Revised 2.27.19
2020-2021 Middle School ELA Course Progression
Option A: Students who scored Level 1 or 2 on the previous year’s FSA.
Option B: Students who scored a level 3 or above on the previous year’s FSA.
Recommendations:Level 1 students may also be enrolled in M/J Intensive Reading [1000010]. As an alternative to M/J Intensive Reading, students could also be enrolled in M/J Reading 1 [1008010] (6th), 2 [1008040] (7th), or 3 [1008070] (8th).

Students are not confined to these suggestions. Placement should be a decision that assures the success of all students as well as equal access and exposure to rigorous coursework. Although we encourage students to take rigorous coursework, please note that student experiences will vary and students should be guided into coursework that ensures academic success and attainment of post-secondary goals. Student placement should be reassessed each year with consideration given to course performance and FSA results.

2020-2021 Middle School Science Course ProgressionRecommendations:• Students who have earned a combination of 4’s and 5’s on 5th grade
assessments in ELA, Science, and Mathematics should be placed in Option B.
• Students who have earned a combination of 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s on 5th grade assessments in ELA, Science, and Mathematics should be consid ered for placement in option B, but scale scores and student grades should be taken into consideration.
• Students who have earned all 3’s on 5th grade assessments in ELA, Science, and Mathematics could be considered for placement in option B, but they may require additional supports. Scale scores, student grades, and available systems of additional support must be taken into consideration.
o These students could also be scheduled into Option A 2, and may not need an additional support system.
• Students who have earned a combination of 2’s and 3’s on 5th grade assessments in ELA, Science, and Mathematics could be considered for placement in Option A 2, but they may require additional supports. Scale scores, student grades, and available systems ofadditional support must be taken into consideration.
• Students have earned all 2’s or 1’s on 5th grade assessments in ELA, Science, and Mathematics should be placed in Option A 1.
Implications: • If a student moves from Option B to Option A in the transition
between their 6th and 7th grade year they will miss:o All 6th Grade Physical and Earth Space Science Standards
• If a student moves from Option B to Option A in the transition between their 7th and 8th grade year they will miss:
o All 6th and 7th Grade Physical Science Standards and 7th Grade Nature of Science Standards
• If a student moves from Option A to Option B in the transition between their 6th and 7th grade year they will miss:
o All 7th and 8th grade Life Science Standards• If a student moves from Option A to Option B in the transition
between their 7th and 8th grade year they will miss:o All 8th Grade Life Science and Earth Space Science Standards
• Students following Option B are not exposed to any middle school Earth Space and Physical Science standards because they are receiving instruction in similar standards from the 9-12 grade band. Schools must work with teachers to ensure that students in these courses are being exposed to instruction in the prerequisite/ correlated middle school standards.

indicates there are NO content gaps created along this pathway if the courses are taught based on the course description/expectationsindicates there ARE content gaps created along this pathway (more detail included on the following pages)indicates an option for students to slow down acceleration if neededindicates students may benefit from enrollment in a second math class, scheduled consecutively with the course indicated, so that there is additional time to fill gaps for content that was skipped because of acceleration
Notes:Acceleration:• Parents/Guardians of students who are on a pathway that includes taking a high school course in middle school should be informed that those course grades will be part of the
student’s HS GPA so that they can approve this progression for their child.

Students must have attended MAO acceleration
opportunity & received a level 3 or above on FSA
Math to remain in Calculus Project
MAO Calculus Project – Implications for Each Pathway
Calculus Project Student Eligibility Guidelines:• Must be a 6th grade student• Should be currently in 6th or 7th Adv. Math• 5th Grade FSA Math Scores should be a 4
• 5th Grade FSA ELA score should be at least 3• Shouldhavelessthan10firstsemesterabsences• 1st semester math grade of B or higher recommended
• No more than 1 level 3 discipline suspension• Commitment to attend Acceleration opportunities during
the summer and after school
Recommendations:• Monitor closely through exit slips/class participation and reassess placement at the end of 1st 9 weeks in Algebra 1.• If students received 6th grade FSA level 2 remove from Calculus Project ➞ follow district progression • If students received 6th grade FSA level 3 and didn’t attend summer learning, exit from Calculus Project ➞ follow district progressionImplications:• If enrolled in 7th grade Advanced Math in 6th grade, students will need scaffolded support for the standards not addressed in this course. This includes all of the 6th grade standards and half of the
7th grade standards.• If enrolled in 6th grade Advanced Math in 6th grade, students will need scaffolded support for about 1.5 years’ worth of content entering Algebra. This includes the remaining (16) 7th grade
standards and all of Pre-Algebra standards. These standards include operations with signed numbers, solving multi-step equations and inequalities, the foundations for functional relationships, two- variable statistics, and the majority of the geometry content that is pre-requisite to HS geometry.• Students are automatically part of the school’s acceleration denominator once they take Algebra 1. There is not another course option for 8th grade once students take Algebra 1 in 7th grade.

8th Grade Course: M/J Grade 8 Pre-Algebra (1205070) 9th Grade 10th Grade 11th Grade 12th Grade
Option A:
Recommendations: ● Students who scored Level 1 (bucket 1 or 2, especially) on the 8th Grade FSA
Implications: ● Students will not be part of the school’s learning gains nor achievement level components in 9th grade.● Students will not count for learning gains in 10th grade year.
Option B:
OR
Recommendations: ● Students who scored Levels 2-5 on the 8th Grade FSA should be in Algebra 1 in 9th grade.● Levels 2s could be considered for blocking with LAM 1.
Implications: ● Students will still be part of the school’s learning gains and achievement level components in both 9th and 10th grade.
Notes: • LAM 1 should only be offered if there is a strong teacher who will simultaneously address students’ gaps and Algebra 1 content.• LAM 2 is an option but not a recommended course, particularly for students who have already taken LAM 1 in their course sequence.• Students’ post-secondary goals should be taken into account when determining upper level courses. Students going into STEM fields should proceed down a Pre-Calculus
Calculus pathway while students who are not could consider that pathway OR Prob/Stats AP Statistics pathway.

Implications: ● Students will still be part of the school’s learning gains and achievement level components in 9th grade.● Yellow arrows () indicate students moving from a Level 3 course to a Level 2 course.
Notes: • LAM 1 should not be offered to students who have already taken Algebra 1/Honors in middle school.• LAM 1 and LAM 2 are not recommended for students on this accelerated pathway.• Students’ post-secondary goals should be taken into account when determining upper level courses.
