Grand Knights Message October 2019
In September our Council was active in all four areas of the Faith in Action Program: Faith
(Monthly adoration); Life (“Pennies from Heaven” baby bottle drive, and Respect Life Ro-
sary at a Planned Parenthood location); Community (preparing and serving breakfast to St
Joseph’s Confirmation 2 class); and Family (serving the Parish Pancake Breakfast) in addition to sched-
uled Council and Orange Chapter meetings.
Our council lead the parish monthly adoration with the Theme of the Holy Family. Deacon Ken Kleck-
ner organized the holy hour service and Deacon Jim Merles’ homily energized the congregation with a
reflection on Family. Brothers Adrian Sherrill, Larry Wells, Felix Piro, George Reindl and Terry Nieu-
wlandt lead the Rosary prayers.
St Josephs “Pennies from Heaven” baby bottle drive bridges the months of September and October.
Thanks to Brother Walter Hill for organizing and provisioning the distribution of baby bottles. Funds
collected in October with the return of baby bottles support mothers in need who choose Life for their
unborn. This is an important part of our Pro-Life ministry.
Our council prepared and served delicious “Green Eggs and Ham” to approximately 150 Confirmation 2
students and their advisors. Mike Spillman lead the kitchen crew consisting of Ralph Gatto, Felix Piro,
Adrian Sherrill, Ric Chiongson, John Correz, Valentin Ramos, Terry Gibbons, Naz Le Blanc, Mike
Withrow and Hugh Lynch. Thanks to brothers Taft Kintzle and Rodd Kliner who provided “lessons
learned” from past Confirmation Breakfasts which Mike Spillman documented into a step-by-step Proce-
dure.
Brother Knight Rodd Kliner lead the September pancake breakfast. The breakfast was a success. A total
of 228 meals served – 53 French Toast; 81 pancake meals, 128 omelets and omelet combos.
Council 10287 was well represented at the Orange Chapter Meeting. Hugh Lynch, Felix Piro, Terry
Gibbons and Patrick Lonowski joined District Deputy Naz Le Blanc at Holy Family Church on 26 Sep-
tember. The agenda included a presentation by Regional Training Director Kenneth White on “Delta
Church Drive” to describe a successful membership process. Our Knights page on the St Joseph parish
website contains links to Orange Chapter, California State and Knights Supreme websites which contain
more description of Faith in Action initiatives. Also, note that officers’ duties and responsibilities are
sketched on our parish website – just select the officers Name/Title to link to a description of the Council
Office.
Your Humble Servant in Christ,
Hugh Lynch

Mark your Calendar! Our weekend for our won-
derful retreat in the Sierra Madre foothills will
be January 17th through the 19th 2020, and I
wanted to share it with you so that you could
put it on your calendar. I know, it seems a long
time away, but you would be surprised how fast
it creeps upon us!
Also, have you given any thought as to who you
would invite this coming year to the 2020 retreat
as we discussed at the St. Joseph’s Group Meet-
ing on the 2019 retreat? It is very important that
you invite at least one person so he can experi-
ence a rewarding retreat like you did in 2019!
God Bless,
Tom Woore

PROJECT L.I.F.E. Living In Faith Everyday
Project LIFE matches two young adults from CSUF with a St. Joseph parishioner to visit one hour weekly
for ten weeks during the semester. There is no charge for the visits. Older adults open their homes or meet
in neutral sites and share their LIFE experiences with the college students who fulfill a gerontology class as-
signment.
These intergenerational connections bring numerous Blessings inspired by both enthusiastic and youthful
persons sharing on week topics as well as the holy spirit guiding the friendship building.
Through wisdom sharing and a kind listening ear, the older adults five their gifts of time and talent as men-
tors for young college students searching for clarity as they face decisions on majors and career paths.
Currently we have over 50 students matched with 18 fellow parishioners. Since we began 5 years ago, we
have logged over 10,000 hours. 180 young adults, and 40 older adults.
Our website has three videos on the program. Students are trained, supervised, and background checked.
Funding comes from generous individuals and we always seek help to cover fixed costs. You can call me with
any questions: 714-612-0306.
Blessings,
Phil Calhoun, St. Joseph Parishioner

Thank you Phil for providing this information to our St. Joseph Knights of Columbus Council!
The editor.
The theme for October is “Real Life Stories.”
A field agent like me who is lucky enough to be doing this great work for even a few years, undoubtedly has a personal story of the chaos and disorder that a devastated family stares at when there is a sudden loss. If our goal is to protect Catholic families from the near devastation that our Venerable founder faced, then I have to tell the story of how I can help my brother knights. The process of making sure one has adequate protection for the family is not painful; in fact since we are brother knights serving brother knights, it is often a time of not only helping to protect all that is important to a family, but also a shared experience that leads to an abiding friendship.
There are two stories I’d like to relate.
The first is about a young boy named Julius. When Julius was 7 years old his mother, Irene, who was 37, died of cancer. His father, Norman, had two teenage girls along with 7-year-old Julius to support and raise. The family was forced to rely on the help and generosity of friends and relatives because Irene died without life insurance. Norman had a three-hour commute to his job, but always supported his chil-dren’s activities. Julius excelled at sports, especially football and his dad spent what little free time he had fostering Julius and his talent. Julius later admitted that he “was handed a life lesson early, growing up with one parent. It wasn’t the easiest life—my dad sacrificed a lot.”
Fast forward to Julius some 30 years later and he is married, has a wife and two children. He’s done quite well for himself both professionally and financially. He has had a distinguished career and he has a considerable amount of life insurance to protect his family. Julius understands protection quite well after the early life he experienced. He understands the hardships of a family that loses a parent and what the children must go through. In his professional life he enjoyed considerable success because of those that protected him. For 13 years he was protected in his career. You see that protection for Julius came in the form of 300-pound offensive linemen?nobody called him Julius. His nickname was “Boomer” ?Boomer Esiason—a four time Pro Bowler, an NFL Most Valuable Player and a Walter Peyton NFL Man of the Year. Most importantly, a husband to Cheryl and a father to Sydney and Gunnar.
“Life happens at the most unexpected of times, and life insurance is about protecting the future and the people you love,” Boomer says. “Remember, if something happens and you haven’t done the planning, the people you leave behind will feel the brunt of your mistakes.” That story comes from LifeHappens.org.
The other story is not similar at all. It’s about a member of the Knights of Columbus. He passed away recently and like in Boomer’s family, left behind a spouse and several young children. There were no whispered worries at the funeral home. There was no GoFundMe page to raise money. There is no con-cern that the children will not go to college or that the wedding he promised his daughter will not take place. No, their home and future are secure. Who was that knight? I don’t know; you don’t hear about those men. Because the council didn’t have to have a spaghetti dinner or pass the hat. But I assure you he was out there. But you’ll never know it?because he planned.
Let’s sit down and do some planning and put your mind at ease.
Vivat Jesus!
Best Regards,
KEVIN J.GARZA FICF
