March 19 - First Day of Spring!
Burger Junior High School
2020 Newsletter
March always feels like the light at the end of the long winter tunnel. Winter is almost over and spring is on the way. I think we are all happy to see the change of seasons. It will be a busy month for us at Burger, too. The Parent Group is sponsoring the second annual Roller Skating Party on March 13, from 7 - 9 p.m. It was a big success last year, and we hope even more students come out for it this year. Tickets to skate are $5 and will need to be purchased in school prior to the event. Because the event is in the gymnasium, we will have to cap the number of tickets sold.
On March 24 - 26, our students in grades 7 and 8 will take the New York State English Language Arts Assessments. In recent years, some parents have made the decision to have their students refuse to take the NYS assessments. However, with each passing year, fewer and fewer parents are taking this route. This is my plea - to please have your students sit for the NYS assessments this year. It is expected that all students who attend public schools take the exams. The exam data is not used to evaluate teachers or schools; what the data does do for us is let us know if our students are growing academically and if our curriculum and pedagogy is helping all students learn. Assessments are an important part of our students’ lives and will become essential to them once they take Earth Science and other courses required for high school graduation. This year opt-in for the NYS assessments.
Again, this year students at Burger will be participating in Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for the ELA assessment only. Like it or not, Computer-Based Testing will be an important part of our students’ educational program in the future. Many of the NYS Regents exams have already gone to the CBT model and the ACT and SAT tests have also gone to computer-based models as well. This will be the wave of the future for students in the 21st century, so we are happy to support their success in this area.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Shrek Jr. The show was a rousing success. Never have I seen a group of students enjoy working together so much as the group did this year. As an educator, it always feels good to see our students love what they do and shine while they do it!
If you should have any questions about the upcoming NYS assessments or anything else related to Burger, please don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you for your support.
Take care,
Greg Lane Principal
