Balmain Public School has registered for a PenPal writing opportunity through Australia Post. We are very excited to engage with authentic writing, to focus on writing skills (paragraphing, drafting, editing, sentence structure), handwriting, questioning and comprehending. Australia Post matches classes to schools around Australia with classes of the same grade with similar student numbers.
Teachers will approach this authentic writing opportunity with sensitivity to the disclosure of personal information. For example, letter writing will not respond to personal questions and will only engage in general questions based around school life. A student’s full name, age or address will not be communicated at any time. The letter writing process will be explicitly guided by the classroom teachers.
Students will engage in writing and responding through this initiative. General topics discussed in letter writing may include: - Favourite colours, subjects, interests - School programs: investigations, music, ProjectNEST, Freedom 2 Learn - Current incursions/excursions: Sydney Dance Company, Halloween Disco, gymnastics
The whole letter writing experience is supported by ‘The Pen Pal Club’ by Sally Morgan. Lesson plans have been developed to further support writing in a specific manner. For example, whilst this whole experience places an emphasis on letter writing, lessons hone in on the teaching skills. A very specific example may include the teaching of adjectives. This encourages students to ask themselves, ‘how can I make my writing more interesting through the use of adjectives?’
We have commenced our letter writing this week and look forward to receiving letters from other students around Australia!

Sally Morgan is one of Australia's best-known Aboriginal artists and writers.
For as long as she can remember, Sally wanted to paint and write but at school she was discouraged from expressing herself through her art because her teachers failed to see the promise in her individual style. It was not until she researched her family history and discovered her Aboriginal identity that she found meaning in her images and gained the confidence to pick up her paints again. Sally’s widely-acclaimed first book, My Place, has sold over half a million copies in Australia. Her children's picture story books include Little Piggies and Hurry Up Oscar. She has collaborated with artist and illustrator Bronwyn Bancroft (past parent of Balmain PS) on several picture books including Dan's Grampa. Curly and the Fent was written by Sally in collaboration with her children Ambelin, Blaze and Ezekiel. Sally is a Professor at the Centre for Aboriginal Studies at the University of Western Australia and lives in Perth with her three children.

FOBL Awards
Evening FOBL is a competition organised annually, for Stage 3, by the ‘Friends of Balmain Library’. This year we had to write a story of 800 words maximum.
Everybody that entered had to write a story based on one of the three story prompts: ‘Don’t Make Me Use My Super Power’, ‘This Day Had Come At Last’, or ‘In All My Life I Had Never Felt So…’. These stimuli change every year.
Six people from Balmain PS got an award, including Alexandra S, Alistair G, Sooyeon K, Sylvie D, Ricky S and Thomas A. The awards were presented at the awards night on 18th October. We received awards and were able to share a small proportion of our story. Next year, the topic will be a poem with a maximum of 400 words.
(L to R: Ricky S, Alistair G, Thomas A, Sylvie D, Alexandra S)

Brad Marshall, The Unplugged Psychologist, is on the front line helping parents deal with the dominance of gaming and problematic technology use. His clinic, the Internet Addiction Clinic @ Kidspace, was one of the first in Australia established to help young children, teenagers and families whose lives are totally torn apart by technology…
7-step plan to unplug & reclaim your kid’s childhood
Unplugged Step 1: CONTROL THE WIFI
Reframe the internet as a REWARD and not a RIGHT - Implement INTERNET ONINTERNET OFF
Unplugged Step 2: AVOID GUERILLA WARFARE
Unplug the Wifi rather than remove device
Unplugged Step 3: NEGOTIATE A SCHEDULE
eg 5:30pm-9:00pm Homework? Dinner? Leisure time (ie internet use)?
Unplugged Step 4: ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT
eg If agreement is 2 hours per night, that means 2 hours. Total. This includes homework, other ‘educational needs’ or even face-timing Grandma!
Unplugged Step 5: NAME YOUR PRICE
Unplugged Step 6: MINIMISE MOBILE DATA
Find a plan that will give your child minimal capped data usage
Unplugged Step 7: LOCK IT IN
Keep the contract casual and informal - brainstorm together - take a photo and text/email it to your child
Useful App - Qustodio Parental Control
With Qustodio, you’ll have more information to help protect your children against the growing number of serious online issues such as viewing inappropriate content, cyberbullying, cyberpredators, and screen addiction.
Beware!!!!! Innocent-looking apps on your child’s phone
The Secret Calculator App looks like an innocent calculator app on your child's Iphone or Android device. Actually, this app is used to hide files, photos and videos. ... This app is popular because it helps anyone to hide images, sexting photos, and files in a folder that can never be found. https://www.anxioustoddlers.com/calculator-photo-vault/#.Xb6NcC2B2CQ
