Berkeley BulletinSuperintendent News June 2020

Back in April when I wrote the May newsletter, we had had some very warm temperatures and the grass began to grow rapidly. I had mentioned that I felt confident by the end of May that the thin areas in the fairways would have healed up completely with minimal loss of grass. Unfortunately, the end of April to about the 3rd week of May, it cooled off again and slowed the progress. I am still monitoring the areas. Memorial Day weekend the grass took off again. I feel very good about what I’m seeing. I have a small concern about the right side of #10 fairway. I will keep fertilizing weekly to get these areas to heal up as much as possible. The reason I am waiting to sod is the price of grass has quadrupled. Probably by the second week of June, I will begin to make that decision.

The scalping/aerification went very well. Each year some areas are going to look rougher than others. It won.t be long before everything is back together.

Any questions, please stop and ask.

Chris Purvis

BERKELEY SENIOR CORNER

The Berkeley Senior Men’s Golf Association is a golfing organization within the Berkeley Hills Country Club open to all male members age 50 and older. Starting in 2015, a group of Berkeley Seniors formed a Board to manage a number of senior activities and look for ways to enhance the golfing opportunities for our senior members. We have representation on the Berkeley Board, Berkeley Golf Committee, the North Atlanta Senior Men’s Golf Association, Senior Tournament Director, Berkeley Senior Match Play Team Captain, Treasurer to manage the Senior Fund, Webmaster to manage the BSMGA Website and other staff to assist and advise. Membership Application forms are available in the Berkeley Pro Shop.

Back in Action: First Senior Tournament June 17.The first event Scheduled June 17 is a Stableford Points Tournament. Sign up now at the Berkeley Pro Shop. We are encour-aged by the successful competitions held at Berkeley including match play and 2-Man match play, Big Pig and now routine play by groups out on the course. None of this would be possible without the determined actions by the officers and staff at Berkeley to maintain a clean environment and support. Also credit goes to the players for following the rules, maintaining social distances and taking personal responsibility for themselves and their fellow members. Well done!

The BSMGA represents Berkeley in the North Atlanta Senior Men’s Golf Association (NASMGA). There are 17 partic-ipating country club in NASMGA (see their website at www.nasmga.com During a usual golfing calendar (8 months), eight of the clubs will host a golf tournament at their club.
