BRANDING, ATTRIBUTION, AND PUBLICITY GUIDELINES The U.S. Department of State branding and signage requirements must be followed for all events, remarks, program documentation, online websites, and social media posts related to the Mandela Washington Fellowship. In order to maintain consistent messaging about the Mandela Washington Fellowship and ensure U.S. Department of State equities are reflected in Fellowship communications, the partners involved in its implementation should adhere to the guidelines below. BRANDING Fellowship participants and partners may only use the Fellowship logo in connection with official program activities. When using the Fellowship logo, it must be used with the U.S. flag, U.S. Department of State seal, and IREX logo as deemed appropriate for the activity. Please review this chart for examples of situations where logo usage may or may not be permitted:

Logo Usage Permitted Logo Usage Not Permitted • Events highlighting the Fellowship and/or

Fellows during the Professional Development Experience, such as a final presentation or luncheon

• Activities funded by the Fellowship, such as an official Alumni Activity or event during a Reciprocal Exchange

• Videos not produced or authorized by the Fellowship

• Posters, flyers, or other printed materials not produced or authorized by the Fellowship

• Activities organized by Fellows and/or Alumni that are not funded or authorized by the Fellowship

Please contact the Mandela Washington Fellowship team directly with any questions about this policy and to obtain copies of the logos and the Fellowship’s style guide. When using the logo for a permitted purpose, it is extremely important that all provided logo guidelines are adhered to and that the logo not be distorted, discolored, cropped, or otherwise misrepresented. Logo files should not be modified in any way, though proportional resizing is encouraged as needed. Please note that you may see the U.S. Department of State, IREX, or other parties administering the Fellowship and YALI use the YALI circle portion of the logo from time to time. Fellows, Awardees, and partners should not alter or crop the Mandela Washington Fellowship logo without written permission from the U.S. Department of State. Fellows and other partners may not use the IREX logo without written permission from IREX. The U.S. flag, the U.S. Department of State Seal, and the IREX logo may be used on materials that officially support the Fellowship. When used, the flag and Seal may not be altered and must follow the branding guidance found at eca.state.gov/comms-guidance. Similarly, the IREX logo may not be altered and must follow the branding guidance found at www.irex.org/logos.

ATTRIBUTION Mandela Washington Fellowship participants and partners must use correct attribution on all published works. The Fellowship welcomes partners and participants to share information about the program and their experiences. Authors should take care to avoid any impression or implication that the U.S. government, IREX, or any agency representing it has endorsed the conclusions or approved the contents of the publication. PUBLICITY After selection for the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Fellows have the option to sign a participant media release as a part of their acceptance of the Fellowship. Fellows may contact IREX if they have questions about this release and its terms. Please note that the media release only covers activities organized and authorized by the U.S. Department of State, IREX, Institute Partners, and other official affiliated partners of the Fellowship. In the event that a Fellow is interviewed by an external party, such as a local news station or other organization, they would not be covered by the Fellowship media release and would need to have the Fellow(s) sign a separate release. There is no special permission needed for partners or Fellowship participants to engage with the media. As a best practice, Fellowship participants and partners should not photograph, film, record, or speak on behalf of another participant or individual without their permission, particularly if such photographs, recordings, or statements may be released to the press, on social media, or otherwise made publicly accessible. If a participant or partner shares any photographs, videos, statements, or other recordings publicly or with the press, it must be done with the understanding that they are releasing such items and/or statements as individuals or organizations and not on behalf of the Fellowship, the U.S. Department of State, and/or IREX. Please respect the privacy of Fellow participants and partners and seek their permission before publicly posting any photos or giving any statements that include or identify other Fellows. Please email IREX at [email protected] with any questions on logo usage or attribution. Additional guidelines related to communications and branding can be found on the U.S. Department of State website at eca.state.gov/comms-guidance. The U.S. flag and U.S. Department of State Seal are also available for download from this site.

Visual Content

We encourage you to collect, share, and post engaging photos that showcase the highlights of your experience. We use photos that you share with us on the Mandela Washington Fellowship social media accounts, as well as in reports, articles, and more. TYPES OF PHOTOS

Group Photos: Group photos are always a good conclusion to an event or site visit. Try to keep group photos fun, interactive, and interesting! (Pictured here: 2019 UC Davis Fellows at Lake Tahoe)

Individual Photos: Individual photos of Fellows can also be useful for social media and communications purposes. (Pictured here: Grace Jerry in class at The Presidential Precinct)

Candid Photos: When capturing moments from your experience, try to think beyond the typical “group shot.” Capture Fellows engaging with one another, participating in academic sessions or leadership trainings, doing volunteer work, or exploring the community. (Pictured here: University of Delaware Fellows conduct a site visit to a charter school)

PHOTO TIPS • Always shoot at the highest quality setting. For quality printing, an image has to be at least 300

bpi (bits per inch). Take photos in the highest resolution your camera allows. • Hold the camera steady. When pressing the button, squeeze the whole camera slowly and focus

on not jerking the button quickly. Keep your arms close to your body and your elbows locked. • Look for well-lit locations. Use a flash in dark places. The best outdoor lighting is overcast skies.

Page 12: 2020 Comms Guidelines RE FINAL - home - Mandela Washington … · 2020-02-05 · AWARDEES Communications Guide . Communications Guide for Reciprocal Exchange Awardees Page 2 ... an

Communications Guide for Reciprocal Exchange Awardees Page 12

• Plan your photos ahead of time. Study the photo shoot environment beforehand and rearrange whatever you can in the background to tell a better story.

• Include details for context. This may be a backdrop that gives an idea of where a person is, or any detail/prop that helps the viewer understand what’s happening in the image.

• Get close to the subject. Get close enough to fill the frame with the subject. The best distance is about six feet away.

• Look for action. If people are caught in a photo without a sign of action, it looks like they’re not doing anything. For example, when photographing speakers or panels, wait for someone to gesture or speak.

• Candid shots are better than posed photos. Posed photos all look the same and fail to convey a sense of relationships between people.

• Avoid photographing the backs of people’s heads. Sometimes it can be difficult to shoot a group sitting together, try to get closer or higher to avoid this. The only time this is preferable is for groups of children.

• Use a flash for face shots. Even when it’s sunny out, this ensures the face is properly lit for the photo.

• Be creative. Look for interesting angles, creative lighting, and varying perspectives. • Take lots of photos. Take several images in succession. You can always delete unwanted images

later.
