and now is the time for the final exam. Like the academic class‐room, some have had good fortunealong the way getting here; othershave overcome adversity. Even today, a good bounce or a bad bounce will occur.

Your athletic skills are put to the test, but moreimportantly, your discipline will be challenged aswell. To wait for the exact moment, use the righttouch, make the right cut.

Discipline also means testing your people skills. To embrace our diverse opponents as equals, and toemploy common decency – every – single – moment.Win or lose.

That’s the beauty of educational athletics. The takeaways today are not the trophies and medals, but the life lessons learned and applied.

Good luck to all!

PANTHERS POUNCE ON D3 TITLE

River Rouge wasn’t intimidated by Muskegon’s national acclaim or 859 football victories, the most by any Michigan high school. If anything, the chance to knock off the unbeaten and top-ranked Big Reds brought out the absolute best in the Panthers.

After spotting Muskegon a 7-0 lead, Rouge scored the final 30 points to claim a 30-7 victory in the 2019 Division 3 champi-onship game at Ford Field in Detroit.

“We are known for basketball, but now we have a football title,” said 10th-year Rouge coach Corey Parker, who lauded his team for playing fearlessly on both sides of the ball. “Now we have a football title, and 20 years from now these guys are going to be talking about it.”

All the talk coming into the game cen-tered on Muskegon senior quarterback Cameron Martinez, the two-time MLive Player of the Year who had rushed for more than 2,000 yards. But the talk after-ward was about a different QB – River Rouge’s Mareyohn Hrabowski.

Hrabowski, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound junior, answered an early score by Martinez with three rushing touchdowns of his own, finishing with 15 carries for 175 yards – an average of nearly 12 yards per carry. He also completed 6-of-12 passes for 45 yards.

“I just had to follow my blocks,” said Hrabowski. “I had faith in myself and my team, and we came out on top.”

It was the first Finals appearance and championship for Rouge, which has quali-fied for the playoffs all 10 years under Parker. Rouge lost its opener this fall to Friday’s Division 4 champion Grand Rapids Catholic Central before reeling off 13 straight wins. The Panthers were ranked No. 5 in Division 3 entering the playoffs

The other storyline Saturday was the Rouge defense, which held a Muskegon team averaging 49 points per game to a season-low seven.

The Panthers did it with an ultra-aggressive strategy, sometimes with all 11 defensive players within three yards of the line of scrimmage just daring Martinez to throw the ball.

Instead, Muskegon kept trying to find a way to break Martinez through the initial wall and into the clear, but it never hap-pened.

Martinez, a 5-11, 190-pound senior fin-ished with 108 rushing yards, but it took him 34 carries to get there – at 3.2 yards per carry. He also did not complete a single

pass, going 0-for-5 through the air. “We just didn’t play our game, really,”

said Martinez, who faced relentless pres-sure every time he dropped back to throw. “We have played great for 13 weeks, and we picked a bad time to play bad.”

Hrabowski scored on runs of one and 40 yards in the second quarter, as the Panthers took a 14-7 lead into halftime.

Rouge (13-1) kept its foot on the accel-erator during the second half, with Rmontaye Caldwell returning the third-quarter kickoff 36 yards to the Muskegon 35-yard line. On the next play, Hrabowski went 35 yards on a keeper and the lead was 21-7.

The score remained the same until the fourth quarter, when Rouge rounded out the scoring on a 31-yard field goal by Avery Burch and a 33-yard run by Deandre Bulley.

Bulley, a 6-2, 245-pound senior, came into the game needing just 80 yards to reach 2,000 for the season. He came up five yards short, with 15 carries for 75

yards, but Hrabowski more than made up the difference.

Rouge used extremely wide splits on the offensive line to open up running lanes for Hrabowski, who stunned the stingy Big Reds’ defense with his vision and decep-tive speed in the open field. On two of his scoring runs he faked a jet sweep handoff and ran straight ahead behind guard Deshawn Smith and tackle Chance Moore through the left side of the line and eventu-ally into the end zone.

The Panthers held a 330-180 edge in total yards, including a 45-0 edge passing. Rouge outrushed Muskegon 285-180.

Darieon Jones, a 5-8, 190-pound senior defensive back, was everywhere for Rouge, registering a game-high 14 tackles, including 10 solos. Linebacker Deshawn Walker had eight tackles, and Tyron Jones and Chastin Cross each made six stops.

Muskegon was led by senior linebacker Tarran Walker and senior safety Tyreese Oakes with nine tackles apiece.

Soph leads GRCC in D4 Final

Joey Silveri and his Grand Rapids Catholic Central teammateswanted to prove they had the talent to match up with Detroit

Country Day. It turns out, the Cougars had the talent to overwhelm the top-

ranked football team in Division 4 as they cruised to a 44-0 victory in the 2019 Division 4 Final at Ford Field.

“Every week we get people telling us, ‘You guys are a good team, but we don’t really know how,’” the Catholic Central sophomore quar-terback said. “’You guys don’t really have that good of players.’ To come out here against a great team like Country Day and prove

everybody wrong is amazing.” The win gave Catholic Central

its fifth title and third in four years. In 2016 the Cougars also defeated Country Day. That one ended 10-7 – but this time, the result wasn’t indoubt by early in the second half.

“I can’t say that I saw 44-0 com-ing,” said Catholic Central coach Todd Kolster, who now has four titles to his credit. “I felt really good about our team. I felt really good about what we were doing. I felt really good about the character of the guys on our team. So, I felt like we could go out and get this.”

Silveri was the driving force, as he ran or threw for six total touch-

downs, raising his season combined total to 54. He was 15-of-22 passing for 236 yards and rushed 18 times for 143 yards. The Cougars didn’t run a play that didn’t feature a Silveri run or throw until three plays into the third quarter. He either ran or threw on 39 of the Cougars’ first 40 plays.

“He’s a special kid – he's a special young man,” Kolster said. “I’m just really happy for him. I’m happy for our seniors. Joey has come in, and he’s adapted so well to our upperclassmen. They have so much respect for him because he’s such a hard worker. He’s a great character guy. He showed tonight why he is such a good player.”

Silveri was involved in three touchdowns in the first quarter, throwing a pair to Jace Williams (15 and 14 yards) and running for a 53-yard score. The 18 points were six more than Country Day hadallowed in a game all season, as the Yellowjackets had cruised intothe Finals at 13-0 and allowing 5.2 points per game.

“We saw a lot of one-on-one matchups and a lot of pressure coming,” Silveri said. “So, we knew if we got the ball out quick and gave our receivers a chance one-on-one, they would make plays.”

Williams certainly proved that point, as he tied a Finals record with three touchdown catches. He finished the night with four catch-es for 62 yards, adding a 23-yard touchdown reception to his two in the first quarter.

“I feel like it set a tone for our offense and defense,” Williams said. “And our special teams were doing a good job today, too.”

Silveri also had a 23-yard touchdown pass to Drew Gommesen to give his team a 24-0 halftime lead, and his second touchdown run came from one yard out midway through the third quarter.

Not long after that run, the Cougars’ defense got in on the scor-ing, as Jake Passinault intercepted an attempted double pass and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown to make it 38-0.

lansing catholic takes d5 Zach Gillespie was just part of what was out of rhythm

for Lansing Catholic during the first half of the 2019Division 5 Final against Almont.

The senior quarterback headed into the break 2-of-6passing for 16 yards with an interception, and had eight car-ries for nine yards – not at all characteristic for a standoutwho had thrown for nearly 2,500 yards and run for more than 550 through his first 13 games of the season.

But somehow, the Cougars and Raiders were tied. And that meant Lansing Catholic was in position to win.

Gillespie stormed back with a big second half, the offense meeting halfway a defense that had kept theCougars in the game, and the lessons of comebacks earlier this season made the difference in Lansing Catholic finish-ing a 31-17 win over Almont to earn its first Finals champi-onship since 1985.

“I probably shouldn’t say that with these guys here, but I don’t think this team is the most talented team from top tobottom that we’ve ever had,” said Cougars coach Jim Ahern, who also brought Lansing Catholic to Ford Field in2011 and 2014. “But I’ll tell ya, I don’t think I’ve had a team that has more chemistry and more heart than this group.”

They call it a “21-7 mentality” and it was born from a loss to rival Portland.

The Cougars (13-1) trailed in that Week 5 matchup 21-7 at halftime, and lightning forced the second half to beplayed the next day. Lansing Catholic came back to make the final score 21-20 – but even in defeat, the message hithome that the team can change the course of a game over the final two quarters. (And Lansing Catholic went on todefeat Portland 21-0 in the District Final.)

“We write it on the board at halftime – 21-7 mentality inthe second half – and I think that was a big turning point coming out firing that game,” Cougars senior linebackerSam Edwards said. “We’ve just carried that with us since, and it’s made us better.”

This time, as in many before, Gillespie led the way. He found his footing and touch after the break, completing 9-of-17 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns over the final two quarters and running for two scores as well.

Almont carried a 17-7 lead into the final two minutes of the third quarter. But Lansing Catholic scored 24 unan-swered points to finish the game, with Gillespie shutting the door with a four-yard scoring run with 1:39 to play.

Davison Earns 1st-Time Football Glory

Davison senior wide receiver Latrell Fordham strolled into the postgame press conference with his left arm in a sling,

and an enormous smile on his face. Fordham played a huge role in Davison’s 35-25 victory over

Brighton in the 2019 MHSAA Division 1 Final – before landing awkwardly and fracturing his left elbow late in the second quarter.

“It hurts a lot, and I need surgery, but winning a state champi-onship overrides all of that,” said Fordham, who had four catches for 88 yards before his injury, including an electrifying 74-yard sprint along the Davison sideline that helped his team assume control in the second quarter.

Davison (12-2) won the first football Finals championship in school history and the first title for a Saginaw Valley League school since 1999 Saginaw High, which was led by Charles Rogers and also featured LaMarr Woodley.

The Cardinals, who had won their first four playoff games in come-from-behind fashion powered by their running game, shifted gears completely for the Final.

Davison never trailed and pulled away behind an impressive passing attack, as 6-3 junior quarterback Brendan Sullivan com-pleted 14-of-19 passes for 290 yards. He connected with six receivers.

Sullivan opened the scoring on a one-yard plunge in the first quarter set up by a crucial two-yard, fourth-down completion to Fordham and a 14-yard pass to Harrison Terry on the next play. Terry led all receivers with six catches for 94 yards.

After a Brighton field goal narrowed the lead to 7-3 in the sec-ond quarter, second-year Davison coach Jake Weingartz seized on an opportunity to go for a home run.

“We had trips (three receivers) to one side and Latrell by him-self on the other side,” explained Weingartz. “He had single cover-age and the safety shaded to the trips side. We had to take a shot.”

Fordham took off on a straight go route along the Davison side-line and Sullivan delivered a strike, which Fordham caught in stride and sprinted the rest of the way for a 74-yard score and 14-3 lead.

That play brought the huge crowd from Davison to its feet and seemingly opened the floodgates. The Cardinals scored on a one-

yard run by Carter Cryderman before halftime and a 10-yard scramble run by Sullivan early in the third quarter to take a seem-ingly comfortable 28-3 lead.

Brighton (11-3) showed no quit, however, led by dual-threat senior quarterback Colby Newburg and junior running back Nicholas Nemecek.

The Bulldogs scored 16 points in a row – on a one-yard run by Nemecek and a 27-yard pass from Newburg to Nemecek (along with a pair of 2-point conversions) – to close to within 28-19 with four minutes remaining.

With Brighton back within striking distance, Sullivan took his turn in the quarterback shootout.

He connected with senior Caleb Smith on a 63-yard pass down to the 1-yard line, which Cryderman took in on the next play to push the lead back to 35-19.

Monroe SMCC Wins Championship Grind If Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central could draw up the perfect

game for its preferred style of play, it might look a lot like the 2019 Division 6 Final.

Yes, the Falcons defeated Maple City Glen Lake to win their first championship since 2014, so that makes it memorable no matter what. And sure, SMCC would’ve loved to score more – the offense averaged 34 points per game heading into the night.

But look past all of that and consider: The Falcons had 63 plays to Glen Lake’s 32, and ran the ball 58 times. They had 22 first downs to Glen Lake’s six. They had the ball nearly twice as long – 31:17 to 16:43 – and didn’t have one penalty called against them. And the defense posted its first shutout of the season.

Offensive efficiency and defensive prowess have been hall-marks of a program that was playing in its eighth MHSAA Final – and the victory was proof again that the workmanlike approach remains a viable a championship approach during an era dominat-ed by wide-open and fast-paced attacks.

“It’s not really the score that we anticipated, but it’s OK – we’re a grinding team, we have faith in our defense and our offense to eat up time on the clock,” SMCC senior quarterback Wyatt Bergmoser said.

The Falcons finished 12-1, their only defeat this season 28-21 to Division 4 Milan in Week 3.

MHSAA Finals

SMCC punted only twice and converted on four of five fourth-down tries, including two during a 14-play, 55-yard fourth-quarterpossession that didn’t result in a score but did drain 7:48 off the clock. That possession also left Glen Lake to try to tie beginning at its own 7-yard line with 2:27 to play.

The game’s lone score came on a Bergmoser six-yard touch-down run just under five minutes into the second quarter, which capped a 10-play, 94-yard drive lasting 5:22.

The Falcons ran for 249 yards total, led by senior Alex Morgan’s 123 on 22 carries. They held Glen Lake (12-2) to 127 yards total, 75 of it coming through the air on passes by senior quarterback Reece Hazelton. The Lakers got no deeper into SMCC territory than the 36-yard line.

Sailor QB IS King in D2 2019 Finals Review

Brady Rose walked into Ford Field carrying thebackup quarterback tag.

After a performance that showed he was a backup in name only, the Muskegon Mona Shores junior walked out with the 2019 Division 2 Football championship.

Rose (right), who was starting in place of injured all-stater Caden Broersma, accounted for 212 total yards and four touchdowns as he led the Sailors to their first Finals title with a 35-26 win over Detroit Martin Luther King.

“He looked like an athlete,” King coach Ty Spencer said when asked if Rose looked like a backup. “He looked like a very good athlete that just helped his team win a state championship.”

A year after coming up one win short of the program’s first title, Mona Shores (12-2) pulled off what most considered to be an upset against a King team that featured three Division I col-lege committed recruits and sev-eral other players who hold Division I and II offers. Not only were the Sailors without Broersma, but they had to replace nine defensive starters from a year earlier.

The Sailors not only never trailed, but were never tied after taking a 7-0 lead on their first drive. But they were certainly pushed, and responded with an 8:40 drive in the fourth quarter that put the game away.

After King’s Peny Boone scored on a 66-yard run with 10:45 remaining, the Crusaders unsuccessfully went for two to try to tie the game at 28.

Mona Shores responded with a 14-play, 72-yard drive that was capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by Rose, his third of the game. The Sailors converted two third downs and a crucial 4th-and-1 at the King 12 to keep the drive alive and essentially put the game away.

Rose was 8-of-11 passing for 122 yards and a touch-down and added 90 yards on 21 rushes.

“Coach has confidence in me being the backup quar-terback, so he just did the same thing as we would be doing if Caden was quarterback,” Rose said. “We just chipped away – 3rd-and-1, first down. 3rd-and-1, first down. We just chipped the clock away.”

reading repeats in d8 An arduous playoff road pushed Reading up against some

of the most established football programs in Michigan high school history.

Reading made its 25th playoff appearance in 2019, an impres-sive feat on its own. But by winning a second straight Division 8 championship – after the first in school history in 2018 – the

Rangers launched their program into that group of the most revered.

They concluded this chapter with a 33-6 win over Beal City, extending an incredible run while allowing a star-studded senior class to leave its personal imprint on what Reading has accom-plished.

P-W takes D7 crown It was the right time for Carter Thelen to pull out the film from sixth

grade, to remember the start of 2019’s seniors playing football together a third of their lifetimes ago.

“It was kinda emotional, because this was our last game playing with each other,” Thelen said after that final game was complete. “Just thinking back to when we kept blowing everybody out in sixth grade and seventh grade and eighth grade. Coach was saying how it was the last game for us seniors … (it was) emotionally sad, but physically it pushed me to go out and be better in practice and stay locked in.”

Every ounce of that focus and every ounce of that push was nec-essary Saturday as the Pirates faced Jackson Lumen Christi and its 35-game winning streak in the Division 7 Final at Ford Field.

The teams entered with five MHSAA Finals championship over thelast three seasons between them, and P-W emerged with the sixth over four, coming out just ahead in a physical matchup, 14-0, to claim its third Division 7 title in four years to go with those won in 2016 and 2017. Lumen Christi had won the last three Division 6 championships

before moving into Division 7 for this play-offs as one of seven undefeated teams in that 32-team field to start the postseason.

Their matchup indeed was 48 minutes of tug of war. P-W gained 119 yards, and Lumen Christi had 109 as both averaged 2.3 per play. The Pirates (14-0) were held under 35 points for just the second time this season. Lumen Christi hadn’t been shut out since a 2010 playoff loss.

P-W scored its first touchdown whensenior Aaron Bearss pulled in a pass from senior Ethan Thelen with three seconds left in the first half after a Bearss interception gave the Pirates an opportunity at the Titans’ 40-yard line with 27 seconds remaining in the half.

After nearly 22 more minutes of back-and-forth, the Pirates locked up the title on Carter Thelen’s 16-yard scoring run with 2:16 to play, as he burst through the middle of the line and shucked two Lumen Christi defenders at the 1 before gliding into the end zone.

The Titans (12-1) reached P-W territory on three of their 10 posses-sions, but only inside the 35 once – and that drive ended with a missed field-goal attempt 10 seconds into the second quarter.

“I really think we left a mark in the playoff book,” Rangers senior Hunter Midtgard said.

Senior Elijah Strine (left) ran for 73 yards and a touchdown and Midtgard added 68 yards and a score on the ground and a 40-yard touchdown reception. Senior Jayson Scoville caught an 18-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring with 3:21 left in the first quar-ter. Sophomore Matthew Stewart added a 12-yard touchdown run with 13 seconds to play.

Reading finished 13-1, winning 13 straight after a 14-0 opening loss to Pewamo-Westphalia, which won the Division 7 title.

The matchup with the Aggies (12-2) was set up to be strength on strength – especially considering the two starting quarterbacks together combined for only about 1,500 yards passing this fall.

The game stayed within a score until midway through the third quarter, when Reading began to show it was stronger in the long run.

The Rangers scored the final 19 points, all on runs, and out-gained Beal City on the ground 260-42. Reading also had 10.5 tackles for loss, with Ben Affholter leading with 4.5.

MHSAA News

Since March 12, our world has been anything but normal. These times have tested most everything in life, and as summer turned toward fall, we

found ourselves still with far more questions than answers. It has been said that an abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior.

Let me start with these abnormal times. I had many conversations with administrators over the months leading to the start of school and school sports. The one constant theme was that these are anything but normal times. Many of these conversations moved to the issue of schools start-ing the academic year virtually while considering whether or not to offer school sports opportunities this fall. Let me share the things that have been part of almost all conversa-tions on this topic.

The loudest message I heard was that kids were going to be playing sports this fall someplace. Period. Since May, that belief was proven consistently as athletic activity took place in the club, travel, AAU and non-school space nearly every day. From first-hand experience, many of these events implemented ZERO of the safety standards and pro-tocols that businesses and schools had adopted for their plans of return. The non-school world generally plowed ahead this past summer with few-to-no rules, regulations, enforcement, oversight and accountability to anyone. If kids were to be playing sports, our member schools told us that activity needs to be in the safest environment possible – which is with professional educators and trained coaches in our school sports world.

Schools were quick to point out that kids had been con-ditioning and training with school coaches in school-spon-sored workouts most of the summer. We believed that the absence of virus outbreaks among our 749 high schools’ summer activities, involving thousands of kids, was because schools were following the return-to-activity plans. Districts told us they can continue doing what they’ve been doing safely since June by following all COVID guidance and regulations that the MHSAA put in place with govern-ment’s leadership and partnership.

Schools starting the year virtually have told us they used the lessons learned from the start of sports for when students eventually returned, or will return, later this year. School administrators have shared this view privately as this has become a highly-charged topic among various groups within our school communities. Sports allow schools to bring students back to campus in small, consis-tent and defined groups with the same adults working with those students each day. In school sports, there is little mix-ing of students from one sport with those students in anoth-er – making it much easier to monitor, track and trace kids when needed than if all students were in the buildings, hall-ways and classrooms all day. We heard from administrators that valuable lessons learned with athletics in August and September could lead to a more successful school start-up with students back on campus later in the year.

All of us share the fundamental belief that we must pro-tect the health and safety of individuals first. This doesn’t include only COVID prevention measures, but also the mental health of teenage students and adults as well. In dis-tricts starting the school year online, they viewed athletics being the one shred of normalcy students, and staff mem-bers who choose to coach, would have during the fall. It’s a chance to safely interact with peers and get needed physi-cal activity that hasn’t been happening for some kids since March. Health and safety has to include all facets of the individual, and more research is being shared each day about how mental health is becoming a critical issue during these times. For many at-risk kids, sports is the one moti-vating factor to keep them in school and progressing toward graduation. Given the challenges of all online edu-cation for these at-risk kids, sports and the daily routine they bring perhaps are more important for this group of students than ever before.

With no school sports, the affluent communities and families can navigate online learning during the day and then afford the non-school athletic opportunities that kids and families in less-affluent areas simply cannot. In many communities, school sports can provide opportunities and open doors that would not appear if kids become priced-out from participating and competing.

The past several months have been the most abnormal in a century. School sports being the one pathway back to school for students in our state – the one norm for this year – run by professional educators who put kids first, can bean incredible boost to the physical and mental health of allof us. We believe that school sports can be done safely andsmartly, and the MHSAA continues to developt plans thatdo just that. We believe we must react to these abnormaltimes by thinking differently and looking at these uniquetimes through a unique lens.

Trying to find one normal for our kids in these abnormal school days might just be the best thing we can do.

— Mark Uyl, MHSAA Executive Director

Scholar-Athlete Award in 32nd Year

Awarding Scholarships to Students

Thousands of students voluntari-ly extend their classroom day by taking part in extracurricular

activities, often improving their academ-ic achievements in the process. The value that such programs play in the total education of a high school student is highlighted through the MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award, which will award $1,000 scholar-ships to 32 top student-athletes and rec-ognize over 2,000 other outstanding individuals in 2020-21.

Underwritten by Farm Bureau Insurance, the Scholar-Athlete Award is now in its 32nd year, and presents schol-arships to students in every MHSAA enrollment classification. The scholar-ships may be used at any institution of higher learning.

“It is amazing to see the number of young people who are proven achievers in academics and activities,” said Mark Uyl, executive director of the MHSAA. “At a time when our educational system is coming under fire, the Scholar-Athlete

Award is something that proves how important athletics are to the develop-ment of a well-rounded person.”

Students applying for the Scholar-Athlete Award must be graduating dur-ing the 2020-21 school year, carry a 3.5

grade-point average, and have previous-ly won a letter in a varsity sport that the MHSAA sponsors postseason competi-tion.

Applicants will also be required to show involvement in other school- com-munity activities and submit an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in edu-cational athletics.

Application materials can be found on MHSAA.com. Scan the code below to access the page.

Each MHSAA member school is allowed to nominate a number of stu-dent-athletes based on the size of the school. Class A schools can nominate six boys and six girls, Class B four boys and four girls, Class C three boys and three girls and Class D two boys and two girls. The first 30 scholarships will be awarded based on this graduated scale, with two additional scholarships intended for minority applicants.

A committee composed of school administrators from across the state will select regional and statewide winners.

Farm Bureau Insurance, a long-time supporter of MHSAA activities, also sponsors other educationally oriented programs. Chief Executive Officer Don Simon notes the company’s pleasure with the awards program.

The 32 scholarship recipients will be recognized at the MHSAA Boys Basketball Finals at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing in March.

The annual scholar-athlete ceremony is one of the highlights of the winter season. More information about the awards may beobtained by contacting your local school principal, athletic director or guidance counselor. The online application form can befound at MHSAA.com/scholarship.

Student Advisory Council Aids MHSAA

Leadership

The Student Advisory Council is a 16-member group which pro-vides feedback on issues

impacting educational athletics from a student’s perspective, and also is involved in the operation of Association championship events and other program-ming. Members of the Student Advisory Council serve for two years, beginning as juniors. Eight new members are selected annually to serve on the SAC, with nomi-nations made by MHSAA member schools. The incoming juniors join the group of eight seniors-to-be appointed a year earlier.

Selected to begin serving on the Student Advisory Council in 2020-21 are: Brinlee Barry , Caledonia; Faith Breinager, Frankenmuth; Amina Ferris, Dearborn; Nico Johnson , Britton Deerfield; Brenna Kosal, Peck; Ashton McNabb, Three Oaks River Valley; Brock Porter, Orchard Lake St. Mary's; and Melik Williams, Ypsilanti Lincoln.

Those eight new members were selected from a record-high 179 appli-cants, twice as many as generally apply for SAC positions every year.

The first Student Advisory Council was formed for the 2006-07 school year. With the addition of this class beginning this summer, members will have repre-sented 117 schools from 45 leagues plus independent schools that do not play in a league. Combined, the new appointees have participated in nine MHSAA sports, and seven will be the first SAC members from their respective schools.

The new additions to the SAC join the Class of 2021 members who were select-ed in 2019: Pierre Brooks II, Detroit Douglass; Macy Brown, Cadillac; Lydia Davenport, Ithaca; Freddy Kopplow, Traverse City St. Francis; Colin McAuliffe, Salem; Avery Peters, Mason; Abbey Pheiffer , Novi; and Landen Thompson, Stevensville Lakeshore.

Student Advisory Council Belief StatementAs the voice of Michigan's student-athletes, the Student Advisory Council's role is to convey the message of how high school sports are supposed to be played. We are responsible for helping the MHSAA maintain a positive and healthy atmosphere in which interscholastic athletes can thrive.

We believe athletes should be competitive, sportsmanlike and excel academically. We believe students in the stands should have fun, but not take the focus away from the game. We believe coaches should act as teachers, helping student-athletes develop while still keeping high school sports in perspective. We believe that parents should always be positive role models and be supportive of their child's decisions. We believe officials commit their own time to high school sports and respect should always be shown and given to them.

The most important goal for student-athletes is to enjoy high school sports while keeping a high level of respect between all those involved in the games.

The Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association is the body assembled

to carry out the wishes of member schools. The Council meets several times annually to discuss and pass legislation concerning interscholastic athletics in Michigan.

The Representative Council is made up of 19 members, with all but five elected by a vote of MHSAA-member schools to repre-sent different geographic regions, different sizes of schools, nonpublic schools, and jun-ior and middle schools. Two members are elected to statewide at-large positions. Four members are appointed by the Council to facilitate representation of females and minorities, and the 19th position is occupied by the Superintendent of Public Instruction or his/her designee.

The officers and two other representa-tives form the MHSAA’s Executive Committee, which meets on a monthly basis during the school year to review eligibility appeals and other current business.

Finals Notes Your Officials Today

Just as the participants on the teams at this year’s Finals are realizing a dream of vying for top honors, another group of indi-viduals are also reaching a goal for the hard work they have put in by being assigned to officiate the action.

Officials for MHSAA Finals are selected from an Association committee of member school personnel from across the state, based on the recommendations and ratings by schools, as well as from input from local officials associations.

These officials believe that interscholastic athletics are truly educational in nature, and work to uphold that standard. Like the athletes in the Finals, officials come from all corners of Michigan.

Behind The Scenes The hallmark of a strong association is its ability to work

together for the common good. Every year, over 11,000 game

officials and 50,000-plus administrators and coaches at over 1,300 middle, junior and senior high schools voluntarily pool their efforts daily for the operations of the MHSAA’s competitive extracurricular interscholastic athletic program.

An important responsibility of membership in the Association is the operation of the hundreds of District, Regional and Final level tournaments by school administrators who serve as the site managers for these games. The behind-the-scenes work of these individuals ensures a memorable experience for the participants.

The MHSAA thanks tournament staff for the 2020 Finals – Mike Evoy, athletic director, Detroit Catholic League; Donta Favors, contest official, Detroit; James Sparks, coach, Clawson; Tye Sparks, Wolverine Lake; Tyler Smith, Oakland University, and Xavier Evoy, student, University of Detroit Jesuit High School.

Coordinating the Finals from the MHSAA office are Assistant Directors Nate Hampton, Brent Rice and Cody Inglis. Assisting with press operations are Geoff Kimmerly, Andy Frushour, Jon Ross, Paige Winne and Rob Kaminski of the MHSAA.

The MHSAA would like to recognize the efforts of these indi-viduals and the other individuals who have donated their time and talents to make the Finals a success.
