Performance, Progress, Hope

As we continue to celebrate The Bushnell’s 90th

anniversary, we want to recognize the noteworthy

piece of art directly above you. Created by Barry Faulkner

and a staff of Prix de Rome painters, the mural, which cost $50,000 to create, was installed in 1930. In today’s money that’s over $700,000. Aptly named Drama, the mural features the Muse of Drama as its centerpiece. Surrounding her are representations of performance, progress, and hope in the form of ancient mythological constellations to the 20th century representations of skyscrapers and airplanes. It is the largest hand-painted ceiling mural in the United States.

During those difficult times, hope and belief in progress propelled The Bushnell forward. We continue that spirit by pushing the limits of innovation and creativity in our programming and events, from thematic performances and extraordinary cultural experiences to cutting-edge visual technology and our digital learning initiatives.

These are just a few of the programs we celebrate and support at Ovations 2020, our annual fundraising gala on March 7. Come join us for STARS: 90 Years of The Bushnell. To learn more visit bushnell.org/ovations or call 860-987-6029.

It’s in the spirit of progress and the search for knowledge that we offer programming that reflects our diverse community. In the coming weeks, guests can feel the rhythm with international Latin pop star Prince Royce, journey to ancient Egypt with National Geographic’s Kara Cooney, or enjoy a memorable and hilarious Evening with David Sedaris. There’s an experience for everyone, including workshops, movie screenings, and performances that have been designed for children or adults diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder or other sensitivity issues.

Visit bushnell.org for more information on these shows and mark your calendars for March 30 when we announce the 2020–2021 Broadway season!

But we’re not the only ones celebrating a milestone, Jesus Christ Superstar marks its 50th anniversary this year! The 1970 rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice gives audiences a concert-like vibe and a unique, theatrical experience. We hope you enjoy this iconic show and we thank you for your continued support at The Bushnell.

Sincerely,

David R. Fay

TIM RICE (Lyrics) has worked in music, theatre and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession—musical theatre. Their first collaboration (lyrics by Tim, music by Andrew) was an unsuccessful show based on the life of Dr. Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes of Us. Their next three works together were much more successful—Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has since worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess) and most recently, Stuart Brayson (From Here to Eternity). A new production of From Here to Eternity made its début at the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre, New York, in June 2016, and played in the Fall of 2017 at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine. In December 2016 selections from the score were performed at three official events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Further U.S. productions are in the works. In March 2017, two films with new Tim Rice material were released. Disney’s fresh interpretation of Beauty and the Beast, directed by Bill Condon, features three new songs written with Alan Menken, and the latest Roger Goldby film, Time of Their Lives, starring Joan Collins and Pauline Collins, features Morty and Me, a song written with Pete Hobbs, sung by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Tim is also an executive producer of the latter movie. He formed his own cricket team in 1973 and was President of MCC in 2002. He is a regular broadcaster/presenter on BBC Radio 2, drawing on his extensive knowledge of the history of popular music since Elvis was a lad. He has won several awards*, mainly for the wrong thing or for simply turning up.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Music) is the composer of some of the world’s best known musicals including Cats, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera (which celebrates its 30th anniversary on Broadway this year) and Sunset Boulevard. When Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock—The Musical, Cats and Phantom on Broadway in February 2017 he became the only person to equal the record set in 1953 by Rodgers and Hammerstein with four shows running concurrently. As well as The Phantom Of The Opera and Cats his productions include the groundbreaking Bombay Dreams which introduced the double Oscar winning Bollywood composer AR Rahman to the Western stage. His awards, both as composer and producer, include seven Tonys, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, a BASCA Fellowship, the Kennedy Center Honor and a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, his setting of the Latin Requiem mass which contains one of his best known compositions, Pie Jesu. He owns seven London theatres including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and the London Palladium. He was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 1992 and created a life peer in 1997. He is passionate about the importance of music in education and the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has become one of Britain’s leading charities supporting the arts and music. In 2016 the Foundation funded a major new national initiative which endowed the American Theatre Wing with a $1.3 million, three-year grant to support theatre education opportunities for underserved young people and public schools across the U.S. To mark his 70th birthday his autobiography Unmasked was published by HarperCollins in March.

THE BUSHNELL

SERVICESThe Bushnell Box Office The Bushnell Box Office is open Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Sunday beginning at noon (on Bushnell-ticketed performance days only). The Box Office remains open 30 minutes after curtain for all performances. Telephone (860) 987-5900, Fax (860) 987-6080. A telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD/TTY) can be used to communicate with The Bushnell Box Office by calling (860) 987-6097. Tickets, news and information are also available online at www.bushnell.org 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Parking Secure and well-lighted parking is available in the State of Connecticut parking lots along Capitol Avenue. Please be aware that Accessible Parking adjustments have been made due to construction in the area. Please look for prominently displayed signage off of Capitol Avenue that will direct patrons displaying a valid accessible parking permit to spaces. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, valet services are available for most evening and weekend performances (excluding weekday matinees) at a cost of $12 per vehicle. The valet parking service is located on Capitol Avenue.

Accessibility The Bushnell is equipped with ramps, restrooms, elevators and seating areas that can accommodate patrons with disabilities. When ordering your tickets, be sure to tell

the Box Office of any special requirements. Access guides are available at the Customer Relations Desk.

Patron Accessibility Services sponsored by:

Persons who are Hearing-Impaired Infrared (ILS) headsets and neck induction loops are available at the Customer Relations Desk to assist with sound amplification and clarity. A driver’s license or other form of photo ID must be presented.

Behind the Scenes at The Bushnell Bushnell tours are given by appointment. Please call (860) 987-6003 to schedule a tour.

Café Visit our café for a quick bite before the show. The café features soups, salads, sandwiches, pastries and more. The café is open one hour prior to most shows.

In Case of an Emergency Exits are indicated by signs located above the theater entrances. For your safety, please check the location of the exit nearest your seat. In the event of an evacuation, Bushnell staff and volunteers are available to assist you.

Disruptive Behavior Any patron who poses a health or sanitary risk; disturbs other patrons; causes damage to The Bushnell property; or does not cooperate with staff and security personnel will be asked to leave the venue.

Electronic Devices Cellular phones, pagers and other electronic devices should be silenced prior to entering the theater. Text messaging and the use of other devices that cause unnecessary light are prohibited in the theater.

Late Arrival Late seating will be at the discretion of the production company, and requires that late audience members wait to enter the theater until a designated break in the performance. For your convenience, closed circuit televisions are located in the lobbies.

End of Performance For your safety and the safety of your fellow patrons, please do not leave your seat until the house lights have been turned on. Not only is it dark, but it is inconsiderate to others, including the performers.

If you have any additional questions or comments regarding Bushnell services, please contact Customer Relations and Patron Feedback at (860) 987-6059.
