Breakout Session #3G - 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Homeless: What We Know So Far Jim Wheeler, MPA According to the latest national estimate by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), 567,715 persons experienced homelessness on a single night in 2019, an increase of 14,885 people since 2018. While the rest of the country experienced a combined decrease in homelessness in 2019, significant increases in unsheltered and chronic homelessness on the West Coast, particularly California, offset those nationwide decreases. Homelessness in California increased by 21,306 people, or 16.4 percent, which is more than the total national increase of every other state combined. It is evident that California and other states on the West Coast are experiencing a homelessness at a crisis level. In fact, over 30 percent of all unsheltered homeless nationwide are currently in the state of California. Clearly this issue needs to be addressed by local and state leaders with crisis-like urgency. Addressing these challenges will require a broader, community-wide response that engages every level of government to compassionately house our fellow citizens who call the streets their “home." In this presentation we will examine the causes of our current homeless crisis; evaluate the data asking the question, “what does it tell us about people experiencing homelessness?” And finally, we will seek to identify realistic solutions. Learning Objectives:

1. Examine the causes of our current homeless crisis 2. Evaluate the data: What does it tell us about people experiencing homelessness 3. Identify realistic solutions
