Hope and Gratitude As I sit down to write this article and reflect back on 2020, I am still filled with many emotions. The initial fear and uncertainty that we all experienced eventually gave way to hope and gratitude. We found in ourselves a resilience that we may not have known existed. We looked to each other for support and encouragement. It is that support that I would like to focus on at this time.

The definition of support is to bear all or part of the weight of; hold up. At SVWC, we not only supported one another but we continued to support the local community as well. SVWC was able to support the Winchester Area Temporary Thermal Shelter program (WATTS) by providing the linens for their entire season and a financial donation to ensure the linens could be laundered on a weekly basis. Residents donated excess dining dollars to support local non-profits such as Bright Futures, Kids Club, Highland Food Pantry, and the Freemont Street Nursery. We also collected food for C-CAP during November and December and we supported our four-legged friends with donations of food and cleaning supplies for the local animal shelters.

Residents supported one another with mask making, hallway sing-alongs, driveway happy hours, scavenger hunts, and geocaching. They also grew vegetables in their gardens and pails to help supplement our Dining Services Department. Notes and cards of encouragement flowed throughout the buildings.

Staff organized parades for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, created musical collaborations, played virtual bingo,

delivered thousands of meals to our residents, and worked different shifts to ensure that our residents’ needs were met.

Our staff once again gave generously

“Your gift to not only give us linens but

provide funds to have our linen cleaned has been a huge

blessing.”Winchester Area

Temporary Thermal Shelter

during our annual employee gift campaign, because caring for one another is what we do at SVWC. The Employee Talent Show telethon was a huge success and raised a record amount of funds for the Employee Emergency Fund. A big thanks to our performers and those who donated!

We all learned to Zoom and the phrase “you are on mute” could be heard through the hallways. COVID testing, unfortunately, became a way of life for all the staff especially those who worked in the regulated areas of the campus.

Despite the COVID pandemic, there was still a business to run. SVWC moved ahead with plans for the Villa project. Drawings were completed and SVWC rounded out our construction team by partnering with Warfel Construction and HG Design Studio. Marketing proved to be a challenge since visitors were not allowed on campus, but our consultant Spectrum Marketing did an amazing job by creating beautiful renderings and interactive floor plans. SVWC also launched a new website to help with our marketing efforts.

SVWC also had the support of LeadingAge Virginia and other communities around the state. Information, policies, best practices, and lessons learned were shared daily. This was truly a blessing in many ways.

It is this support of one another that I will remember and cherish when I look back on everything that we overcame in 2020.

Year End Review SVWCAs we all would agree, this has been an unusual year for many reasons, essentially all related to COVID. It cannot be said enough, the commitment the staff and residents made is truly unbelievable and admirable.

From the Board perspective, the impact of Zoom meetings for all committees, board and executive committee meetings, although efficient, left me with a detached feeling. However, it did allow me in my attendance at every committee meeting, a far greater appreciation of the complexity of SVWC.

The Corporate Board and SVWC leadership advanced two essential initiatives, which may not have been conspicuous in the day-to-day activity of Westminster Canterbury.

The first initiative was the Villas project, a campus expansion that includes new independent living with one and two bedroom residences. Given the scope and cost of the Villas project, the adherence to a very deliberate, organized and disciplined process for decision-making was necessary. This was accomplished, primarily due to Mike Matthews, our project manager who continues leading us to successfully complete the Villas project.

Secondly, was the implementation of a staff compensation strategy to enhance hiring and retention while providing laser focus on

improving financial performance and service quality. It is my sincere hope over the next two or three years we will see the benefit of those actions.

Additionally, I was regularly impressed to see in each committee and on the board, a level of thoughtful participation and personalized engagement that makes our community and campus special.

As, I have said many times, as many times as people would let me say it, so much of what Westminster Canterbury is and will be is the personalization the residents bring to our campus. This was no different during the difficult times of the COVID lockdown, when plants and vegetables adorned porches to grow fresh vegetables for the kitchen to use, exemplifying making the best of a difficult situation.

I appreciate the opportunity to serve on the board and as chair. It was my honor to make whatever contribution I might have made to our wonderful community.

‘A Standard of Excellence’ together.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart,

Bill Pifer, SVWC Board Chair 2020

Year End Review FOUNDATIONIt has been my pleasure to serve as the Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury Foundation Board Chairman for the past several years. I look forward to the next year continuing in this role. It is an honor.

Over the last year, I have experienced the hard work of a dedicated staff committed to serving others, the resilience and generosity of residents and commitment to the institution by both the Corporate and Foundation Boards of Trustees.

In addition to the complications of dealing with the pandemic, Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury continued to operate at the highest level and developed plans for a vibrant future. Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury is such a valuable asset to our greater community. Our impact is far reaching.

I take this moment to thank all for pulling together helping others, caring and sharing. Your support of the Fellowship Fund and Employee Emergency Fund are sincerely appreciated. You ensured that we were in a position to help those in need. I am humbled by your support. You made a difference!

We also had some fun. The very successful auction was great. Many of you donated items and made purchases. Once again, funds raised to help others.

As we move forward, the Foundation will remain focused on promoting our cause and brand expanding our message of philanthropy and outreach throughout the community. We have a great story and you are the most important part of it.

Harry Smith, Foundation Chair

Employee Emergency Fund and Fellowship FundWith hardships, comes kindness. Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury experienced both in 2020, as most did while navigating through the coronavirus pandemic. Kindness through support of the Employee Emergency Fund and Fellowship Fund eased the hardships that people endured and reminded the SVWC family that social distancing does not mean that they are on their own.

The Employee Emergency Fund had a record year in 2020 with residents and employees ensuring that when a crisis occurs an employee has a place to turn. The Virtual Talent Show sponsored by the residents provided over $8,000 for the Employee Emergency Fund. And, the Employee Giving Campaign and Annual Appeal had many donations to benefit this fund. Often the crises employees find themselves in, are a house disaster such as a fire or flood, unexpected medical illness or spouse losing his/her job. Employees apply for support and vendors receive funds directly to help quickly ease the burden of the employee. The Employee Emergency Fund distributed $12,229 to assist employees in need during 2020. As one employee says, “It is heartwarming to know that the residents care about the employees so much that they contribute to

the Employee Emergency Fund. This year was very worrisome and unpredictable, although I was fortunate enough to not need the assistance; it was reassuring to know that it was there.”

The Fellowship Fund helps residents that despite careful planning, many outliving their resources, be able to continue to live at their home at SVWC. There would be no scarier time to think about having to move into another facility then during the pandemic however at SVWC, all residents have guaranteed peace of mind due to the generous giving to the Fellowship Fund. In 2020, $205,167 was distributed for Fellowship Fund Assistance. One recipient shared appreciation and said, “Please accept my thanks for all you have done for the Fellowship Fund and SVWC, especially for making it possible for me to live here.”
