Guide to the Catechism of the Catholic Church

Why Do We Call God Our Father? Alfred McBride, O. Praem.

Article #13

“Jesus reveals that God is Father in His very being.” Catechism, 240.

We live in a time of the absent father. It has been said that many fathers are present to their children only ten minutes a day. The

doctrine of God as Father gives us the opportunity to rebuild God’s call to human fatherhood. Jesus tells us that God is Father. “I

have made your name known” (Jn 17:6). The people of Israel had already praised God as Father and thanked Him for adopting

them as His favorite children (Ex 4:22). No human has ever seen God directly. Only the Son of God could reveal Him, because He

lived in the “bosom of the Father” (Jn 1:18). In Gethsemane, Jesus talked to God as Father, even using the affectionate and inti-

mate term, “Abba,” or papa. In the last of His seven words from the Cross, Christ called God, Father. Deep inside the mystery of

divinity, Father and Son have a reciprocal relationship. They know and love each other with absolute intimacy.

God Is Not Just “Our Parent”

Secular wisdom would have us call God “Our Parent.” Sometimes scriptural terms applied to God are just poetic comparisons bor-

rowed from the culture of the times. However, in this case, Jesus, the Son of God, says God is Father. Either we believe Him or we

don’t. The idea of God as Father is not derived from earthly fatherhood. It is just the opposite—the idea of an earthly father is

adapted from our heavenly Father. This in no way diminishes woman or motherhood. The most revered merely human being in

history is Mary, a woman and a mother. The greatest choice ever made by a mere human was the decision made by a woman/

mother to accept the divine call to conceive the Savior of the world by the Holy Spirit’s power.

What does it mean that God Is Father?

God’s fatherhood is revealed in three ways: (1) God is the divine Father of the divine Son. (2) Our Father makes us in His image;

we become images of God simply by being born. (3) Our Father shares His divine life and love with us; we become adopted sons

and daughters of God by being born again in faith and through Baptism.

The doctrine of God as Father calls us to restore the active role of human fatherhood. God the Father is creative, vital, and genera-

tive. Human families need these essential values. Our heavenly Father calls for earthly, caring fathers. Children deserve them. The

hope of families and culture depends on them.

Reflection

1. What are the three meanings of God as Father?

God is Father as the Creator of the world (Mi 2:10). He is also called Father by the People of Israel whom He

adopted as His children (Ex 4:22). Jesus reveals that God is Father in His very being

(Catechism, 238, 240).

2. Would it be better to speak of God only as Creator? God is not only the Creator. He is eternally Father in relation to His Son, who reciprocally is only Son in relation

to His Father (Catechism, 240).

3. How do the Apostles confirm Jesus as the Father’s Son?

The Apostles confess Jesus as the Word who was with God in the beginning and was God (Jn 1:1), and as the

“image of the invisible God” (Col 1:15; Catechism, 241).

Prayer

God, we rejoice to call you Father because Jesus has made this possible. As Father you created us and in Jesus made us your

adopted sons and daughters through faith and Baptism. Our humanity flourishes because of you and our share in your divine life

increases our joy. Abba, we love you.

“Obama Gives Us a Divisive LGBT Declaration,”

by Rey Flores

“Now, therefore, I, Barack Obama, President of the United

States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by

the Constitution and the laws of the United States do hereby

proclaim June 2015 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans-

gender Pride Month” - Presidential Proclamation of Lesbian,

Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month, 2015.

President Obama himself has declared it officially. We as

a nation now celebrate what was once considered unspeakable

in decent company.

From now on, June will no longer be about graduations

and Father’s Day, unless your father is like Bruce Jenner,

transforming into Caitlyn Jenner right before your very eyes.

This proclamation is so prideful, arrogant, and divisive it

couldn’t have been written from any place other than pure

hatred for the good, true, and beautiful that all men and

women have potentially in our human nature.

Obama’s words unleash demons and bring disrespect and

hatred upon the Church, which is no less than Jesus existing

among us. If there is any hope to save anything that is pure,

innocent, and good in this forsaken world, well, my friends,

that will depend on each and every single one of us.

Meanwhile, across the globe, Russian President Vladimir

Putin is awarding The Order of Parental Glory to parents

(including adoptive parents), who have raised seven or more

children. The decoration was instituted by a presidential ex-

ecutive order in May 2008, and was first awarded on January

13, 2009. Parents in that country are awarded for paying great

care to the next generation’s health and education and its

physical, spiritual and moral development.

The Parish Festival is right around the corner.

How can you help?

The Children’s Games committee would like to

open on Friday this year and continue to have

quality prizes so we are offering a Booth sponsor-

ship to help purchase prizes. Our theme will be

Castles. There are three levels of sponsorship -$100 or over –

King/Queen - $50 Prince/Princess - $25 Duke/Duchess. The spon-

sors will be acknowledged at the festival. Just put your donation

in an envelope marked children’s games – festival. Add children’s

game in the memo section of the check and drop it in the collec-

tion basket or the parish office. Since we are planning on opening

on Friday we will need lots of workers. Sign up on the sheet in the

entrance to church. This is a good way to get your

service hours needed for confirmation or a fun way to

have your family work together. Any questions con-

tact Kathy Reindl or Kathy Holtz SKEB-
