Welcome to the Wolfpack family! At NC State, we view the relationship we have with our students’
parents and families as a partnership; one created to help students be successful. It is our goal to
nurture that relationship by keeping you well-informed, because we sincerely believe that when you
are informed, your student will benefit.
WELCOME TO THE WOLFPACK
We are delighted that your student has chosen NC State.
Our exceptional Wolfpack community makes NC State
great, and we know that your family will strengthen it
further. Over the next few years, your student will be
immersed in the world-class instruction and innovation
for which NC State and the Research Triangle are known.
As a university, we work to provide all students with the
resources and support to create a foundation for success.
We are proud to offer our students a great variety of
educational opportunities, allowing them to gain real-world
experience, recognize their potential and discover how they
can make an impact – whether through participating in honors
and scholars programs, understanding of global perspectives
during study abroad programs or tackling real-world
challenges through hands-on research. Students can also be
involved in an exceptional variety of co-curricular activities
and on-campus programming including pre-professional
organizations, intramural sports and opportunities for service.
Embodying the Think and Do spirit, NC State students stand
apart as creative, critical thinkers.
NC State produces national scholars and fellows, and
our graduates are consistently ranked among the most
desirable in the nation. Our alumni contribute more
than $4.2 billion to the state economy each year. From
launching businesses to producing new technologies, they
are changing the world in meaningful ways. No matter
what your student’s goal may be, at NC State, we help
make it a reality.
Our students’ success is built on a longstanding tradition
of educational excellence as well as a productive
partnership between families and the university. We know
that you are not only an advocate for your student but also
a source of encouragement and support.
We want to ensure that you have the necessary resources
to be well informed and involved. Parents’ Orientation is
a significant first step to helping your student achieve a
smooth transition into college. The Office of Parents and
Families Services provides a variety of resources to help
keep you connected to all things NC State. I hope you
find this calendar and handbook a useful reference for
information about dates, events, academics and student
life on campus.
We are genuinely excited to have your family join us. Welcome
to our tradition-rich, vibrant, diverse community. I wish you
and your student the best as we start the academic year
together and embark on a bright future.
Sincerely,
W. Randolph Woodson
Chancellor

MyPack Portal is the online student information
system used by NC State students to access
all of their academic records, enrollment and
degree planning tools, student accounts, personal
information, on-campus living information and more.
Students can securely access MyPack Portal using
their Unity ID and password.
Under FERPA, students also have the option to grant
parent/guardian access to see certain information in
MyPack Portal including Student Accounts/Billing/
Payment, Tax Information, Academic Information,
Directory Information and Financial Aid.
Students can grant parent/guardian access by
navigating to MyPack Portal Student Homepage
Personal Information Parent/Guardian Access.
More information about using MyPack Portal
and parent/guardian access is available online at
studentservices.ncsu.edu.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA) is a federal law and set of regulations
governing the access to, and privacy of, educational
records. FERPA gives students access to most of
their academic records as well as the ability to
obtain copies of these records. This law states
that student records are private and may only
be disclosed to school officials, other authorized
personnel or with the consent of the student. This
law also allows colleges and universities to publish
directory information without consent unless a
student chooses to block their information.
NC State has made it easy for students to grant
consent to parents or guardians so that they
may access educational records or financial
information through MyPack Portal in the student
information system.
For more information visit go.ncsu.edu/ferpa.

01 Congratulations, and welcome to the Wolfpack Family!Congratulations, and welcome to the Wolfpack Family!
I. ALL-ACCESS PACK PARENT
Hello, Pack Parents!
My name is Mike Massing, and I would like to take this
opportunity to welcome you to the Pack and the amazing
journey you and your student will experience these next
four years! As the parent of one alumnus and two current
students at NC State, our journey has been one of tremendous
pride, both for our children and of belonging to such a great
university!
When my son Jake chose NC State in 2015 and we first
stepped onto campus, we quickly got a sense of the size of
the university and the sheer number of students that go here.
However, within that size is an amazing personal approach
within each college that made Jake feel very comfortable!
He often remarked about the one-on-one conversations with
faculty members within the College of Natural Resources.
Because of this, he was able to build many relationships with
fellow students, as a good portion of his classes contained
20-30 students.
My middle daughter Jena transferred into NC State as a
sophomore after playing softball for one year at a smaller,
private university. She is in the Poole College of Management
and loves it for the same reasons that Jake loves the College of
Natural Resources. In addition, students in the Poole College of
Management are well recognized for their academic excellence
and track record of student success as future business leaders!
This is what drew Jena to the program.
My youngest daughter Julia, our freshman at NC State, was
accepted at other well-known universities but choose this
university...not out of peer pressure...but because she saw
the experience that her two siblings had and wanted that for
herself as well! Though she has visited them on campus MANY
times, she has etched out her own path and LOVES NC State’s
College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
This brings me to my main topic for you. Being an active part
of NC State starts with taking advantage of what the Office of
Parents and Families Services has to offer. For instance, one
of the first things we did with Jake, and every year after that,
was go to the Parents and Families Weekend pre-game event
and football game! What a blast we have had every year!
From the food, to the “swag,” to just meeting other families
as we tailgate; nothing gets you more into the full swing of
campus events than this! We have invited aunts, uncles and
grandparents over the years and they have loved each event!
We attended the Memorial Belltower tour during Jake’s
senior year, as well as the tour of Reynolds Coliseum this
past year. Both were led by Dr. Stafford, who is one of the
most passionate historians I have ever heard speak about the
university. Goosebumps; I tell you! Especially when you hear
about and see memorabilia of all who have walked these halls!
In addition we have participated in many events on campus
like the Chocolate Festival and “Paint with the Pack” all brought
to you by Parents and Families Services!
Go Pack!
Sincerely,
Mike Massing, Proud Pack Parent

02 Pack Parent Pack Parent Benefit ProgramsBenefit Programs
The Office of Parents and Families Services nurtures the
partnership of parents, students and the university by
encouraging parents to become more involved and informed
about life at NC State. Your student’s success is dependent
on your support and engagement. By partnering with us
and supporting your student, you are part of the Wolfpack
community and a very important parent.
For this reason, the Office of Parents and Families Services
has worked hard to create benefit programs exclusively for
Pack Parents. Our Parent Pride Points program was developed
in collaboration with Student Government and the Student
Alumni Association to provide opportunities for parents and
students to experience some of the richest Wolfpack traditions
NC State has to offer. The VIP (Very Important Parent) discount
program offers local and online discounts. Our newest
program, Pack Family Regions, was created with our out-
of-state families in mind, and helps parents create Wolfpack
networks all over the United States. So whether you are near
or far, Pack Families can feel connected and engaged with one
another. (See right for more details about Pack Family Regions
and the VIP discount program.)
Remember: Parents and Families Services is supportive of all
family members of NC State students and considers all to
be Pack Parents. All affiliated programs are open to anyone in
the student’s family and all are invited, as well as encouraged,
to participate.
When your student joins the Wolfpack, you do too!
Whether you are near or far, we want to keep you
connected with the NC State community; one that
extends far and wide. For this reason, we have
developed a regional program to help our families
engage with the University and each other. With
nearly 24,000 undergraduate students, NC State has
students from every county in North Carolina and
almost every state in the country! Chances are, there
is another Pack Family in your region.
With eight regions across the United States, all groups
are voluntary and the only requirement is that you
have an NC State student, either currently enrolled or a
recent graduate. Pack Parents can sign-up easily online
and we will email all regions in the fall and spring
semesters with news, upcoming events, need-to-know
information, and shared contact lists (with permission)
specific to each region.
Whether it is a send-off right before the next
semester begins, a luncheon to connect and check-
in, ride-shares or a welcome home dinner during
breaks, we want Pack Families everywhere to get to
know one another and share their Wolfpack pride.

support student success. Parents and students should
openly discuss expectations for information-sharing and
access. Parents should keep an up-to-date parent profile
in MyPack Portal if your student has granted you access.

productive academically while in class, serious illness, death
of a family member or a natural disaster.
Communication with instructors as soon as possible once
the event is known is expected and in everyone’s best
interest. Excuses must be reported no more than one week
after a student’s return to class. If your student is unable
to notify instructors, parents/guardians can contact an
Absence Verification Officer to work alongside the student
to communicate with the student’s instructors. A copy of
the verification message is also sent to the student and the
student’s Academic Advisor.
Additional information is available online at
go.ncsu.edu/attendance.

01 University HousingUniversity HousingUniversity Housing provides on-campus living options for more than 9,400 students through 20 residence halls and four on-campus apartment complexes. Living on campus is an essential part of the Wolfpack experience, and students are required to live on campus their first year. The University Housing staff has developed unique residential experiences to promote academic and personal success. On-campus summer housing options are also available to students taking summer classes or interning in the greater Raleigh area. Residents should apply for on-campus housing through MyPack Portal. academic and personal goals in close collaboration with
mentors, professors and others who share common interests.
Resident Advisors (RAs) and Village Mentors are students
trained and employed by University Housing to build
community and maintain a safe living and learning
environment within a residence hall or an on-campus
apartment. RAs and Mentors serve as a resource, peer role
model and plan activities that support residents’ personal,
academic and professional success. These student staff
members are either supervised by a Graduate Assistant,
Residence Life Coordinator or Village Director who is also
focused on the residential experience across campus.

Fraternity and Sorority LifeFraternity and Sorority LifeThe Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) aims
to prepare students for society through a values-based
fraternal experience. Focusing on Chapter Services, Council
and Community Development and the Living/Learning
Experience, the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life
provides holistic development of affiliated students.
Chapter Services
The fraternity/sorority community at NC State is comprised
of 50+ men’s and women’s organizations including over 3,000
students representing more than 13% of undergraduates at
NC State. Staff members meet regularly with chapter leaders,
alumni and national representatives to ensure chapters are
providing meaningful experiences for their members.
Council and Community Development
FSL advises four governing councils within the fraternity/
sorority community. The Interfraternity Council is comprised
of men’s organizations, while the Panhellenic Association is
comprised of women’s organizations. The Multicultural Greek
Council organizations honor specific cultural traditions. The
National Pan-Hellenic Council is comprised of historically
African American fraternities and sororities.
Living/Learning Experience
Greek Village serves as the hub to all members of FSL
organizations, providing a place to break bread, host
philanthropy events, facilitate member activities and
much more. Chapter Resident Directors live on site to
ensure facility safety as well as compliance with University
standards.

Study AbroadStudy AbroadStudy Abroad allows students to develop skills required
to face the grand challenges of society — it deepens
intercultural sensitivity, challenges participants to think more
critically and creatively and broadens both personal and
academic perspectives. It teaches independence, flexibility
and the ability to deal with ambiguity. Study Abroad students
distinguish themselves from their peers by developing these
skills and engaging in a unique learning environment abroad.
Student participants fulfill major, minor and general
education program requirements abroad. For all majors,
with academic planning, studying abroad does not delay
graduation at NC State. Early planning will help to ensure
that students are able to take advantage of the funding
available and ensure progress toward graduation. Students
are eligible to receive financial aid (including loans, grants
and scholarships) for the cost of any Study Abroad program.
Semester exchange programs provide the most economical
option for most students since standard tuition and fees keep
the cost of a semester abroad comparable to a semester on
campus at NC State. In addition to over half a million dollars
per year in study abroad scholarships, there are many other
financial resources available in support of study abroad.
The Study Abroad Office supports students throughout the
process from initial interest to their return to campus.

Bicycling is an inexpensive, healthy and environmentally
friendly way to travel to, from and around campus.
Bike racks are conveniently located throughout all three
campuses. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase a
U-bolt for safe and secure storage. Students must register
their bicycles with Transportation at no charge.
LimeBike and LimeScooter are NC State’s bike and scooter
sharing programs. There’s no kiosk docking station, so bikes
and scooters can be ridden anywhere and parked at any
bike rack or designated parking area throughout campus!
Download the Lime mobile app and sign-up with an NC State
email address for discounted rates.
Parking Enforcement
Appropriate parking permissions are required between the
hours of 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday (most residential
areas are enforced until midnight, Monday - Thursday).
Permits are not required after 5 p.m. in any unreserved
student commuter or faculty/staff spaces or lots. Never park
in a “24-hr Reserved” space, accessibility space, fire lane or
area not specifically designated for parking.
WolfTrails
NC State Transportation provides a variety of alternative
transportation programs for your student through WolfTrails.
There are many options to choose from, including:
ShareTheRide NC, NC State’s social network for ridesharing;
Zipcar, a car-sharing program. Learn more about these
options and more on the Transportation website.
Wolfline (Intra-campus)
NC State’s transit system, Wolfline, carries an average of
almost 19,000 riders per day and connects NC State’s three
campuses and surrounding areas. All Wolfline buses are
accessible and equipped with TransLoc Rider (download
the free mobile app) which allows riders to see real-time
bus locations online. No fare is required. Service frequency
varies, but generally, daytime service is available every 10
- 15 minutes. Saturday/Sunday daytime service connects
Main and Centennial Campus, as well as James B. Hunt
Jr. and D.H. Hill Jr. libraries. Evening service operates until
approximately 2 a.m. Wolfline buses run each day classes are
held and during exams. They provide intra-campus service
to the McKimmon Center, park and ride lots, resident storage
lot and surrounding areas along the routes. Bus service does
not run on official university holidays.
City/Regional
The GoPass program, which is available for a minimal
handling fee, allows students to ride city buses, GoRaleigh and
regional buses and GoTriangle for no fare. All that is needed to
travel to any Raleigh or Triangle destination is a GoPass swipe
card and student ID. Students can order their GoPass online at
the Transportation website beginning in early July.

students have limited available options. Permits are sold
on a semester basis and cost depends on the type of
permit purchased. Students can purchase permits online;
they are sold on a first-come, first-served basis according
to a student’s amount of credit hours earned. Permits are
virtual and linked to license plates through License Plate
Recognition (LPR).

coordination of all aspects of the student conduct process
at NC State University. This includes providing educational
programs to students, consulting with faculty and managing
the review process for the resolution of alleged student
misconduct. The office administers the Code of Student

Student Ombuds ServicesStudent Ombuds ServicesWhat is “Ombuds?” A guide for conflict management,
prevention and resolution. The Ombuds provides an
informal, confidential, impartial and independent source
of assistance for students to help them navigate their
university experience. A Student Ombuds advocates for fair
processes, working to empower the student to successfully
navigate the institution to address challenges and identify
resources. In short, if a student — or a student’s family —
has a unique situation and doesn’t know where to turn for
support, direction or an understanding “ear,” contact Student
Ombuds Services (S.O.S.) to explore options and next steps.
Students may come to S.O.S. for a variety of reasons.
Student Ombuds Services serves as a first point of contact
for students experiencing food, housing and/or financial
insecurity and helps connect students to available resources
if they experience an unexpected financial challenge.
Sometimes students simply want to talk. Some are reluctant
to go through formal channels. Others don’t know where
else to go, and some have tried other ways to get help, but
haven’t found what they need. If you are not sure whether
S.O.S. can help, please contact us, no matter how big or
small your student’s concern may be. All conversations are
voluntary, confidential and free.

The Code of Student Conduct is a set of behavioral
standards for students in the NC State community. This
policy covers topics related to academic and non-academic
misconduct and the possible sanctions for instances when
a student is found in violation. Students are encouraged to
be familiar with this Code as it applies to them both on and
off-campus.
For a full version of the Code of Student Conduct, please

A Special Message to A Special Message to Pack FamiliesPack FamiliesNC State has a Responsible Behavior Initiative. As part of its
mission, the education provided for students emphasizes
responsibility to oneself and the community. Talk with your
student about decision making, expectations and general
best practices for personal safety.
Here are a few tips to highlight:
Be aware of surroundings when walking at night
Communicate any suspicious activity with an RA or
university administrator
Do not give out access codes for residence halls
Do not leave items unattended at any time
Do not prop doors open
Do not walk with headphones in
Keep the door to your residence hall room locked at
all times
Lock your vehicle
Remain in well-lit areas
Report lost keys immediately
Students are required to register bicycles with
NC State University Transportation (free of charge)
Take responsibility for personal safety and security
Emergency PreparednessEmergency PreparednessEmergency planning and preparedness are key to
minimizing impact from an unplanned event. For our
students, NC State encourages them to make a plan!
Pack a bag!
Be Pack Ready!
Have a communication plan in place with your student so
you both know how you would communicate in the event
of an emergency on campus. Keep in mind that, without
charge, cell phone batteries will go dead, so be sure to keep
emergency phone numbers written down should you need
assistance. Consider where you would go if an emergency
strikes and you have to leave your home. A personal
emergency plan should have alternate locations in case
your home is impacted.
Pack a Bag!
We recommend being ready to move quickly with an
emergency kit (bag) and have the following supplies
readily available in residence halls, apartments, homes
and offices for the first 24 hours of an event or until
normal conditions return:
At least 1 gallon of drinking water
Blankets or sleeping bag
First aid kit
Flashlight with batteries
Food for pets
Non-perishable food and can opener
Prescription medications and eyeglasses
More resources for Pack Ready Emergency Planning can be
found online at go.ncsu.edu/packready.
Emergency Communications at NC State
WolfAlert is NC State’s official emergency communication
system. NC State takes the safety of its community very
seriously and with only the highest regard. In case of an
emergency, different options are available for updates and
directions.
For students on campus, these WolfAlert communication
options may be used:
Audible Alerts via Siren
Around campus, there are mounted speakers that send
audible signals to widespread areas. Generally these
messages will be brief with specific instructions and direct
listeners on how to stay up-to-date.
Student Text Alerts
Your student has the ability to receive text messages to
their cell phone with safety alerts. The message will be brief
and contain safety instructions or details they need to know
immediately. This service is only for students, and your
student should verify their contact number in MyPack Portal.
Email Alerts
Broadcast emails are delivered to all official University
email accounts containing your [email protected].
Online Notifications
WolfAlerts may be posted on the NC State’s homepage
at ncsu.edu and posted online via social media, such as
Twitter. Suggested groups to follow are @NCState,
@ncstateemmc, @ncsupolice and @NCStatePFS.
Desktop Notifications
Alertus is a desktop notification available to devices
connected to the NC State network. The University has the
ability to post emergency alerts to individual computers via
Alertus software.
Emergency Information for Parents
WolfAlerts are designated for students, faculty and staff.
Pack Parents and Families off-campus are encouraged
to download the NC State On Campus app to receive
notifications and emergency information.
