Greetings and Happy New Year!

Hopefully you have been blessed with a holy and safe holiday season. Here at Lourdes, we celebrated Christmas at our annual Christmas parties and through the many wonderful winter projects coordinated by our activities staff. See page three to get a look at Christmas arts and crafts created by our residents.

Mendelson Home’s Senior Theater helped spread Christmas cheer with their rendition of A Christmas Carol. Our successful Toy’s-for-Tot’s fundraiser inspired holiday cheer and adopting two families in need reminded us we have much for which to be grateful (see page 6).

As we enter 2020, we continue to Ensure our Legacy for Future Generations. We are excited by the many projects taking place in our community this year, including the rebuild of Lourdes Healthcare Center. We are honored by the generous support of your time and treasures. I thank you for that support and for your many thoughts and prayers – precious gifts.

With the coming of 2020, I invite us to reflect on words from the Christmas message of Pope Frances – May the Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace, enlighten you and guide your steps in the way of goodness and truth.

May our gracious God continue to hold you as we walk together in serving God and our residents.

With a prayer for God’s graces,

Sister Maureen Comer, OPChief Executive Officer

PRAYER FOR THE WINTER

Lord,

At the beginning of this new year I ask for peace.Peace in our worldPeace in our countryPeace in our neighborhoods Peace in our homesPeace in our hearts.

I pray that your grace brings us to the peace we all long for.

Please give strength of character to our leadersso they stay true to the principles on which we were founded.

I ask this in your name.

Amen.

Admirations For LourdesI want to thank the staff of Clausen Manor for allowing me to be a volunteer. My wife lived at Clausen for thirteen months until her death. Being able to help these last two years has helped to fill a big hole in my life.

There is no doubt in my mind that it was a blessing from God that we found Lourdes. I have watched residents come with confused minds. Most at one time or another, are lonely, sometimes afraid, sometimes angry, bored. Sometimes they are unable to express themselves. But most of all they are not capable of caring for themselves and are hurting.

The resident assistants and activities personnel at Clausen do an amazing job under very difficult circumstances! They are wonderful, experienced and dedicated people.Their loving kindness, gengle touch, the smiles and sincere empathy are all part of what they do for the residents. And I might also say, showing concern for visitors and family members.

Thank you again for allowing me to be a volunteer at Lourdes.

WHAT’S NEW...

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

3

There are many benefits to art therapy. Viewing and creating art are great ways to connect with the world, communicate and express yourself. But there are also many health benefits. Painting, touring a museum, pottery, and woodworking all increase our quality of life, reduce stress and amplify our sense of overall wellbeing. For older adults, hobbies and art offer additional advantages. Regular art participation promotes healing. It also involves the use of fine motor skills. As such, arts and crafts can reduce joint pain and inflammation caused by arthritis or other chronic illnesses. Joining an art community also reduces feelings of loneliness, decreasing the risk of depression and anxiety. For the holidays, Lourdes’ residents took advantage of the many creative programs spreading Christmas cheer, making new friends and a lot of wonderful art. Clausen Manor and Mendelson Home created ornaments and stockings, painted snowflakes and whipped up delicious Christmas treats.

All were blessed by visiting carolers and performers! “I love the programs that the activity department offers,” said Mary Kems, Mendelson Resident. “I love knitting corner and sewing club and cooking club. I love doing things with my hands even though they don’t work well. Activities help inspire me and keeps me motivated.” In January, Opening Minds through Art (OMA) will begin again. OMA is a program designed for people with dementia and limited motor skills, and is based on the idea that residents can overcome the obstacles of age and cognitive processes through art. By focusing on what residents are still capable of, OMA builds confidence, and improves physical and psychological well-being. It’s also a lot of fun. This year, the Opening Minds through Art Program was made possible by a grant from The Catholic Foundations of Michigan. We are grateful for their support and look forward to seeing many more marvelous artistic creations from our residents.

WINTER CRAFTS

Mendelson Home’s Senior Theater did not disappoint with their performance of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Senior theater began in 2016 when Activities Assistant, Lexi Boyd, introduced the idea. Having a background in drama and dance, Lexi saw the opportunity to share her passion. The concept was to create an environment where residents could be creative and express themselves freely. Since their humble beginning, the residents at Mendelson Home have put on a variety of performances including

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music. They also get together several times a month to do skits and improvisation. “Senior Theater is stimulating,” said Lexi, Activity Assistant at Mendelson Home. “It helps with memory and is therapeutic. It helps improve mental health and gives opportunity to try something new and make new friends.” Look for more performances from Lourdes Senior Theater, coming in 2020. We hope to see you there!

LOURDES GIVES BACK The Christmas season is thought of as a time of joy and festivities. Giving gifts, family parties, elaborate decorations and delicious treats are all part of the celebration for most of us. Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky and many face hardships, struggling to cover their every day necessities. At Lourdes Senior Community, we are very blessed by the generosity and support of our friends and family. Residents and staff receive gifts in many forms daily, making Lourdes ‘A Great Place to Call Home.’ As such, each Christmas, Lourdes finds a way to pay it forward, giving to others in need.

At Mendelson Home and Clausen Manor, resident families, and staff chose to take part in a toy drive for Toys-for-Tots. Over 50 presents were donated to help spread some Christmas cheer to children in our community. Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center and Fox Manor on the Lake chose a different option. Both facilities adopted a family through Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan. “We’ve participated in many charities over the years,” said Robin McClintock, Director of Fox Manor. “We felt adopting a family was what we wanted to do this year.”

After coordinating with Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan, they were given a family, along with their ages, clothing sizes, likes and dislikes. At Fox Manor, both the residents and the staff donated their time and treasures. The staff shopped carefully for each member of the family. The residents then wrapped and labeled the gifts. Both families were grateful for the generosity and care shown by so many. Thank you to all who gave and helped make Christmas special for so many. You inspire us!

Lourdes Rehabilitation andHealthcare Center is the anchor ofLourdes Senior Community. Lourdes’mission to provide quality senior careexcellence led to the founding ofFox Manor on the Lake independentliving (1991), Clausen Manor memorycare (1995) and Mendelson Homeassisted living (2001). Today, theoverall Lourdes community has grownto some 250 residents served by astaff of 270. The Rehabilitation andHealthcare Center was named one ofthe nation’s best by the magazine U.S.News and World Report, and in 2018was named Best of the Best amongsenior facilities for the eleventhconsecutive year by readers of theOakland Press. When Lourdes Nursing Homewas dedicated on May 1, 1965, it wasa state-of-the art facility, providing 24-hour skilled nursing care for seniors, regardless of race, creed or ability topay. The building, with three wings, contained private rooms, semi-privaterooms and wards. Among the initialamenities were a chapel area, largelounge areas and dining facilities,x-ray, occupational and physicaltherapy centers, a hydrotherapy unitand a beauty-barber shop. There wasalso an enclosed courtyard, providinga secure place for residents to enjoythe outdoors. For decades, Lourdes hascontinued to grow and thrive, providing outstanding care for seniors

with its core values of Dignity,Service, Compassion and Spirituality.A portion of the community’s successmay be attributed to the organizationsability to adapt, accommodatingthe needs of older adults as theychange. Such was the case for theincorporation of short-term rehab. Physical recovery and strengthtraining have always been a part ofdaily care. However, the need forphysical therapy after an injury orillness has increased steadily over theyears. In the early 2000s, Lourdesexpanded care to bring short-termrehabilitation services to LourdesSenior Community. After over a decade, the time came for new construction to enhance the quality of life for residents. Lourdes Rehabilitation andHealthcare Center broke ground onthe renovation plan in autumn of2014. The plan was divided into twophases. The first phase focused on anew rehabilitation wing to enhanceand expand current services. Theprimary goal was to improve residentunits, the therapy center, commonareas and exterior appeal. The projectincluded fifty private rooms and baths,a state-of-the-art physical therapygym, new courtyard and visitingareas. The unit opened to residents inDecember 2015. Now, plans for phase two havebegun. Construction crews broke

ground in October 2019, clearing the land surrounding the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel. Demolition of St. Jude hall followed, and will continue through late summer 2020. The construction project as a whole is expected to last approximatelytwo years. Renovations willtake place one hall at a time, withconstruction lasting approximatelyten months for each unit. The 29,000square foot renovation will featureforty-five private rooms and baths. “The new rooms are designedsimilar to those of Rehab East andWest,” said Robert Pickup, Directorof Plant Operations at Lourdes SeniorCommunity. Each hall will consist ofapproximately twenty-two rooms, containing essential furniture: a bed, nightstand, armoire, and flat screentelevision. In addition, each unit willbe equipped with a gathering areafor residents and visitors, warmingkitchen and a luxury dining room.Other features will include a sunroomand an additional courtyard. “This phase, when completed, will complement the rest of LourdesSenior Community, enhancing thehome-like atmosphere expected byour residents,” said Robert. Regular updates will be posted to Lourdes’ website and Facebook as the project progresses. For questions or to speak with someone about naming opportunities, please contact us at 248-674-2241.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW VETERAN BENEFITSYou May be Due Veterans Benefits

Aid and attendance” is a commonly used term for a little-known veterans’ disability income. The official title of this benefit is “Pension.” The reason for using “aid and attendance” to refer to this pension is that many veterans or their single surviving spouses can become eligible if they have a regular need for the aid and attendance of a caregiver. This definition includes care provided in home and home can include assisted living, memory care and long term care facility. The Department of Veterans Affairs offers two disability income benefits for veterans who served on active duty. The purpose of this benefit is to provide supplemental income to

disabled or older veterans who have a low income. Aid and Attendance is for war veterans who have disabilities that are not connected to their active-duty service. You can apply for this benefit regardless of how long ago you left military service. Aid and Attendance benefits can help cover home care costs paid to any person or professional provider. To qualify for the Veteran’s Aid and Attendance benefit, a veteran must have served on active duty, at least 90 days, duringa period of war. There must be an honorable discharge. Single surviving spouses

of such veterans are also eligible. For more information please contact Carolyn Johnston, Lourdes Senior Community Social Worker or Oakland County Veterans Administration at 248-858-0785.

A Lourdes gift annuity involves making a gift of cash or assets to Lourdes Senior Community. In return, Lourdes will make lifetime payments to you or a loved one. Each payment is fixed with the amount depending on your age or the age of whoever receives the payments.

After all payments have been made, Lourdes Senior Community receives the remaining value of the gift to support causes that matter most to you. Your payments are fixed on the date of your gift, and your payments will never change with fluctuations in interest rate or the stock market. Depending on your gift, you may also receive the benefit of primarily tax free payments. In addition, you will receive a charitable deduction the year in which you establish the gift annuity.
