Impact Study of the horse industry in Louisiana reports thatLouisiana horse racing facilities and races generated over $1 billionin gaming in the United States. This study was conducted by DekTerrell Ph.D. of Lewis, Terrell and Associates states that the totaldirect injection from the Louisiana horse racing industry intoLouisiana’s economy for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016 was$578 million. Louisiana horse racing created a total of 12,640Louisiana jobs, which translate into $328 million in earnings gener-ated during the most recent year. Louisiana received over $64 mil-lion directly from the horse industry in state taxes during the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016. When taxes generated indirectlyare included, state tax revenues from horse racing are over $73 mil-lion. I would suggest that you make every effort to communicateto our State Legislators, especially the newly elected ones, what ourindustry contributes to the economic well being of our state, partic-ularly through the creation of numerous jobs. Clear Creek Stud was founded in 1969 by renowned horsemanJack Lohman. Over the years Clear Creek Stud has become knownas Louisiana's premier Thoroughbred operation. In 1977, ValMurrell, upon graduating from LSU, joined Lohman as his assistant. Soon after, Murrell assumed management duties andmaintained that position through several ownership changes atClear Creek Stud including the partnership of Jack Lohman andC.T. Carden and continuing when C.T. Carden bought Lohman'sownership in the farm. Eventually Val and some partners boughtClear Creek Stud from the Estate of C.T. Carden. Like many of you, I grew up in a 4-H Program. I learned plenty and

have a tremendous appreciation ofthose times with 4 - H l e a d e r sg u i d i n g a n d supporting youngp e o p l e . M a n y parents took thetime to help many children, besidestheir own, and the young people them-selves helped one another while at thesame time competing.

Alot of that seems to have dwindledover time and we currently have a

group headed by Neely Walker work-ing to rekindle this fire. They are striv-ing to rebuild the Louisiana 4-HProgram to once again have a signifi-cant impact on our next generation ofhorseman and citizens who will matureand continue the process over and overagain, to keep the flames burning.

Please join forces and contact theseleaders [[email protected]]

to see what you might do to advancethe cause. I consider it a most impor-tant and noble endeavor that weshould all be very proud of supporting.
