Greetings from Liverpool! Hope everyone is staying well and safe during this pandemic. I have had a lot of time to watch nature in Pfoutz Valley change from the brown of winter to the light green of spring. I hope it’s a sign of the earth healing, and I hope that everyone is taking this time to reflect on what is really important. Do we really need all the commercial activities out- side the home? I’m sorry for all the seniors in high school and college who have had their senior year cancelled. Congratulations to all of our “Barner kids” who will receive their diplomas without ceremonies. You have done a great job! With a heavy heart and much discussion with the officers, I am suspending the reunion this year. I HATE to do this. In our history this was done before during the world wars. I believe that everyone needs to stay safe. I want to see all your smiling faces next year! It would be wonderful to fill the church for the next reunion. Please put up photos, stories and remembrances on the Adam Barner Family of PA Face- book page. We can use this to stay connected. 97th Annual Barner Reunion

At Barner’s Church

Liverpool, PA

Saturday, June 19, 2021

Hope to see you all there!!

Do we really need all the commercial activities out-side the home? I’m sorry for all the seniors in high school and college who have had their senior year cancelled. Congratulations to all of our “Barner kids” who will receive their diplomas without ceremonies. You have done a great job!

With a heavy heart and much discussion with the officers, I am suspending the reunion this year. I HATE to do this. In our history this was done before during the world wars. I believe that everyone needs to stay safe. I want to see all your smiling faces next year! It would be wonderful to fill the church for the next reunion.

Please put up photos, stories and remembrances on the Adam Barner Family of PA Face-book page. We can use this to stay connected. And don’t forget to check out the Adam Barner website ( www.adambarner.family ). I would like to thank Charlie and Wayne A. Barner for all their work on these sites. They took the work of the previous webmaster, Wayne D. Barner, to make this site for our use. We need to keep feeding them infor-mation and photos. Photos with names are a wonderful thing in our history.

A big “Thank You!” to Wayne D. Barner, who took Bill Barner’s and Leroy Barner’s in-formation and charts and translated them into something we can all understand.

Once again, please know that it’s with a very heavy heart that I am suspending the reun-ion. Please stay safe and healthy so we can gather at the church next year on June 19, 2021.

Respectfully,

Beth Sowers

Minutes of the Barner Reunion—2019

The 96th annual Barner Reunion was held on June 15, 2019, at the St. John's (Barner's) Lutheran Church in rural Liverpool, PA. It was a cool day with partly sunny skies and a gentle breeze. There were 24 attendees, some local and some from farther afield. Although some familiar faces were missing, we had several new attendees this year. Everyone is welcome, and we are always pleased to meet new attendees!

The business meeting was held in the church. President Beth Sowers presided. The minutes and treasurer's reports were accepted as printed in the newsletter. An election was held. Dave Barner was re-elected to the executive committee, and Bruce Barner will also serve on this committee. Both terms will expire in 2021.

There was a motion to donate $100 to St. John’s Lutheran (Barner’s) Church in appreciation for their hospitality. The motion carried unanimously.

Beth Sowers reported on the activities of Barner’s Church in the last year. They have continued to be active in raising funds for local causes. This is done through various activities, such as the making of candy Easter eggs and the annual Apple Butter Boil. The new pastor, J Bohn, and his wife were present at the church.

The history committee report was presented by Charlie Barner, who offered an online tour of the family website at http://www.adambarner.family. The website is interactive and has many features to make browsing among family records a deeply interesting experience. Additions and corrections may be submitted directly on the website for review by the webmaster. Many thanks go to Charlie, who maintains the website, and his father, Wayne A. Barner who maintains the family genealogical records. We also have a family Facebook page, Adam Barner Family of PA.

All in attendance introduced themselves and shared some thoughts. A cash offering was taken. It amounted to $205. A picture was taken of the group before adjourning.

A luncheon was served by the ladies of the church. This is a highlight each year and features homemade soups and pies, with barbecue sandwiches and hot dogs. The meal was further enhanced by conversation, laughter and good fellowship.

The group gathered at the cemetery and the wreath was placed at the Adam Barner memorial by Wayne A. Barner. Rev. Jay Bohn, pastor of Barner’s Church, offered a prayer.

Respectfully submitted, Eunice L. Barner NOTE: If you see corrections that are needed, please notify Eunice (see contact information on page 1).

Greetings from Barner’s Church!

We invite you to join us on Sundays at 9:00 AM for worship. For more information on what is happening at Barner’s Church, check out our website at www.barnerschurch.com or call us at 717-444-3834. We hope that you will join us as we continue God’s work.

Apple Butter Boiling

Each fall an Apple Butter Boil is held at Barner’s Church.

The apple butter is boiled in antique copper kettles and sold on the grounds. A Dutch pot pie dinner is served in the Parish House from noon until 5 PM. The dinner includes chicken or beef pot pie, corn, pepper slaw, bread and apple butter. The dinner is served family style and is all-you-can-eat. Your choice of pie or ice cream is included in the price.

For those who prefer the lighter side, there is a food stand in the grove that serves chicken corn soup, ham bean soup, barbe-cue sandwiches, hot dogs, homemade ice cream and pie.

The craft tent features the members’ many talents, and you can find anything from homemade baked goods to stained-glass ornaments.

BARNER’S CHURCH HAPPENINGS

We had a great day for the Apple Butter Boil last fall. The money raised is used to help out in many areas of the community throughout the year.

We started making Easter Eggs, but had to shut down our project early due to COVID-19. The money from this project helps three pro-grams in Perry County.

On March 27 we welcomed a new pastor. Pastor George Scott has been leading services via Facebook.

Hopefully we will be able to hold our annual Apple Butter Boil this fall. I will put any information on the Adam Barner Family Facebook page.

Barner’s Church was once known as Dupp’s Church. It dates back to 1794 but may have had congregational organization as early as 1786. It was of the Reformed faith with union arrangements with the Mennonites. The earliest church structure was reportedly on the site of the present-day Adam Barner Monument. The Church in this 1990 photo was built in 1872. In 1927, the congregation became Lutheran and the church is officially known as St. John’s Lutheran Church, but it is still widely known as Barner’s Church. Land for the church and cemetery was given by Adam Barner’s son, George. It was re-deeded in 1926 to the Lutheran Church by Mary F. Wilt, granddaughter of George. It is about 2 miles north of Liverpool.
