2020FOUNDATION
ANNUALREPORTThank you
1
Our sincere thanks go to Brian (TC 1945) and June Roberts, who have donated generously to help our students and programs.
I came from a small town and a one-teacher school, so going to Trinity was a big opportunity that
had a profound impact on me during a formative time of my life. I know that other students, even today, are in a similar position – coming from rural or less privileged backgrounds, so we want to be able to help them benefit from an urban education. I had originally planned to leave a gift to Trinity in my Will, but the saying goes that you should give with a warm hand, so June and I decided to offer our donation now. In this way we can directly see the impact that our gift has on Trinity and its students, which is such a nice feeling.Brian Roberts

2020 SNAPSHOT Your support is helping to create a better future. When I read through the 2020 edition of the Trinity Today magazine, I was reminded of the incredible impact our alumni have on the world, in so many ways. Thanks to your overwhelming support in 2020, these positive impacts will continue, and the next generation of Trinity students
will have the chance to grow and develop, just like those who walked
before them. Thank you again for your support, I can’t express my gratitude enough.Scott Charles (TC 1986)Executive Director of the Foundation, Deputy Warden & Director of Advancement

2020 was perhaps the toughest year the College has ever faced – we started the year with devastating bushfires in Australia, only to be thrust into a global pandemic soon after. But when we needed our supporters, you were there, helping Trinity College to weather the challenges of 2020, while no doubt dealing with your own difficult circumstances too. More than 630 people donated to Trinity, totalling $3.25 million. It’s safe to say that, without this philanthropic support, things would have been very different for the College. Many students would not have been able to continue their time at Trinity, and we certainly could not have continued to support some of the activities that make the Trinity experience so special. My sincere thanks go to you all.
Ian Solomon (TC 1989)Chairman, Executive Committee of the Foundation
Bryan (TC 1956) and Rosemary Cutter have been loyal supporters of Trinity College for more than 30 years. In particular, they have donated generously to our scholarship program, given Bryan’s time at Trinity was made possible through a scholarship. The Cutters’ donations have given many deserving young people, including Indigenous students, the chance to join Trinity when they otherwise would not have had the opportunity to do so.

THIS IS HOW YOU HELPYour donations meant our choir got to tour Canada and the US in January and February and they were able to release the album Walking on Waves.
7
We aim to help deserving students from all backgrounds to imagine and achieve a better world.
THANKS TO YOU, THEY DO.
Your donations gave Trinity a much-needed boost during the pandemic, so we could continue to support our students with activities and events that helped our community stay connected.
8
Your donations gave many talented young people the opportunity to join our community through a range of scholarships.
9
Your donations helped us create a modern, new residential building that is now home to nearly 100 students.

2020 was a tough year for Trinity, but despite its challenges, I was blown away by the strength of our community. You would think that taking the ‘residential’ out of ‘residential college’ would unravel us, but our students and staff banded together to support each other both on and off campus and carried on. The donations received by the College were greatly appreciated, as these will help us plan for the future and ensure we can continue to offer the amazing Trinity experience that so many people – me included – cherish. My time at Trinity has been incredibly rewarding so far, and will be something that I remember forever.

FUNDS’ PERFORMANCE The Trinity College Foundation received $2.4 million in donations in 2020, and earned a further $2.2 million of income from its investments. At the end of 2020, the Foundation had a total of $42.6 million in assets under management and $5.6 million on loan to the College, and its net assets were $48.5 million.
The Trinity College Foundation uses an independent investment advisor (Jana Investment Advisers Pty Ltd) to help manage its growing pool of assets. The assets of the Foundation are currently invested in a mixture of Australian and international equities, debt and liquid securities. The Foundation does not invest
directly but uses recommended fund managers, specialising in the various market segments. The weightings of the various segments determine a benchmark portfolio return against which the results of the investment managers are measured. The overall objective is to maintain the corpus of the
Foundation funds in real terms so inflation does not diminish the purchasing power of the endowed funds over time. The investment return target of the Foundation is CPI plus five per cent. As a Public Ancillary Fund, the Foundation is required to distribute at least four per cent of its net assets each year.
For 2020, the returns were as follows.

I wanted to offer a bequest to Trinity, as the College has given me so much over the years and is an institution that I hold in very high regard. I can see that my donations have a positive impact on students – bright, young people with their futures ahead of them – and I want to help even more students to benefit from the Trinity experience in years to come.Andrew Farran (TC 1957)Deputy Chair of the Governors of the Trinity College Foundation.v
Andrew Farran (TC 1957) has been involved with Trinity for many years and is Deputy Chair of the Governors of the Trinity College Foundation. We are ever thankful to Andrew for his generous donations to the College over more than 30 years, which have helped fund the Gateway Building, Indigenous programs, the Chapel, our Young Leaders Program, scholarships and the Choir of Trinity College.
