Benefice Pastoral Care Team
In the benefice we have a small team, comprising the Vicar, the
two Readers and three Pastoral Assistants, which supports the
key areas of pastoral care on behalf of the Church across our
communi9es. Pastoral Assistants are authorised ministers, who
have undertaken some training in the diocese and are
commissioned for their work in their parishes.
Members of the team are available to visit the elderly and in-
firm, those who are alone, those finding life difficult. They also visit those unable to
a2end
services at one of our churches to give Communion at home. Following significant loss or
bereavement, the team is able to give ongoing support.
If you, or someone you know, would like a visit from one of the pastoral care team,
please contact any member of the team using the details on the back of the magazine.

Welcome to our February Parish News
Dear friends,
Happy New Year! With the double issue
magazine for December and January, it is
only now that I can offer you gree9ngs as we
move into the new ‘twen9es’. What will this
year and the coming decade have in store
for us? Con9nuing challenges and
uncertain9es to be sure!
Poli9cally, it can seem hard to remember
that we had a general elec9on only a few
weeks ago in December. Now we are going
to face the reality of Brexit and the next
phase of the process as we nego9ate new
rela9onships with our European neighbours
and other countries around the world.
Historically, we have just observed
Holocaust Memorial Day on the 75th
anniversary of the libera9on of Auschwitz-
Birkenau. Tragically, the world remains a
gravely violent place. Some years ago, Jean
Vanier, founder of the L'Arche communi9es,
commented that the world faces two major
problems. One is the increasing amount of
violence at every level of society; the other
is the increasing gap between the rich and
the poor (which is, I would suggest, another
form of violence).
Ecologically, there is increasing despera9on
amongst many that we are going to be too
late to address the reality of climate change.
As Glasgow prepares to host the next United
Na9ons Climate Change Conference in
November, will the many pledges and
promises actually start to become reali9es?
As we journeyed through the Christmas
and Epiphany seasons the message that we
reflected on is that the Child whose birth we
celebrate is indeed the Son of God who
came to change the world, to change each
one of us. Jesus is the One whose message
can transform hearts and minds.
Bishop Michael Curry, the Presiding Bishop
of the Episcopal Church, said: “This child
who was born of Mary
changes everything. This child
born in a manger, wrapped in
swaddling clothes changes
how we live. And this Jesus,
born into a world torn by
strife and hatred and division
and pain and poverty, this child is born anew
wherever men and women say, ‘I’ll follow
Him. I’ll follow Him as my Saviour. I’ll follow
Him as my Lord.’”
What does it mean to follow Jesus as
Saviour, as Lord, in a world torn by our
human violence? Surely it must mean that
we commit ourselves to live Jesus-like lives
of love, compassion, goodness, forgiveness,
self-sacrifice. This is the way of beauty that
will change and save the world.
Pope Francis, wri9ng to mark World Peace
Day on 1st
January, warns that con9nued
escala9ng conflicts could lead to the physical
and spiritual death of many people – “if not
of all”. He appeals for a new style of poli9cs
that will build peace through “crea9ve non-
violence”. He writes: “I ask God to help all of
us to cul9vate non-violence in our most
personal thoughts and values. May charity
and non-violence govern how we treat each
other as individuals, within society and in
interna9onal life.”
At the end of February, on Wednesday 26th
,
we observe Ash Wednesday, the start of
Lent. Our focus turns from the Crib to the
Cross as we begin the period of six weeks
when we reflect deeply on the mystery of
our Lord’s death and resurrec9on. Lent is
9me to open our hearts and our minds so
that God may speak to us afresh of God’s
love and forgiveness for us, for all
humankind and for the whole of crea9on.
As we journey on in faith and trust, I wish
you peace and every blessing.
Robin Figg, Vicar

Sayings from the Wisdom of Tradi+on
This love of God is big enough to embrace all of us

News from our churches
The Season of Lent
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on Wednesday 26th February. This is one of the
Principal Feasts in the church calendar and everyone is encouraged to
a2end a service on this day. There will be a Eucharist with Imposi9on of
Ashes at St John’s, Yealand at 9.15am and at St Oswald’s, Warton at
7.30pm.
Lent is a 9me for prayerful reflec9on on the meaning of our Lord’s
Passion. As part of your Lenten discipline why not take part in one or
more of the following ac9vi9es?
Quiet Day at Hyning Monastery on Saturday 7th March, from 10am un9l 3.30pm.
The theme of the day will be ‘Making space for God in Lent’ and will
include two talks by Sister Michaela, the Eucharist and periods of
silence. The cost will be £20 with a cooked lunch or £16 with own
packed lunch. Look out for more informa9on and details of how to
book.
Sta+ons of the Cross. Each of the sta9ons stands for an event that
occurred during Jesus' Passion and death at Calvary on Good Friday. The
service lasts 30 minutes and will take place each Saturday at 9.30am in St
Oswald’s, Warton. All are encouraged to experience this service at least
once during Lent.
Lent Course—Superstar. We will using a 5-session course wri2en by David Wilbourne,
former Assistant Bishop of Llandaff. FiZy years ago Apollo 13 limped back to earth and
Jesus Christ Superstar took the West End by storm. These events raise important
ques9ons about faith and our world which will be explored during the course. It is hoped
that three groups will meet each week; see page 8 for further details.
A book for Lent. Why not commit to taking 9me each day for some devo9onal reading
as we journey through Lent. Here are just three recommenda9ons.
Saying Yes to Life (The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book) by Ruth Valerio.
Valerio works as Global Advocacy and Influencing Director for Tearfund. In this book
she eaves together her prac9cal and theological wisdom in ways that will genuinely
resource the Church.
Walking the Way of the Cross: Prayers and reflec#ons on the biblical Sta#ons of the
Cross by Stephen Co@rell, Paula Gooder and Philip North. This is an innova9ve
approach to the Sta9ons. For each Sta9on there are three short reflec9ons from
complementary angles. (Church House Publishing £9.99)
You Are Mine: Daily Bible readings from Ash Wednesday to Easter Day The BRF Lent
Book) by David Walker. The Bishop of Manchester invites us to join him in the
inves9ga9on of Chris9an belonging; he offers a wise, humane and generous spirituality.
(BRF £8.99)

Junior Church Lent Challenge
Many people give things up for Lent, as a form of fas9ng. We invite you to join us in
turning that idea on its head. Instead of giving something up, we will be giving to those
for whom fas9ng is not a choice but oZen a reality.
Each Sunday in Lent, we are aiming to give an item per family to be donated to
Morecambe Bay Foodbank. To ensure that those dona9ons are appropriate, we will be
contac9ng the foodbank each week to ask what they need. These items will be listed in
the pew sheet and collected the following Sunday.
Dona9ons can either be brought to church on Sunday or leZ in the box in the vicarage
porch during the week. They will be delivered to the foodbank at the beginning of each
week so that they can be used straight away.
Anyone across the Benefice who would like to join us in this challenge would be very
welcome. Please keep an eye open for more informa9on in the pew sheets.

The next Archdeacon of Lancaster
The Venerable David Picken The next Archdeacon of Lancaster, The Venerable David Picken,
joins our Diocese officially on 4th February. Un9l recently, David has
been Archdeacon of Newark in the Diocese of Southwell and
No5ngham. He succeeds the Venerable Michael Everi2, who leZ the
Diocese last summer to become Canon Pastor of Durham Cathedral.
David was born in Hednesford, Staffordshire in 1963 and was
educated locally. In 1984 he graduated with a BA Hons in English Literature and Religious
Studies from London.
The following year David completed a PGCE (teaching qualifica9on) and married Cathy,
also a teacher. AZer a short teaching career David went to Lincoln Theological College to
study for the ordained priesthood.
Speaking about his appointment, David said, “I will be sharing in the work on missional
growth in churches in the diocese; in par9cular with children and young people. I will
also work very closely with the schools in the diocese and will be the Chair of the
Diocesan Board of Educa9on, a role I have fulfilled la2erly here. Taken together, these
are opportuni9es I simply could not resist.”
Speaking about the Diocesan Vision 2026 Healthy Churches Transforming Communi9es
he said: “The Vision provides clear priori9es, through making disciples, being witnesses
and growing leaders for Jesus Christ. I look forward to working with colleagues on the
Bishop’s Leadership Team, and clergy and laity from across the Diocese, to further Vision
2026 work.”
Archdeacon David added: “I am looking forward to ge5ng to know people in parishes
across the County. We have family connec9ons in Lancashire and I’ve been a lifelong fan
of the County Cricket Club. My childhood hero was Clive Lloyd, LCCC and West Indies
Captain.” David also enjoys football and is a Manchester United supporter, but takes a
keen interest in Mansfield Town FC as well.

Lent course — Superstars
The course booklet is wri2en by David Wilbourne who studied Natural
Sciences and Theology at Cambridge. David has been a vicar and
published six books. Having worked with three Archbishops of York, he
went on to serve as Assistant Bishop of Llandaff.
“It’s 1970 – Edward Heath becomes PM, Apollo 13 limps back to earth,
and Jesus Christ Superstar takes the West End by storm, asking daring
ques-ons that gave colour to my former monochrome faith and fired my voca-on. Half a
century on, its message remains just as relevant, and we explore themes from its iconic
lyrics in the 5 sessions of this course”.
Session 1. Who is Jesus? Session 2. Miracles Session 3. The Psalms
Session 4. The Church Session 5. Cross Purposes
Three groups are planned to meet each week as follows:
Tuesdays 10.30am-12noon at the Church Hall, Warton from 3rd March;
Wednesdays 12noon-1.30pm at St Mary’s, Borwick from 4th March (bring a sandwich,
drinks provide);
Fridays 7.15-8.45pm at 63 Hazelmount Drive, Millhead from 6th March.
Please book a place by contac9ng the Vicar (details on back page) or sign the list available
in each of the churches. A minimum of five par9cipants is needed for a group to run.
Faith Matters
This is an informal monthly discussion group with the aim of providing space to explore
the relevance of faith to contemporary issues. The group meets on the 2nd
Tuesday
(usually) of each month at St Mary’s, Borwick. Refreshments are served from 10.45am
and the shared conversa9on begins at 11.00am and we finish at 12 noon. The issues
being discussed in the coming months are:
Exploring Faith and…
11th February Assisted Suicide: does God approve?
10th March Climate change: What can we do?
21st April Easter: what is it all about? (Note: 3rd Tuesday)
~~ All are welcome ~~

St Mary’s 123 - Realising the vision for St Mary’s
It is with great pleasure that we can report the
comple9on of the works at St Mary’s. With
sincere thanks to the main contractors, JT
Construc9on, to the hea9ng engineers, Chris
Bowker, to our architects, HPA Architects, and
others, for all their hard work.
Appropriately, the first service back in the
reordered church building was the Christmas
Day Eucharist, when we rejoiced in the good news of God’s love shown to the world in
Jesus and we delighted in our fellowship as local Chris9ans enjoying the warmth and
space of our new-look building.
The challenge now
facing the District
Church Council, as
well as the local people and others, is to explore how to
make the best use of the enhanced facili9es at St Mary’s;
as a place of worship, peace and spirituality, as well as a
place for fellowship and community ac9vity.
We are delighted that the Bishop of Blackburn will be
coming on Sunday 29th March at 6.00pm for a special
service during which he will dedicate the new facili9es.
We look forward to seeing the church full for this special
occasion; all are very welcome.
Any one who would like to know more or who has any
specific ques9ons is invited to contact Joyce Tombs (on
07768 930070) or the Vicar.

Chari+es supported by St John’s Every year St John’s supports up to three chari9es, usually one local, one na9onal and
one interna9onal. You are invited to nominate the chari9es to be supported this year
either by pu5ng details on the list at the back of church or by email to sally-

chari9es and has decided that those supported last year (Bri9sh Red Cross/Indonesia
Earthquake and Tsunami Appeal, the NSPCC and CancerCare) are not eligible for support
this year without just cause. The PCC will shortlist the sugges9ons at their mee9ng on
February 18 and everyone who a2ends services will be asked to vote to choose the final
three.

St Oswald’s Churchyard—keeping it neat and +dy
In previous magazines we outlined the proposed new policy as agreed by the Warton
PCC for the maintenance of St Oswald’s churchyard with par9cular regard to the
placing of flowers and ornaments at the graves. As these ar9cles explained, the
Parochial Church Council discussed the upkeep of the churchyard in response to a
range of comments made from families who have rela9ves buried in the churchyard,
from general visitors to the churchyard and from those who spend many hours
voluntarily looking aZer the upkeep of the churchyard.
In response to the ar9cles a number of comments were received, some suppor9ng
the proposed new policy and some asking ques9ons about it. The PCC duly discussed
the situa9on again at its mee9ng in November and agreed to amend the proposed
policy such that one bunch/spray of either real or ar9ficial flowers will be permi2ed to
be placed at a grave either in the flower holder within the base of the headstone or in
a small fluted vase which the PCC will provide. With regard to the la2er point the
inten9on is to have box near the waste bins just beyond the church door in which there
will be a supply of vases.
The PCC affirmed its decision that the following will not be permi2ed in the
churchyard:
i. Chippings, pebbles or similar materials and free-standing vases or pots;
ii. Mementoes, windmills, toys or li2le animals, solar lamps or similar;
The PCC agreed that wreaths brought to the funeral may be placed at a grave aZer
the service, but must be removed when the blossoms wither. Remembrance Day
poppies and Christmas wreaths may also be placed at a grave, but these are to be
removed aZer a period of not more than four weeks.
The inten9on of the PCC is always to balance the wishes of families with graves in the
churchyard with the Diocesan Churchyard Regula9ons and the needs of those who look
aZer the churchyard, ensuring that the churchyard can con9nue to be maintained to a
high standard.

From our Schools
INSPIRE a love of learning in God’s world.
through awe and wonder for God’s world we will inspire a true love for learning,
crea+vity, curiosity and imagina+on. Through independent thought and a passion for
the lives of others we will work with our community to care and consider all,
following in the teachings of Christ.
Life at Yealand CE Primary School con9nues to flourish and the children are always out
and about in the local community. Last term Robin Class (Recep9on & KS1) were climbing
at Salt Ayre and it was Swallow Class (KS2) turn for Forest School. All children took part in
the annual Film Fes9val which supported their learning in school.
The school had 2 nomina9ons for the Lancaster & Morecambe Educa9on Awards:
Primary School Pupil of the Year and Educa9on Support award. I am pleased to announce
that Mrs Asquith was awarded Educa9on Support of the Year, we are all very proud of
her achievement.
This term construc9on of the school’s new forest site will begin, with the installa9on of a
canopy and sea9ng area, along with a fire pit and storage shed. This is a very exci9ng
addi9on for the school and will enable the site to be used without having to transport
equipment back and forward. The work is in keeping with the AONB but will enable the
site to be used even when the trees are bare and the rain is falling! I will be pos9ng
pictures of the site once complete on the schools Facebook.
Please keep a look out for events and addi9onal news displayed on the school website
and Facebook.
I appreciate this is now the February edi9on of the Parish News however we would like
to wish you a Happy New Year from all the pupils and staff at Yealand.
