2020 National Junior Brangus Show and Futurity Entry Booklet • Page 24 2020 ROGER AND JANET GREUEL SPEECH CONTEST HighPoint Calculation: Participation is required to win HighPoint and points based on rank are awarded. Divisions: Three age divisions: Junior (ages 7-12), Intermediate (ages 13-16), and Senior (ages 17-21). Sponsor Information: Roger and Janet Greuel of Greuel Family Brangus are the presenting sponsor of the Speech Contest. The winner in each division will receive a $200 cash award. The Greuel’s will also be sponsoring a Triple Crown Speech Award worth $1000 for any individual who wins the Speech Contest in all three age divisions during their NJBS tenure, beginning with participants who fell into the Junior Age Division at the 2017 NJBS. JUNIOR DIVISION (AGES 7-12): Content: The topic for the junior division can be any aspect concerning Brangus cattle or the beef industry. Rules: If entries do not meet the following requirements, they will be disqualified. All speeches must pertain to the described topic. The speech cannot have been presented for competition at a previous NJBS. Contestants will be required to submit electronically a typewritten, double-spaced copy of their speech (with bibliography). Upload your file through the online NJBS Contest Registration or email it to [email protected] by 5:00 pm on Sunday, July 5. Failure to complete your NJBS Contest Registration will result in disqualification. No minimum time limit is applied to juniors but there is a maximum limit of six minutes. Contestants will draw for order within their age group with the youngest age group speaking first. Junior division contestants will be permitted to use a maximum of five (5) 3x5 inch note cards. All writing must be on only one side of each card. Contestants submit their note cards to their speech monitor prior to speaking for review. Notecards will be evaluated for adherence to these rules and then returned as the contestant is called up to present their speech. INTERMEDIATE DIVISION (AGES 13-16): Content: The topic for the Intermediate division is: “Is the creation of plant-based meat (fake meat), a threat to the Beef Industry? If so, how can we as cattlemen explain to the consumers that real meat is more beneficial than fake meat?” Rules: If entries do not meet the following requirements, they will be disqualified. SenIor DIvISIon (ageS 17-21): Content: The senior public speaking contest is an impromptu speech format where contestants will be given a current beef industry topic and then be given information for that topic to research and write their speech. rules: If entries do not meet the following requirements, they will be disqualified.• All speeches must pertain to the given topic.• Contestants must arrive at the time posted for their alotted preparation time. • Participants will be will be given 30 minutes for preparation of their speech. At the end of that time, they will be ushered to the judging

room and deliver their speech. • Senior division contestants will be furnished with and permitted to use a maximum of three (3) 3x5 inch note cards. All writing must

be on only one side of each card. • The minimum time requirement for the senior level will be two (2) minutes with a maximum of six (6) minutes.

evaluation Criteria: Judges will be furnished with typewritten copies of the contestants’ speeches for the younger divisions and the speech topic for the senior division. Each judge will be allowed to ask questions after a speech is given and contestants may be scored on their ability to answer questions. After each contestant has made his/her presentation, they will be scored on composition and delivery. Specific judging criteria includes: their ability to gain the audiences’ attention and interest, the organization and execution of their talking points, their abiity to speak clearly and clearly convey their topic. Excessive reference to notes may result in deductions from his/her score. No visual aids of any kind will be allowed, just the junior and their note cards. A time keeper will record the time used by each contestant in delivering speech, noting under time and overtime, if any, for which deductions will be made.
