Priorities

SAFETY is our top priority.

The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Plans will reflect

federal, state, and local regulations and guidance, informed by best practices.

FLEXIBILITY We will continue to follow federal,

state, and local regulations. Plans will be developed to allow us to pivot quickly and respond to changes in

instructional, operational, and wellness models.

PREFERRED LEARNING SCENARIO The preferred learning scenario is in-person learning. In the event that in-person learning

cannot occur, hybrid and distance learning plans have also been developed.

Additionally, families can choose distance learning if they have medical reasons to stay at home or are not comfortable returning to the classroom.

Stakeholder Feedback Eagle Ridge Academy families and staff members were surveyed from June 29-July 3. 679 responses were

collected from the Fall 2020 Family Survey and 102 responses were collected from the Fall 2020 Staff Survey. The survey results were used in the preliminary planning of Eagle Ridge Academy’s Roadmap to Reopening.

74.23% of families would have their children participate in in-person learning in the fall. On a scale of 1-5, families

gave an average rating of 3 in regard to their level of comfort with sending their children to in-person learning

in the fall with safeguards in place.

OPERATIONS: Protective Measures Cleaning and Disinfecting

Commonly touched surfaces will be sanitized at a minimum of two hour intervals.

The facility will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized nightly in accordance with the guidance set by the Eagle Ridge Academy 2020-21 Scenario Planning Guide.

Face Coverings Staff and students will be required to wear a face covering over their mouth and nose within the building and in instances during drop off and pick up when physical distancing (previously known as social distancing) is not possible.

The Academy will provide each student with one reusable cloth face mask.

The Academy will provide each staff member two reusable cloth face masks.

The Academy has procured disposable face masks and face shields to assure compliance with the face covering policy.

Daily Health Screening In accordance with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recommendations for health screening, staff and students will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms prior to entering the building or boarding Academy-provided transportation.

Staff members or students that exhibit symptoms related to COVID-19 or are presumed positive for COVID-19 will need to contact Paula Kofflin, school nurse, prior to coming to school to discuss next steps.

The school nurse will work with MDH to determine next steps based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and MDH guidance in symptomatic or positive cases of COVID-19.

Hand Hygiene Staff and students will be required to wash their hands at a minimum of two hour intervals and after touching commonly shared surfaces, as recommended by the Eagle Ridge Academy 2020-21 Scenario Planning Guide.

OPERATIONS: Transportation

Eagle Ridge Academy Provided Transportation Capacity of buses will be limited to 50 riders.

Students and drivers will wear a face covering while on the bus.

Students and drivers will complete a health screening prior to boarding the bus.

Assigned seating will be required in a manner that loads the bus from back to front.

Buses will be released upon their arrival at the Academy in a staggered manner to avoid high traffic as students enter the building.

School of Grammar students will enter the building through the designated door at Door 4.

School of Logic students will enter the building through Door 3.

School of Rhetoric students will enter the building through the designated door at Door 4.

Buses will be sanitized between each route and deep cleaned and sanitized in accordance with the guidelines established by the Metropolitan Transportation Network.

OPERATIONS: Transportation

Self-Transportation Parents are encouraged to provide transportation for their children if possible.

Parents will follow the drop off and pick up procedures set forth by the Academy.

School of Grammar students will enter the building through Door 2.

School of Logic students will enter the building through Door 3.

School of Rhetoric students will enter the building through the designated door at Door 4.

OPERATIONS: Day to Day

Arrival and Dismissal Students will wear face masks during arrival and dismissal.

Arrival times will be divided into two tiers (7:30-7:45 a.m. and 7:45-8:00 a.m.). Families will be informed of their designated tier for drop off.

Dismissal of grades K-5 will be managed through Silent Dismissal.

Parents will not be allowed into the building for drop off or dismissal.

Staff will be on hand to facilitate drop off and dismissal.

Parents that approach the building will be asked to wait outside of Door 2. They must wear a face covering and practice physical distancing.

Signage, directional arrows, and stanchions may be used to direct students.

Students will go straight to their classroom upon arrival at the Academy.

Students will exit the building as soon as they are released from their classroom.

Students will not be allowed in the building or vestibule prior to 7:30 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m.

Visitors Visitors to the building will be limited to essential services and by appointment only.

Visitors will follow all protocol required by the Academy.

Visitors will provide contact information.

All School Gatherings Large group and all school gatherings will be temporarily suspended.

Meetings Virtual meeting formats such as Zoom should be utilized when possible.

Physical distancing will be required for all in-person meetings.

Field Trips Field trips will be temporarily suspended.

Food Service School breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Students will eat in small cohorts in alternate spaces.

Learning Scenarios *The learning scenarios for the 2020-2021 school year will be determined by the Minnesota Department of Health.

According to the Minnesota Department of Education, in the in-person learning scenario, schools should create as much space between students and teachers as is feasible during the day, but will not be strictly held to enforcing six feet of physical distancing during primary instructional time in the classroom. This scenario may be implemented, assuming state COVID-19 metrics continue to stabilize and/or improve. In-person learning is Eagle Ridge Academy’s preferred learning scenario. In the in-person learning scenario, Eagle Ridge Academy is able to provide the highest quality Classical education possible. The majority of the program will be similar to Eagle Ridge Academy’s traditional learning, though some modifications may need to be made to align in-person learning with the scope and sequence of the distance learning program. Eagle Ridge Academy will follow traditional learning models as much as possible, while also following Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Education guidelines. Common spaces and classrooms will be modified to create space, and schedules are subject to change. Lunch and recess will be modified to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

According to the Minnesota Department of Education, in this planning scenario, schools must limit the overall number of people in school facilities and on transportation vehicles to 50% maximum occupancy. Sufficient physical distancing with at least six feet between people must occur at all times. If physical distancing cannot be achieved in a space or on a transportation vehicle, the number of occupants must be reduced. Schools must also include plans for contactless pick up and/or delivery of meals and school materials for days that students and staff are not in the school building, as well as implementation of a school-age care program for critical workers. This scenario may be implemented if COVID-19 metrics worsen at the local, regional, or statewide level. Scenario 2 may also be implemented within a school if they experience clusters of cases within a classroom or the school.

Hybrid Learning Defined: Hybrid learning is commonly used to describe classes in which some traditional face-to-face instruction has been replaced by distance learning activities. A hybrid class is designed to integrate face-to-face and distance learning activities so that they build on one another, instead of treating the online component as an add-on or duplicate of what is taught in the classroom. During classroom instruction time, students can be engaged in authentic, collaborative learning experiences. The distance learning components can include multimedia-enhanced content, learning practice, and opportunities for ongoing discussion. Synchronous Learning Defined: Synchronous learning is real-time learning that is relational. Students and teachers will interact in a specific virtual place (ex. Zoom), through a specific online medium (ex. Discussion), at a specific time. Methods of synchronous online learning include video conferencing, live chatting and live-streaming classes. Synchronous learning encourages increased classroom engagement, dynamic learning, and instructional depth. However, synchronous learning is less flexible. Asynchronous Learning Defined: Asynchronous learning is recorded video or independent work that is convenient and flexible. Teachers will provide materials for reading, lectures for viewing, assignments for completing, and exams for evaluation, and students will have the ability to access and complete tasks within a flexible time frame. Methods of asynchronous learning include self-guided lesson modules, streaming video content, posted lecture notes, and exchanges on discussion boards. Asynchronous learning is less relational than synchronous learning but is more flexible and students can move at their own pace.

In the Hybrid Learning Model, there are strict capacity limits to ensure physical distancing. Students will be divided into two groups: A Group and B Group. In one example of a hybrid schedule, A Group students and B Group students will alternate their time in the building by week. A weekly hybrid schedule is preferred over a daily hybrid schedule as it allows an organic quarantine for each group.

On A Week, A Group students will be in the school building Monday-Thursday for in-person learning while B Group students are at home doing distance learning. On Fridays, all students and staff will be at home in distance learning supported work time and will be preparing for the following week’s transition. This will allow for the building to be sanitized and all of the air in the building to circulate before the following week. During the following week, Group A students will be at home doing distance learning while B Group students will be in the school building Monday-Thursday for in-person learning.

In-Person Learning

Students learn in-person in the school building, which is at half capacity to ensure physical distancing.

Distance Learning Students learn independently, outside of the school building, using an online curriculum that is provided by Eagle Ridge Academy. Online curriculum, resources, and support will be provided for distance learning students. A technology device will also be provided, if needed, to partake in distance learning.

According to the Minnesota Department of Education, this scenario may be implemented if local, regional, or statewide COVID-19 metrics worsen significantly enough to require the suspension of in-person learning. Distance Learning Defined: Students engaging in distance learning have access to appropriate educational materials and receive daily interaction with their licensed teacher(s). It is important to note that distance learning does not always mean e-learning or online learning. It is critical to provide this learning in a format that can be equitably accessed by all students. Opportunities for Growth Based upon survey feedback from parents, there were four major opportunities for growth to improve distance learning.

• A cohesive K-12 platform to streamline communication and provide efficiency and clarity for completing assignments

• More teacher-led instruction • More interaction with teachers and peers • Incorporate more Classical content and instruction. Taking into account this

information, the Eagle Ridge Academy has developed the following Classical distance learning model.

Synchronous Instruction Synchronous instruction is real-time, live learning that is relational.

In order to maintain the integrity of our Classical content and pedagogy, and to meet the state guidelines, teachers will be increasing the amount of direct instruction provided to students to match in-person learning.

Synchronous instruction also provides opportunities for relationships, which supports the goals of a Classical Education to have great conversations and community.

Learning Management System The purpose of a Learning Management System (LMS) is to create a single, consistent, familiar digital learning environment, which can connect many apps with a single sign-on and platform in order to deliver content.

Based on the feedback of the Technology Task Force and teachers, Eagle Ridge Academy will be using an LMS called Canvas.

There were several factors that went into the decision making, such as: integration with Infinite Campus, student data privacy protection, integration of Google Classroom, integration of digital versions of textbooks, additional tools and features to enhance Classical instruction and differentiate for students, ease of system.

Teachers will respond to parent/student questions within 24 hours (weekends and holidays are not scheduled work hours for teachers).

Instruction In grades 6-12, our goal is to primarily provide live instruction. Students choosing to be distance learning will follow their same period schedule and log into class on Zoom to participate in live instruction taking place at Eagle Ridge Academy. In grades K-5, students will participate in a distance learning cohort with dedicated teachers. There may be opportunities for K-5 students to participate in live instruction. We are still working on specialty classes such as physical education and art that may not be feasible for synchronous instruction.

Instruction Distance learning students will be held to the same rigor, expectations, grading, and learning objectives as those that are participating in person. This will match hour to hour the instruction that students would receive in face-to-face classroom. Attendance will be taken daily.

Students are encouraged to use a device from home because it provides a more seamless transition into distance learning. Canvas, the LMS, works with any device including cell phones, as it allows the user to download material for offline use.

The Academy will provide devices to students on an as needed basis. As we are currently staffed, Eagle Ridge Academy is prepared to support 40% of our student body in the distance learning choice.

Sign Up The opportunity to sign up for distance learning will begin on August 7, with a deadline of August 14, to allow the Academy to plan for staffing.

Priority will be given in the following order: 1. Medically fragile students 2. Students that do not feel safe in the provided environment

Opportunities for switching from distance learning to in-person learning will be provided on a bi- quarterly basis.

• One week’s notice is required to move from distance learning to in-person learning. • Two days’ notice is required to move from in-person learning to distance learning.

Privacy Protection during COVID-19 Pandemic If reports of positive COVID-19 tests are shared, Eagle Ridge Academy will work in conjunction with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) to follow all necessary procedures.

Eagle Ridge Academy will not disclose the identity of an employee who has tested positive for, or otherwise been diagnosed with, COVID-19 to co-workers who were in close contact with the infected employee during the relevant 10 day period. Eagle Ridge Academy will provide co-workers with information that would help them evaluate the risk of infection as a necessary safety precaution. (HIPAA Privacy and Coronavirus)

Leave of Absence Options Eagle Ridge Academy has implemented leave of absence policies that promote employees staying at home when they are sick, when household members are sick, or when required by a licensed health care provider to isolate or quarantine themselves or a member of their household. Leaves of absences will be managed by Human Resources. HR will maintain close communication with supervisors about leave statuses. (US Department of Labor, Families First Coronavirus Response Act)

Eagle Ridge Academy expects and has planned for some disruption regarding staff absences. Therefore, an additional Building Substitute will be hired. Substitutes will be trained on the learning management system. In addition, the Academy will increase the daily pay rate of short call substitutes.

Return to Work Requirement Return to work documentation will be required before allowing employees on a leave due to COVID-19 to return to work. If you have been diagnosed with COVID-19, you may return to work when all 3 criteria are met:

• At least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since recovery (no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications); and

• You have improved respiratory symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, etc.); and • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first occurred.

Fall 2020 Task Force

In the May 7 edition of The Eagle Eye, Eagle Ridge Academy invited volunteers to participate in the Fall 2020 Task Force.
