SKOOLLIED / SCHOOL ANTHEM
Vlam van die Laeveld / Flame of the Lowveld
Komposisie / Composition: Mej. S. Cussons – 1976
Verwerk / Revised: Mr. A . Van Zyl - 2016
Hoog teen die helling triomfantlik
Daar troon die vlam van ons Laeveld.
Toonbeeld van moed en van blye oorwinning
Werd is dit meer as roem of as geld.
Like the tree stands with beauty and pride,
Adorns our school with knowledge and insight.
Oh, what a gift from the hand of our Father,
Flame of our Faith, of our Love and of Hope.
Koor / Chorus:
As U wil en ek leef ,
As U wil en ek leef,
Bereik ek steeds die hoogste doel
Waarna ʼn mens kan streef
If Thy will I shall live,
If Thy will I shall live,
We will with Passion in this Flame
Let knowledge revive.

Vlammielied / Vlammie-song
© 2016 Words and Music by Anton van Zyl
Verse:
Daar is 'n vlam,
'n Vlam wat brand.
Hy brand van hier,
Regdeur die land.
Daar is 'n vuur,
'n Vuur wat gloei.
Helderblou vlam,
Wat ons laat groei
Chorus:
There is a flame,
That burns with pride.
In Vlammies' hearts,
We cannot hide.
We are the Vlammies,
Standing tall,
Standing together,
One for all!
Bridge:
As U wil en ek leef,
As U wil en ek leef.
If Thy will I shall live,
If Thy will I shall live.
Chorus:
There is a flame,
That burns with pride.
In Vlammies' hearts,
We cannot hide.
We are the Vlammies,
Standing tall,
Standing together,
One for all.

VLAMMIE SE GEBED / VLAMMIE PRAYER
As I am called to duty, dear God however pure our flame may rage... Grant us courage to take up the calling to serve those in need. Humble us to embrace the little things, to serve with dedication, let us honour and not hate.
Verskerp ons bewustheid om die dag
se uitdagings te ontmoet,
om te arbei met toegewydheid en effektiwiteit
Steek ons vuur aan,
sodat ons U roeping kan oordra.
Help us to give the best of us, to guard our friend and neighbour and protect their soul.
En… indien U dit so behaag
en ons wel sukses bereik;
Seën ons met U beskermende hand
oor ons Bergvlamfamilie uitgestrek, een en elk
AMEN

Hoërskool Bergvlam
Symbols and History
PRIDE BEGETS PRIDE: “We, as the school, continually have to strive to maintain the unique identity which will engender pride in the learners, parents and educators - one which makes us stand head and shoulder above any of the surrounding schools. The colour and style of the uniform should never change as it represents the pride and values to which we ascribe. “ Y. Engelbrecht (Member of the Parent Committee -1974)
NAME: The name “BERGVLAM” was chosen on 13 January 1975 and the learners are known far and wide as “VLAMMIES”.
SCHOOL COLOURS: On 22 October 1974 a unanimous decision was made that the primary colour must be a deep turquoise. The colour turquoise strengthens communication between the heart and the spoken word, presenting itself as a friendly colour in balance with emotion and stability. It radiates peace, instils calm, tranquillity and growth through uplifting energy. It recharges alertness and decision-making, influencing rather than dictating, allowing for creativity, sensitivity and spiritual growth and in doing so, it develops responsible self-esteem with the emphasis on unconditional support, uncluttered observation and a positive and non-discriminative perception. Secondary colours are red; royal blue, navy blue and white.
MOTTO: It was decided on 6 September 1977 that the school motto will be: ”As U wil en ek leef ”, which is a reference to the Bible verse, James 4:15, which Rev. Francois Lessing used in an assembly opening.
THE SCHOOL BADGE:
The school badge was designed by Mr Kobus Möller (the art teacher at that time) and was approved on 6 September 1977 and officially put to use in that year.
In the center is the flower of the common “Koraalboom” (Erythrina lysistemon) on a branch, within a shield and a turquoise background. The Gold laurel wreath was added in 2020.
SYMBOLS:
A “koraalboom” (popularly named a Bergvlam) is used traditionally by the Zulus as
a flower which symbolises royalty. The tree, which is a very strong variety and is
easy to grow, was adopted, as a symbol which depicts the vision of Hoërskool
Bergvlam. It symbolised the new school which had to grow quickly to become “The
8
FLAME” and pride of the Lowveld. As an exceptional tree, unique to the Lowveld,
the flower is bright red and resembles a flame. In the same way, Bergvlam has
grown with fire and passion, and is recognisable by all through the dynamic impact
it has made and is still making. The Christian character of Bergvlam is also part of
the school’s heraldry.
SCHOOL PRAYER:
The school prayer was first implemented in 2015 and has been used as official
prayer at all formal functions since.
SCHOOL SONG: The school song “VLAM VAN DIE LAEVELD” was written and composed in 1976 by Miss Stevie Cussons, a composer and libretto writer.
The school song was revised in 2016 by Anton van Zyl, an alumnus of Bergvlam. (Matriculated in 1993).
VLAMMIE SONG: The Vlammie song was composed and written in 2016 by Anton van Zyl, an alumnus of Bergvlam. (Matriculated in 1993).
LANDMARKS:
Grootboom and Oom Boom
The two enormous paperbark thorn trees (Acacia sieberiana) are well known and
well-loved landmarks. The tree nearest to the hall was given the name
“GROOTBOOM” in 2005 and the other one was named “OOM BOOM”. These
trees, which are situated in the middle of the school grounds, stand as silent
testimonies to the many activities which take place annually under their branches.
Directional pointers
At Bergvlam we try to live according to these pointers. We are reminded of how a true Vlammie should live. These are strategically scattered on the school ground to point us in the direction we should go.
Prayer crosses
A family is centred on what they mean to one another. Even if we are not constantly in the presence of our family, we can and have to pray for one another. Prayer crosses are reminders of who our family consist of and for whom we have to say a prayer. MacVlammie and Vlammie Boutique

As VLAMMIE I will stand PROUD with gratitude, conscious of the opportunities past and present, eagerly committed to face challenges yet to come.

returned.” To a VLAMMIE there is no greater honour than the RESPECT and trust shown by a
fellow VLAMMIE. GR 10:
“INTEGRITY is knowing the honourable choice to be made … and then executing that choice.”
As a VLAMMIE, I will always strive to do the honourable as it is the right thing to do, even in the absence of others.
GR 11: “Greatness comes to those with RESPONSIBILITY.”
As a VLAMMIE, I will not seek to escape the RESPONSIBILITIES of tomorrow by evading them today.
GR 12: “I am, because we are.”
As a true VLAMMIE, I acknowledge that my success is our success - rooted by equal measure - a direct result of shared passion, input given and mutual achievement.
VALUE FLAGS
The Bergvlam family arise from different backgrounds and households. As blended family we have to build a future together. The best foundation to build on is a sound and sturdy foundation. We, at Bergvlam, base the future on a healthy respect for yourself and for the persons you encounter in life. Each and every one has to take up the responsibility to do what is expected of him/her. Live with integrity at all times to ensure pride which is treated humbly. It is of the utmost importance to care for one another according to the Ubuntu principle. Together we can build a bright future.
