein India has credit rating of “BBB-’’,
Venezuela is the example of “DDD” rating as it has high inflation, highly political unstable
conditions, high unemployment, Very low GDP growth and very high risk of default. Hence it has
been observed many investors takes these ratings under consideration before taking decision
about investments.
Foreign investors, international financial institutions etc. make their investment decisions based on
these criteria. If all the leading credit rating agencies start to lower a government's rating level, then
the negative effects of it at the international level will emerge.

ONLINE EDUCATION – OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Online education in India has been on an upward swing in the last few years & the trend is expected
to continue in the coming years. Due to growing population the number of students are increasing.
The dilemma is –
Let us look at the while studying online -
By studying online, you choose your own learning environment that
works best for your needs – be it your cafe across the street or your local gym, listening to
your instructor’s lecture podcast as you run on the treadmill. Isn’t it awesome?
It is true that “studying online requires more self-
motivation and time management skills” because you will spend a lot of time on your own
without someone physically close to keep you focused on deadlines. On a positive note, it will
also help you become more self-motivated which will look great on your resume.
In online education all the course material is provided beforehand,
students learn it by taking their own time. Students can clarify their doubts on live chats or
forums as well.
No cost to be incurred for various things like accommodation and
transportation while saving time used for commuting. Also you may be able to earn by
working full-time or part-time.
Degrees approved by Distance Education Council (DEC)
are accepted by many companies and employers in India. Many employers also encourage
their employees to study and learn online.
Despite the various advantages in online learning, there are few that still remain to be
by the potential student.
Most of the students have spent majority of their educational
tenure in traditional classrooms. As a result, skill-sets and learning styles tend to develop as
an accomplishment because of this in-person learning environment.
In traditional classes there are number of other activities which can
be performed but in online education students don’t get a chance to participate in other
activities.
Many students lack the self-discipline and motivation
required to complete an online course. As a result, they may lag behind or leave the course.
Online education has boosted the education system through various online applications. With
these online applications you can enhance your skills and opportunities in your career.
However, for all-round, holistic development of students that includes interpersonal
relationships, skills, training, mentoring etc., traditional classroom learning is required.
