But as fate would have it, life took an ugly turn for Sheikh as his house and savings for the holy pilgrimage were gutted in a fire incident on Monday. Sheikh had migrated from Kokernag south Kashmir to Srinagar around 35 years ago. He earned his liveli- hood by repairing and polishing shoes outside SMHS hospital here. “It was my dream to perform Hajj. I used to save money in a wooden box. I could have saved it in bank but interest is prohibited in Islam,” he said. In 2015, Sheikh had applied for performing Hajj. “I also applied for passport and got it. However, keeping my age in view, the State Hajj Committee authorities asked me to take any other family member along on the holy pilgrimage. My grandson had agreed to accompany me and my joy knew no bounds as all decks were cleared for me to perform Hajj,” he said. “My dream was shattered on May 2. Thirteen residential houses include mine was gutted in devastating. The box in which I had been saving money was burnt. It is not money that I lost but my cherished dream to perform the pilgrimage,” he said. Sheikh’s passport vide number L5704521 was also damaged in fire incident. “To apply for the duplicate copy of passport is not a big deal. However, money to perform Hajj is my concern. “We don’t need any rehabilita- tion from government. My humble appeal to government is to fulfill the dream of my father. Besides the Anjuman- e-Auqaf Jamia Masjid chief, Mirwaiz Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq will also deliver his address,” he statement said. House gutted at Hawal Srinagar, May 5: A house was gued in a fire incident at Hawal area in Sha- her-e-Khaas on Thursday. Reports said the fire broke out in a business unit which was housed in a residential house of Ghulam Hassan Khan of Gasiyar Hawal. The business unit under the banner of Kashmir Kraſt Interna- tional was run by Imran Ali Khan dealing with Kashmir Craſts. “Pashmina Shawls, Kani Jamwar Pashmina Shawls, Rumaals, Crewels worth around Rs 12 Lakh were gutted in the incident,” Khan claimed. Police said the fire was caused due to short circuit. Sangarmal traders call on CM Srinagar, May 5: A delegation of Sangarmaal Traders’ Welfare Asso- ciation (STWA) called on Chief Minister Mehbooba Muſti appeal- ing her to look into their problems. The delegation, headed by Sheikh Manzoor, president of the STWA, apprised the CM of the problems and issues faced by the traders, with main thrust on the completion of project in accordance with the brochure plan, already approved by the authorities concerned. The traders also raised the issue of pending premium amount and surcharged interest imposed by the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA). The traders sought the inter- vention of the CM for pending premium amount and demanded its liquidation in easy instalments. The traders said the “undue” interest rate charged from the shopkeepers should be waved off. DAK holds medical camp at Hazratbal Srinagar, May 5: On the occasion of Mehraj-u-Alam, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) in collaboration with JK Hussaini Welfare Society today held a free medical camp at Dargah Hazratbal. In a statement, DAK spokesperson in a statement said specialist doc- tors led by President DAK Dr Nisar ul Hassan aended to hundreds of devotees who visited the camp for various ailments. Srinagar, May 5: The Education Department today said the enroll- ment of students in Government High School Hyderpora stands at 202 students and not 50 stu- dents as was stated by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Dr Asgar Samoon on Wednesday. Shahzada Shah, Headmaster, Government Girls High School Hyderpora while reacting to the news report aributed to the Divi- sional Commissioner Kashmir, said “it is extremely unfortunate that the School has been presented in such a bad light when the teachers are doing all out efforts to bring a turn- around in the education sector.” “Fact of the maer is that three schools namely GHS Hyderpora, BHS Hyderpora, and GHS Barzalla were merged last year and located in GHS Hyderpora due to which the collective staff strength of the school rose to 46, but at the same time due to hard work of teachers there was a dramatic rise in enrol- ment which presently stands at 202 students,” the Headmaster said. “Belittling comment that teach- ers are busy in knitting sweaters is not only unjust but demeaning as well, as it is the same school where CM’s Super 50 coaching was born. It is the same school which became the epicenter of a new movement in education that saw 45 selections in IIT/JEE and five in AMU recently. This is something unheard of in the history of education department till now,” she said. “We humbly invite the Divi- sional Commissioner Kashmir to visit the school as he has never done that before so that he can for himself appreciate the change on the ground that our department has been so proudly and rightly talk- ing about. Commenting about the school without knowing the facts has the potential not only to demor- alize the whole team of teachers and students but also create misconcep- tions about the department, which is not desirable,” she added. Addressing a function at DPS Budgam, the Divisional Commis- sioner Kashmir Dr Asgar Samoon on Wednesday had censured the School Education department for its failure to streamline the “disproportionate” pupil-teacher ratio in the government- run schools in the summer capital. Thieves on prowl at Goni Khan Srinagar, May 5: Valuables worth thousands were stolen from handbag of a woman at Goni Khan here when she was shopping in the busy marketplace. The victim Zeenatul Mushtaq of Safa Kadal said she was carrying valuables including five rings, pair of bangles and Rs 12,000 cash in a purse, which she had kept inside her handbag. “But suddenly, while walking down the market, I found the bag open and the valuables missing,” she said. The woman said she has filed a case with police station Sher Garhi. She appealed SSP Srinagar Amit Kumar to personally look into the maer.
