WE GATHER TOGETHER The Presbytery of Long Island of the Presbyterian Church (USA) held a Stated Meeting on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, via Zoom. The meeting was called to order with sharing The Peacemaking Project Virtual Choir “This Is My Song” and prayer lead by the Moderator, Elder Janet Allen Spencer, at 1:00 pm. A quorum was present.

WELCOME AND BEGIN OUR WORK The Rev. Scott Williams welcomed us from Christ’s First Presbyterian Church, who us celebrating their 375th Anniversary as a church. Expressed sadness that COVID prevented the Church in physically hosting the Presbytery. Roll Call – (Appendix A-pp 55-58) Approval of Docket Motion Approved: The Presbytery approved the docket Statement from Shepherding Council - Elder Janet Allen-Spencer All of us are aware of the tragic stories of George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks… We watched as our TV screens revealed the horrors of a misguided sense of privilege and authority. Yet, the week following these tragic events, the Shepherding Council met. At that meeting, the Council decided to ask the Advance Planning Committee to allow the Council to create the worship service. What we will experience today is a different kind of Presbytery meeting. Not only because it is happening on Zoom, but more importantly, because the Council believes worship and especially lamentation and repentance should dominate our time together today. So, you will experience a shorter business agenda with more worship and reflection than we usually do as a Presbytery. We are not in normal times; we are in a time where lamentation and repentance need to be our song of praise. We are in a time such as this where the Council hopes that this Presbytery may, by God’s guiding grace, gently teach ourselves as well as our sister Presbyteries a new way to confront and eviscerate racism that permeates our culture.

Stated Clerks – Rev Mark Tammen Full report (Appendix B-pp 59-60)

Presbytery Actions Motion: The Presbytery approved the minutes of the Stated Meeting held on March 31, 2020

Motion: The Presbytery adopted the 2020 Committee on Representation Report. (Appendix C – p 61)

Motion: The Presbytery received the Presbytery of Long Island’s 2019 Statistical Summary (Appendix D – p 62)

Motion: a) The Presbytery agreed to postpone the standing rule for the June 2020, presbytery meeting to approve the (current year) ministerial compensation and benefits report until June 2021, meeting at which time the report is hoped to include compensation for both years.

2020-53 Stated Meeting of the Presbytery of Long Island June 30, 2020-Zoom

Rationale: The impact of the pandemic and its response make it challenging to assess this early the churches’ ability to increase compensation. It is hoped that it will be more clear by October. In addition, the Board of Pensions is instituting major changes to its benefits for 2021, and it will take time for us to incorporate them clearly into the 2021 compensation program. Report on ministerial compensation and benefits” until its October 3, 2020 meeting.

b) The Presbytery agreed to postpone the standing rule for the June 2020, presbytery meeting to approve the compensation program recommendations for the following year (2021) until the October 2020, presbytery meeting.

Rationale: due to health issues, the Consultant for Compensation and Benefits was unable to attempt to gather compensation data on her usual schedule. It was also felt that the added burdens on pastors caused by the pandemic response would make it difficult for them to respond in a timely manner.

224th General Assembly Report - Rev. Joshua Jong told the Presbytery about the amazing diversity that made up the 224th s commissioners. That while it was virtual, the general outlines of the General Assembly’s work was clear. The experience gave him a whole new perspective on combatting COVID 19

Elder Ellen Gove- told the Presbytery that the 224th added two items of business to the docket and spent over a third of its time perfecting an anti-racism piece of business, which calls on all Presbyterians to erase racism in their communities.

Aiseosa Irowa - Told the Presbytery about doing a General Assembly remotely. She noted that while meeting virtually prevented the development of lasting personal relationships, for her generation, doing business digitally was not confusing, nor difficult. She compared the virtual 224th GA to her experiences at three Presbyterian Trienniums she attended.

Report of Personnel Committee

Presbytery of Long Island Stated Meeting - ZOOM - June 30, 2020

The Personnel Committee met on June 18, 2020. The committee discussed salary adjustment for 2021.

The Personnel Committee recommends that the Presbytery approve a 2% salary increase for the fiscal year 2021.

This recommendation is being made after meetings with Elder Laurie Vu, Administrative Assistant/Assistant to the Stated Clerk, the Rev. Mark Tammen, General Presbyter/Stated Clerk, and Deacon Patrick Knight, Treasurer, for yearly evaluations. The entire staff was given a big thank you for taking all steps needed to keep the presbytery functioning efficiently during the pandemic.

Elder Vu was especially thanked for the work she initiated in making all committee meetings rule smoothly through zoom. As we all know, the way we are currently called to “do church” has been a learning experience for all of us. Laurie has made that experience more palatable.

The Personnel Committee recommends that the Presbytery approve $36,432 for the fiscal PRC for the

year 2021.

This is an increase in the stipend for 2021. Our colleagues in the PRC now work on average 138 hours/month between the two of them. The PRC has been especially helpful in providing webinars for teaching church school, financial helps, even how to get music copyrights as well as other helpful information. However, in this stressful time, they have provided opportunities for clergy to participate in webinars and zoom meetings with other clergy to discuss how churches are coping with the pandemic. The staff has also done amazing work with their “Church Online” emails in providing, among other items, information and links to requirements, both state and county, for re-opening our buildings.

We also briefly discussed making better use of our staff. This was a continued discussion from our last meeting but with a possible new direction.

No actions needed at this time.

Respectfully submitted, Rev Glorya Johnson, Chair
