FIRST INTRODU TION

I want to say r ight at the s tar t that I am not claiming any original i tyfo r the con tent s of this m anu scrip t . In a nu m be r of instan ces I think Ihave added some forces and methods tha t a rc my own, but i t would behard to prove because of the sameness in basic pr inciples .

In m y profess ion al work I fou nd tna t m an y t im es I had need ofa good force and on the spur of the moment i t was hard i f no t imposs ib lefo r m e to th ink of the most su i tab le m etho d for the con di t ion s und erwh ich I wa s wo rking . I t was over a year ago when Ar thur Lloyd, the Human Card Index,whose name and ac t ( the only one of i t s k ind) has graced prac t ica l lyevery vaudevi l le thea t re in the wor ld , spoke to me about the usefu lnessof a com ple te comp i la t ion on the subjec t of forc ing . I im m ed ia te lyagreed , and for one year have p icked up and l i led every poss ib le methodthat I cou ld locale . I kn ow w ell en ou gh that the col le ct ion is no t co m -plete . I sup pose that it is alright for the wr iter to attach two intro duc tionsby himself even though it may not be done as the usual thing.

Nearly two years have passed since I laboriously turned out theoriginal 101 manuscript , which, though a disgrace to make Guttenbergturn over in his grave, did pave the way to this more extensive and(thanks only to Max Holden) much better appearing product .

That makes i t about three years since Arthur Lloyd gave me theidea of com pilin g such a collection. T im e does fly but after the first onehundred and fifty methods were together, t ime didn't mean a thingbeca use there just seem ed to be no m ore. Th e last fifty-two w ere the

greatest s truggle I 've ever had and as far as I am concerned, the mentionof the wo rd force is now kn ow n to put m e in a pret ty dang erous fr am eof mind.

I must thank Jean Hugard here for invaluable help inasmuch as hedug up about 25 of the later additions and it was a great help indeed.Otherwise I can't give any credit out, not just because it doesn't seem to bedone anymore, but because such a thing is impossible and would startsome sort of a riot, I am sure.

A year from now I ' l l probably remember i t al l as a lot of fun.Right now I can only send it out with a prayer and thanksgiving that Ihave finished.
