Excerpt from Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech on 13 May 2020 After the president’s speech, our lockdown level was jokingly described as Level 3.9, which was similar to Level 4, just with a few inspirational quotes added. The Western Cape also had to report to the headmaster’s office. At last, on Tuesday evening, we received some solid news from the minister of basic education, Ms Angie Motshekga. Staff are now allowed back to school from Monday, 25 May and the grade 12 learners on Monday, 1 June. We are awaiting more detail from the minister regarding private schools, but I believe we will be able to have the grades 8-11s back at the College for at least three days each before our winter break. We will still be very cautious and at this stage will not have more than two grades at school simultaneously. Since Monday an average of 24 cases per day have been reported in Gauteng. The minister referred to the fact that not all learners will be allowed on the school premises simultaneously while our country is battling the virus. Consequently, we will continue to run an online system parallel to the normal classes on days that learners are not at school. However, our main priority will be the grade 12 learners. The matrics will resume their assessment on site from their second week back at school. Our College Covid Safety Committee has already had numerous meetings and we are making sure that your children will be as safe as possible at school. More detail about our safety protocols and information regarding children with comorbidities will be communicated to you next week. During the first week, the school day will run from 08:00 to 13:30. I would like to thank all our learners, teachers and parents for the support and understanding during these challenging times. In the words of Pres. Ramaphosa: A very different South Africa and world awaits us. The greatest test will be our willingness to embrace change. Let us rise to meet this challenge. Let us stand as one family and one nation to build a new and stronger society. Hope to see you all at the College soon. In the meantime, stay positive and stay safe. School Matters FROM THE HEADMASTER’S OFFICE

Our collective struggles over the past months have taught us much

about ourselves and about each other.

We have also learnt a lot about this virus.

Although there may have been differences and disagreements,

there has also been kindness, empathy and compassion.

There has been courage and solidarity.

Excerpt from Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech on 13 May 2020

After the president’s speech, our lockdown level was jokingly described as Level 3.9, which was similar to Level 4, just with a few inspirational quotes added. The Western Cape also had to report to the headmaster’s

office. 😊 At last, on Tuesday evening, we received some solid news from the minister of basic education, Ms Angie Motshekga.
