Dear Friends,

One year ago, I connected with you about the honor and privilege I felt in becoming HealthPoint’s next CEO.

Three weeks into my new role, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Much has changed since I spoke with you from the stage at our 2019 annual benefit dinner, but that feeling of immense gratitude remains the same. If anything, it’s grown stronger as I’ve witnessed the incredible resilience, bravery, and compassion of HealthPoint staff as we transform how we care for our patients, our community and each other during this time.

Predictably, the pandemic has disproportionately affected the communities HealthPoint serves. Many of our families have lost jobs, health insurance, childcare, and even loved ones. As the needs of our communities have grown, the demand for HealthPoint’s services has also increased.

The pandemic has deepened the long-standing inequities and injustices that undermine the health and well-being of our patients and communities. These inequities, rooted in systemic racism, influence access to housing, employment, fair treatment by the law, and health care.

So this spring, as COVID-19 spread and the needs of our community grew, HealthPoint found itself at a crossroads. How could we help more people without bustling waiting rooms or large community outreach events? We could either limit services, temporarily close clinics and furlough staff, or we could take bold action, grow deeper connections, and transform the way we care for our communities. I’m proud to say we chose the latter path.

To this end, our staff have been working tirelessly to re-imagine how we care for our communities. I say re-imagine rather than re-build because there’s no going back to the old way of doing things. With great disruption comes great opportunity.

This community report highlights specific areas that HealthPoint is focusing on to meet patient and community needs in response to the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.

In doing this important work, HealthPoint is both meeting the moment and building for a brighter, better future for our patients, our communities—all of us. Because as 2020 and the global pandemic have highlighted: we are all connected. And those connections are our greatest strength.

It takes a strong and connected community to solve the many challenges we face. And when we are healthy together, we can use our collective strength for care, for innovation, for hope, for change, and for justice.

But when the threat of COVID-19 emerged, HealthPoint immediately rose to meet it with some of the first testing sites in the area, treatment of patients afflicted with COVID-19 and expanded telehealth capabilities. Whether we are seeing patients in our centers, school-based clinics or out in the community treating people experiencing homelessness, we are there when people need us most.

Committed to health equity and whole person care.The summer of 2020 inspired tens of thousands of people to mobilize for racial equity. HealthPoint joined this movement as a continuation of the commitment to health equity and racial justice that we’ve held for nearly 50 years. Our doors are open to everyone. We continue to speak out against violence towards communities of color and strive to deepen our partnerships with community groups like the Marshallese Women’s Association and the Somali Health Board.

Mental health care is essential care.Behavioral health is just as important as physical health. The COVID pandemic has exacerbated issues for a population already impacted by economic inequality, food insecurity, lack of affordable housing, untreated mental illness, addiction and more. HealthPoint cares for over 12,000 people diagnosed with anxiety and depression, including post-traumatic stress disorder.

Protecting our most vulnerable.People experiencing homelessness are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 because they have higher rates of serious underlying health problems, generally lack access to quality health care, and have no way to self-quarantine. The annual count of homeless families in King County has increased 35% over the past year. Our Homeless Services team seeks out these often ignored members of our community for care and treatment.
