O n a day when Chinese President Xi Jinping asked his troops to “prepare for war”, India on Thursday categorically rejected Beijing’s objection to opening of 44 bridges in bor- der areas, including Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, saying China has no locus standi to comment on India’s internal matters. The strong assertion by the Ministry of External Affairs came here two days after Zhao Lijian, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, in Beijing had called border infrastruc- ture development “the root cause for tension between the two sides” and said neither country should take action that might escalate tensions. India’s rebuttal also came against the backdrop of con- tinuing tension at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and Jinping asking his troops to “prepare for war” according to state news agency Xinhua. “Troops should “maintain a state of high alert... Put all (your) minds and energy into preparing for war,” China’s State news agency Xinhua quoted Xi Jinping as saying. Troops should be “absolutely loyal, absolutely pure, and absolutely reliable”, the Chinese President said dur- ing his visit to Marine corps of PLA in Chaozhou City. Sources said the President’s remarks were “not specifically directed at India,” even though it came amid the border dispute in Ladakh. MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava also brushed aside China’s remark saying it does not recognise the Ladakh Union Territory. This claim by the Chinese spokesperson came a day after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday inaugurated 44 permanent bridges, includ- ing eight in Ladakh and the same number in Arunachal Pradesh. These bridges will significantly bolster the logistical supplies to the troops deployed on the LAC facing China and the LoC with Pakistan. Countering Beijing’s con- tention, Srivastava made it amply clear here on Thursday that “the Union Territories of Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir have been, are and will remain an integral part of India”. Maintaining that China has no locus standi to comment on internal matters of India, he also said, “Our position on Arunachal Pradesh has been made clear several times. Arunachal Pradesh is an inte- gral and inalienable part of India. This fact has also been clearly conveyed to the Chinese side on several occasions, including at the highest level.” Elaborating on India’s stand, the spokesperson also said New Delhi hopes that “countries will not comment on India’s internal matters, as much as they expect the same of others”. The Chinese spokesper- son had questioned the status of Ladakh and said, “First I want to make it clear that China does not recognise the Ladakh Union Territory ille- gally set up by the Indian side and Arunachal Pradesh. We stand against the development of infrastructure facilities aimed at military contention along the border area,” the Chinese spokesperson had said. The decision to float this new alliance was taken at a cru- cial meeting convened by Farooq Abdullah at his resi- dence in Srinagar. Addressing the media soon after the meeting, Abdullah, flanked by Mehbooba, Omar Abdullah, CPI(M) leader MY Tarigami, People’s Conference chief Sajjad Lone, JKPM leader Javaid Mustafa Mir and ANC leader Muzaffar Shah said that the resolution passed on August 4 last year by the main- stream political parties in the valley has been named as “Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration”. He said the facility to get tested regu- larly and speedily at a low cost must be available to all at the earliest. In the last six months since the Covid-19 expanded its ten- tacles, the ICMR has conduct- ed two sero-surveys nation- wide. The first countrywide sero survey (conducted between May 11 and June 4) showed overall infection preva- lence to be 0.73 per cent while the second one showed that one in every 15 individuals, or 6.6 per cent, of people above the age of 10 years in India, have been exposed to Sars- Cov2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease (Covid- 19), till August. Chairing a high-level meet- ing to review the country’s research and vaccine deploy- ment ecosystem against the Covid-19 pandemic, including testing technologies, contact tracing, drugs and therapeutics, the PM also called for contin- ued vigilance and a high state of preparedness against the coronavirus pandemic, the PMO said in a statement. Allaying the apprehension, a bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde, said “Let the high court deal with it. We are here if there is any problem.” Besides Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, the hearing saw battery of senior advocates like Harish Salve, Indira Jaising and Siddharth Luthra appear- ing for various parties. There were other lawyers who wanted to argue but the SC said, “We don’t need assis- tance of the whole world.” The hearing also witnessed deliberations that in no case the victim’s identity be disclosed and her family members and witnesses be given full securi- ty and protection. The lawyer, appearing for the victim’s family, demanded that the proceedings of the case be shifted out of Uttar Pradesh to a court in the Delhi. The apprehension of not having the fair trial in the State was also raised by activist- lawyer Indira Jaising. WEAVERS AGAIN GOON STRIKE: Blaming thestate government for disobey-ing its promise, the weaversonce again went on an indefi-nite strike on Thursday reiter-ating their demand of therestoration of the monthly flatrate or fixed rate electricity bill.

When the weavers hadgone on strike by suspendingall sorts of weaving in themonth of August, the stategovernment had assured thatthe electricity tariff by themonth of July would becharged from them at the oldflat rate system. And after theassurance by the government, the weavers had called off thestrike but more than twomonths have passed, the gov-ernment did not take any ini-tiative to materialise itspromise, the agitated weaverssaid adding, so, they wouldhave to go on an indefinitestrike once again as they haveno option except it. Theweavers also staged a protest inBadi Bazar and other areas bysuspending all sorts of weaving.

As per new arrangement, the state government is realis-ing the electricity tariff fromthe powerloom weavers as perelectricity meters withdraw-ing the old flat rate subsidy. As

per the old flat rate subsidy sys-tem, the weavers were to pay 145 for each powerloom butunder the new arrangement, they will have to pay per unitelectricity every month.

If the government realisesthat 145 monthly bill for eachpowerloom was very little, itcould increase it and they areready to pay as per but the sub-sidized rate should continue tosurvive the weaving, they saidand reiterated their demand ofthe restoration of the old flatrate system. Akhtar and manyothers joined the protest inBadi Bazar.

In a good news particularlyfor the field of chemical edu-cation, Dr Vishal Mishra,Assistant Professor, School ofBio-Chemical Engineering,Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), Banaras HinduUniversity (BHU) has made aninvention of the ‘Ultra-violet(UV) fluorescent ink’ fromwaste bacterial culture media. This work has been filed for theIndian patent as it is beneficialfor the education system andfighting against the counterfeit-ing market.

Every waste has somepotential but it gets spoiled use-lessly all around the world dueto the lack of knowledge andawareness about its potentialbenefits. The bacterial culture

media are very common low-cost reagents but are widelyused in biochemistry, molecu-lar and microbiology labs tosupport the growth of microor-ganisms, Dr Mishra informed.

Using the ‘Green chem-istry’ approach we have suc-ceeded in inventing ultra-vio-let (UV) fluorescent ink fromwaste bacterial culture media,he informed and adds, ‘Byusing very easy three steps ofthe laboratory procedures, wehave recycled the waste bacte-rial culture media for makingUV fluorescent ink’.

‘When this ink is used onpaper, it is not visible in day-light but becomes clearly visi-ble when exposed to a certainwavelength of the UV light dueto the blue fluorescence of theink. Even low-cost, handheld,

battery operated UV lamps oflow power (4 watt) can be usedto see this hidden ink on thepaper. This UV fluorescentink can be used in high schoolscience practical and scienceexhibitions for various class-room demonstrations in thefield of chemical education”, DrMishra informed further.

This demonstrations basedwork has got accepted in theJournal of ChemicalEducations, ACS and soon itwill be available online afterpublication. In our lab, furtherresearch is going on where weare working on another appli-cation as security ink in the tagsof various valuable items, onthe bank cheques, and certifi-cates, etc to authenticate theoriginality of the product, hesays.

Recycling the huge amountof waste bacterial media gener-ated from the various laborato-ries and industries will producethe most inexpensive UV flu-orescent material in the bulk.Through such waste recyclingat a broader-scale, we can savethe environment from chemi-cal pollution. From teachingmaterial to market products(anti-counterfeiting technolo-gy) this ink has various appli-cations and advantages likeinexpensive, easily availableand non-toxic material, heinformed.

This work has been filedfor Indian patent. This workwill have a positive impact onhumanity due to its benefits tothe education system and fight-ing against the counterfeitingmarket, Dr Mishra claimed.

It was a lacklustre reopeningof multiplexes, cineflexes andcinema halls as only a few cinelovers turned out there towatch the movies on bigscreens. Many of the lovers arewaiting anxiously since longbut even after the reopening oftheatres, they were not seen inhurry. There were many rea-sons for this thin attendanceand the biggest one was theabsence of any new releases ofBollywood/ Hollywoodmovies. Though many multi-plexes are hopeful that thenumber of cine fans wouldincrease from Friday as inIndia, majority of Bollywoodmovies are released on the daybut yet they are not very enthu-siastic because the impacts ofworldwide coronavirus pan-demic was also seen on the pro-duction of movies and evensome films which are ready fortheir releases, their producersand distributors are doubtful ofgetting favourable conditionsand the same may financiallyhit them badly.

However, they feel that ifthe situation continues improv-ing, the condition will bechanged after a couple of dayswhen the festive season startswith the beginning of ShardiyaNavratra.

Many are hopeful that bythe festival of Deepawali, thecinema halls would start seeingsimilar enthusiasm among thefans as it was seen prior toMarch 22 last. Though the

nationwide lockdown wasimposed on March 25, likesome cities of UP, the lockdownin Varanasi began since March22, the day which was observedas ‘Janata Curfew’.

Many are doubtful becausethey feel that in absence ofgood new movies and COVID-19 restrictions, it will takesome more months in revivalof the condition. After gettingthe information from the state

government regarding reopen-ing of the halls from October15, most of multiplexes andothers has started their prepa-rations by making changes inseating arrangements in view tomaintain social distancing. Asper the guidelines, these mul-tiplexes and others can only beopened with maximum 50 percent tickets sale.

In connection with thereopening, most of the hallshave started their preparationsof making seating arrange-ments as per the guidelines andsanitising the entire premisesbut in absence of new movies, they just reopened by screen-ing some old movies.

In absence of fans, manyhave decided to curtail thenumber of shows as it will taketime when the fans wouldunderstand all the guidelinesincluding only online ticketbooking, compulsory wearingof masks, thermal scanning, sale of only packed food, instal-lation of sanitiser tunnels andrecording of names, addressesand mobile numbers of allfans in view to contact tracingetc.
