Mission To provide urban youth with team-based education programs that promote health & well-being, academic engagement, and civic leadership.

Vision For all youth to unlock their full potential – body, mind, and soul.

Partners

Boston Scores is one of the largest school-based after-school providers in Boston. We provide disadvantaged students in grades

K-12 with team-based soccer and enrichment programs.

We deliver the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s “Soccer for Success” curriculum that emphasizes nutrition education, fitness, family

engagement, and mentorship. These teams meet on the field for soccer practices and games, and also meet in the classroom where they engage in team-based experiential enrichment programs such as our nationally acclaimed “Power of Poetry” and “One Hen” social

entrepreneurship programs.

This year we completed a two-year partnership with the Fund for Shared Insight, during which we reached out to parents and students to ask how Boston Scores can improve. One outcome we tracked was our Net Promoter Score (NPS), which measures how likely a participant is to recommend our programming. We scored a 62, compared to other Education Services organizations across the nation who averaged a 53.

Corporations are teaming up with Boston Scores to bring fun and engaging Field Days to Boston Public School students. Teams of corporate volunteers join groups of elementary, middle or high school Scores students for 1.5 hours of activities. Our traditional activities include soccer scrimmages, nutrition or enrichment relay races, and can also include school clean-ups, landscape projects and more.

A primary focus of Scores’ High School Program is to help students deepen their growth mindset. This year, we rolled out our Playbook which is designed to help students achieve their personal, athletic and academic goals. More than half of our students come from low-income households and will be the first members of their family to attend college. This is where the Playbook helps our students to set a vision and choose a course as they navigate their path through a fast-changing world.

Our year of piloting a program for students in K-2 was a huge success. Junior Scores fosters students’ social and emotional skills through the game of soccer and our early literacy program, Playing with Words. Throughout the 18-week program, students read stories built around key social and emotional skills like self-awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and decision making. These skills are reinforced in their soccer lessons. Social and emotional skills and early literacy have shown to be highly predictive of academic success. Thanks to our supporters, we plan to to triple the number of Junior Scores programs for the 2019-20 school year!

We celebrated 10 years of One Hen with the five founders of the program at our 2019 Hatch the Future Event and introduced our One Hen Founders’ Cup. Student teams from our middle school, high school, and pilot elementary school programs set up shop at our Kid’s Marketplaces and used this opportunity as a Sell Day for their charities. Supporters of Boston Scores got the chance to hear about the students’ experiences and how much the One Hen program has impacted them.

Our elementary schools created 15 different Service Plans as part of our Writing for the Community curriculum. The causes that teams chose to support included homelessness, hunger, literacy, bullying and suicide prevention, foster families, and support of families in hospitals. Many of these projects were identified through Days of Action, where students and their coaches went out into their communities to enact positive change. All teams created visual presentations of their journeys throughout the season and presented them at our end of season tournament and showcase, Jamboree.

HeadlineProviding a Summer Full of Learning and Fun

For the fourth consecutive summer, we ran a Summer Learning Academy for 100 elementary school students in partnership with the Boston Public School system and Boston After School and Beyond. This free summer camp provided students with 75 hours of engaging hands-on English and STEM classroom activities lead by BPS teachers, complemented by 75 hours of soccer and enrichment activities like arts and crafts, cooking and technology classes lead by Scores coaches. With the help of its numerous partners, Boston Scores was able to provide unique experiences to our students such as a soccer clinic at Gillette Stadium, a soccer clinic led by Liverpool FC, field trips to the Museum of Science, the New England Aquarium, and a visit to Revere Beach to explore the sand sculptures.

In 2009, 3rd grader Anissa B. enrolled in the Boston Scores elementary school program. Each year over the following 10 years, Anissa’s coach-mentors supported her on and off the field as she developed her soccer and leadership skills eventually earning a spot on the Varsity soccer team and being voted as Captain of her team. Anissa credits Boston Scores for being instrumental in building her confidence and supporting her aspirations to graduate from high school and enroll in college. Today, Anissa is a freshman at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams and a member of their soccer team!

2019 was a special year for Boston Scores as we celebrated 20 years of serving Boston youth. When Boston Scores started in 1999, we served 175 students in 6 schools. Today, Boston Scores serves students from over 40 Boston Public Schools. This growth has transformed Boston Scores from a budding start-up to one of the largest after school providers in Boston. At this year’s Celebration event, we presented the New England Revolution with our “Community Partnership Award” and heard from Rahn Dorsey, former Boston Chief of Education, about the importance of school-community partnerships and developing education and career pathways for disconnected youth.

Our coach-mentors are the biggest asset of our program. This year, Senior High School Program Manager Ethan Goldman was named one of the Positive Coaching Alliance’s 2019 Double-Goal Coach Award winners. This prestigious national honor recognizes the 50 most impactful youth sports coaches in the United States each year. Receiving this award exemplifies the high quality of support that our coaches provide to our students.

In 2019, we partnered with a record of 13 middle schools. This was also the first year we implemented One Hen as a year-long program. With the additional time, teams were able to work on their businesses with greater passion and commitment than ever before. In total, our middle school teams donated to 15 charities, ranging from environmental justice and hunger to medical research.
