The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

    December 2627, 2020

    From Fr. Anthony Ligato

    Merry Christmas

We have a Family in Heaven

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

We are in the midst of celebrating Christmas, today is the third

day of the octave of Christmas; there are eight days total from

Christmas Day to the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God

which we celebrate on New Year’s Day. Christmas is not a one

day celebration but rather a celebration of the season which

reaches to the Solemnity of the Epiphany on January 3, 2021.

Between Christmas and Mary, the Mother of God there is a Sun-

day and on that Sunday after Christmas we celebrate The Holy

Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. On this day we are reminded

of the importance of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

and their contribution to Salvation. Mary and Joseph raise the Son

of God to adulthood and their love and concern helped him to be

obedient to his Heavenly Father's will.

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph reminds us of the

importance of the family in the modem age and its role in raising

children to adulthood so that they can be faithful, loving, caring

and responsible adults following the example of our Savior Jesus

Christ. But the family today is under a great deal of stress not on-

ly from the pandemic but also from divorce, single parent house-

holds and children being raised without fathers being present in

their lives. The family is in need of some divine intervention. The

intervention needs to start with us as adults; we need to realize

that the choices and decisions we make affect the lives of our

children. The wellbeing and protection of our children should

always be our first priority. Joseph was called upon to protect the

infant Jesus and the Blessed Mother and he did this by listening

to the Angel of the Lord. The angel of the Lord appeared to Jo-

seph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother,

flee to Egypt; Herod is going to search for the child to destroy

him." (Matthew 2:1314) Joseph understood that his first respon-

sibility was to the child Jesus and the Blessed Mother.

So often, we put our own needs and wants before others but as

faithful believers in Jesus Christ we are reminded through the

example of our Blessed Mother Mary and St. Joseph that we are

to respond to God's call and by doing so we put God first and

God's people first as well; by doing so our Heavenly Father is

able to look after our wellbeing and protection. By being open to

God in our lives we are transformed, just as Mary was trans-

formed by the angel Gabriel who came to her and told her she

was to bear a Son and just as Joseph was transformed when the

angel of the Lord came to him in a dream and told him to take

Mary into his home and protect her and the unborn child. That

    unborn child transformed the world.

Both Mary and Joseph received confirmation of the mes-

sages they received from the Angel of the Lord when

they brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem

as proscribed by the law of Moses, “Every male that

opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to

offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young

pigeons, in accordance with the dictates in the law of the

Lord.” (Luke: 34). They encountered two people, Sime-

on and Anna, who would confirm their messages from

the Lord. The law itself requires two witnesses to confirm

that what has happened has truly occurred. “Now there

was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This

man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation

of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.” (Luke 2:22

    25) It would be the Spirit that gives confirmation through

Simeon that the message both Mary and Joseph received

was true. The prophetic message Simeon gives to Mary

and Joseph would require of them faith and courage,

“And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, behold, this

child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel,

and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you your-

self a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many

hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:3435)

Mary is like any Mother and Joseph, as Our Lord’ adop-

tive Father, is like any Father. They want the best for

their child. This message required of them both to be par-

ents who relied on their faith and to be people of prayer

who actively participated in the practicing of their faith,

their observance of the Torah and Temple liturgies such

as the Presentation of the Lord. Parents today are encour-

aged to follow their example to be people of faith and to

pass on that faith. To be people of prayer who rely on the

Lord and to be people who actively participate in their

faith by observing and keeping holy the sabbath and

teaching their children to keep holy the Sabbath. The Ho-

ly Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph are not simply an

unattainable example of an ideal family, rather they are a

    model for all Christian families.

    Yours in Christ,

    Fr. Anthony
