EARNING CREDITS

Understanding high school credits, course numbering, and semester system:

• Credits: All courses require a 50% or better to earn credits and advance to the next level. Note that many academic courses recommend at least 60% to ensure success at the next level. Core classes are worth 5 credits each. 100 credits are necessary for an Alberta High School Diploma.

Block 0 and 5

Adding courses for students at the beginning and end of each school day will help us to support students in accessing programming that will work for them, by providing stu-dents with more choice and flexibility as they work toward high school completion.

A few important points about block 0 and 5 at W. P Wagner next year:

• These blocks will not be mandatory for students. When selecting courses for next year, students will have the choice to take courses that are offered before or after school.

• Students will only be able to take a maximum of 4 classes per semester in grade 10 and potentially fewer in grades 11 and 12.

• Not all classes will be offered during block 0 and 5 and are subject to student demand and teacher availability.

New Timetable

In addition to the block 0 and 5 classes we will be moving to a new timetable for the 2020-21 school year. Though classes will be slightly shorter in length, students will additionally have access to regularly scheduled tutorial time within subject areas. These tutorial times will be posted throughout the school and on SchoolZone at the beginning of each semes-ter, so that students will know how and when they can connect with teachers for addition-al support.

Note: * There will be no block 0 on the second Thursday of the month and no block 5 on the last Thursday of the month to allow for staff meetings and collaboration.
