Welcome to our Autumn 2019 brochure outlining our forthcoming tours for 2020.

Barely a day goes by when Brexit escapes all the media headlines and the uncertainty remains prevalent!

Should you fancy escaping this for a few days, maybe consider joining us for an overseas tour, travelling with fellow farmers to experience farming in a different part of the world – a truly unique way to see another country!

Travelling to EU countries post Brexit may create doubt for some, but many of us are ‘young enough’ to remember the time before the UK was a member of the EU. It did not stop us travelling then and any future changes are unlikely to limit the opportunity we currently enjoy.

The brochure offers some different, but enjoyable, EU destinations that we have not offered for some years. It is time to explore them again to see how the agriculture has changed with a developed membership of the EU.

By visiting these two South American countries, you will have very different experiences of the agricultural riches.

Our tour will start in Santiago, Chile and heads south with farm visits in the Temuco, Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt regions. Along the way we will explore dairy, vegetables, beef, table and wine grapes, stone fruits, llamas and alpacas before crossing the Andes into Argentina for a 3 night stay in Bariloche.

From there, take a flight to Buenos Aires to explore arable and cattle farms in the Tandil and Lobos regions, plus the famous Liniers Cattle Market and finally a traditional Tango Show dinner.

Set between Nicaragua in the north and Panama in the south, Costa Rica is known as ‘Switzerland of Central America’ due to its comfortable lifestyle and natural beauty. It has been ranked as one of the ‘greenest countries in the world’.

Take in an abundance of wildlife which is astounding and varied, including crocodiles, iguanas, monkeys, exotic bird and butterflies. Coffee, bananas and pineapples are the main exports grown by Ticos so we will visit farms producing those as well as sugarcane, avocado, dairy and a fish project.

The people of Costa Rica recognise the small piece of paradise in which they live and it is reflected in the greeting they give “pura vida” – pure life. Join us as we experience this wonderful country!

New Zealand is one of the most picturesque and photogenic places on earth. The country showcases stunning and diverse natural beauty and you will see some of the very best of New Zealand’s agriculture.

This tour takes in both the north and south islands beginning with a visit to a dairy farm and lakeside Rotorua to experience the Maori culture before visiting Agrodome for a sheep-shearing and sheep-dog demonstration. Continue south to visit a deer farm, a sheep farm, a vineyard, a high country station producing sheep, beef cattle and deer.

On the way, take in beautiful sites including Lake Taupo, the capital city of Wellington and the ‘Garden City’ that is Christchurch.

Just south of the Equator, Tanzania is huge and known best for its vast Serengeti plains with abundant wildlife and great wildebeest migrations.

Agriculture is the main part of Tanzania’s economy and boasts over 44 million hectares of arable land but with only 33% of this in cultivation.

This tour will visit the north east areas of Tanzania and combine a number of productive farm visits, including arable and livestock, with the wildlife haven of the Ngorongoro Crater and big five game viewing in the Serengeti National Park, including lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest and rhino.

Join us on our 5th tour to the beautiful island of Mauritius which will surprise and delight visitors.

Set in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar, where French and English are both widely spoken. There is a pleasant all year round climate with plenty of sunshine and occasional short showers. Stay in excellent beach hotels with a chance to relax, combined with the opportunity to explore this popular island. Our tour includes technical visits that cover sugar cane, citrus and soft fruits, a small livestock enterprise, flowers for export and rice; a main part of the Mauritians diet. In addition, visit a flour mill, a research centre, a protected island to see giant tortoises and fruit bats and take a quad bike or buggy through a nature reserve where you may be lucky enough to see the exotic birds and deer. The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates, the most well-known of which are Abu Dhabi and Dubai, established in 1971.

Arrive into Dubai, the city with the highest building in the world and enjoy a visit to Miracle Garden, the worlds biggest flower garden. Continue to visit an oasis in the desert where we will see the traditional farming techniques with hydroponics and watering.

The hotels are 4* and 5* surrounded by gardens with pools to relax in the afternoon which is usual in the UAE when the temperature is at its highest.

In addition, visit a camel market, an Arabian horse stud farm, a fish market and a national dairy farm with 600 Holstein-Freisian and 1000 goats. With such a variety of visits, the UAE promises to be a very different and interesting trip.

Peru in western South America, extends for 1,500 miles along the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by Ecuador in the north, Bolivia and Brazil in the east and Chile in the south.

Agricultural production is split into 2 entities. There are large private estates enjoying huge production capacity and traditional small farming, producing just enough for the family to live on. Our tour will explore the farming economy with visits to fruits, cereals, coffee, wine, cocoa, vegetables and livestock.

In addition, we will see the wonders of the Inca Empire, see Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca. With a spectacular journey across the top of the Andes Mountain range and time in the capital Lima, the tour offers the very best of Peru.

Italy is one of the most exciting destination in the world, full of history, culture, character and spectacular scenery.

Join us as we explore northern Italy with technical visits to a buffalo farm with cheese factory, a donkey farm producing milk for skin creams, fruit farm, oil mill, beef operation and vineyards with tasting!

In addition, enjoy guided walking tours and free time to explore some of Italy’s most beautiful towns with opportunity to visit the Ferrari museum, Leaning Tower of Pisa and participate in a Florence cooking class. Our tour to these Italian regions are sure to be an unforgettable experience for many.

For our next annual Spring Gathering, we have chosen Suffolk. Suffolk is well known for its Trinity, made up of three animals: The Suffolk Punch horse, the Red Poll cattle and the Suffolk Sheep and we are planning to include visits to all three.This popular tour will include a welcome and farewell dinner with wine, a mix of farm and touristic visits including a vineyard and the pretty town of Lavenham. Whilst enjoying a four night stay in a luxury golf & spa hotel owned by a farming family.

ALBANIA & GREECEAPR / MAY 2020

Enjoy Albania, a new tour destination and contrast with Greece, a longstanding EU member.

Starting in Albania, we will explore the mountains of the border country where dairy cheese, olives and wine are grown. Continuing north to Tirana, the capital, we will see the Adriatic coast, explore the historical sites of the bronze age and enjoy a traditional dance show. Albanian agriculture visits will also include sheep, goats and wool production.

Crossing the border into Greece we will see the northern plains which offer rich fertile land where cereal crops, tobacco, cotton and pulses are grown on large farming operations. It also produces wines and the famous Ouzo drink. The region contrasts sharply with most of Greece, which is mountainous with pasture, scrub and forests, making farming a challenge and keeping farms small.

South Africa is a land of striking contrasts from the white beaches and green vineyards to lush green hills and the world famous game reserves. Add to this the friendly welcome plus the variety of forestry and agriculture, South Africa is a must visit destination.

Meet with local farmers and enjoy their generous hospitality on this fantastic tour which showcases the best of the country’s agriculture and wildlife, including Nguni cattle, maize fields and a day at NAMPO, one of the worlds largest agricultural field days.

The tour will travel from the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, west and then north to Latvia and its capital, Riga.On the way the visits will include dairy, sheep, forestry, cereals, flower production, vegetables, beef, renewable energy and machinery operations.

Romania is still a country steeped in tradition. On the streets you will see the locals travelling by horse and cart alongside their home produced Dacia cars.

Agriculture has benefited from a membership of the EU, with subsidy providing opportunity for the farming community to prosper. Our tour will explore the evolution of this remarkable country. Still poor by comparison to the UK, it offers an interesting history and a national identity that grows in confidence as economic strength returns.

Flying into Bucharest we will enjoy a guided tour of the capital before embarking on a tour for 6 days that will explore the agricultural economy and take in the medieval past. Visiting a range of farming operations that will include dairy, cereal production, beef, sheep, and wine production. Post-communist rule the cost of land was very low, which encouraged a lot of immigration from other European countries to set up farming operations and land that was good for growing crops. We will also include a visit to one of those farm owners as part of the programme. Finally, we will explore the region of Transylvania made famous by the Bram Stoker novels including visiting the Castle of Count Dracula.

Despite Shetland’s remoteness from the mainland of Scotland, the islands have a vibrant economy which is led by the seafood industry. Closely followed by the oil industry and agriculture coming in third with livestock the most significant sector. Excellent grazing provide for sheep, beef and dairy operations.
