13 – 14 June 2019, Crown Conference Centre, Southbank
2019 Victorian Marine & Coastal Forum
‘building partnerships for our future’
PROGRAM
MINISTERIAL FOREWORDWelcome to the 2019 Victorian Marine and Coastal Forum, jointly hosted by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Coastcare Victoria and the Victorian Marine and Coastal Council.
The forum aims to provide a unique opportunity to bring together coastal and marine managers, decision makers, traditional owners, researchers, community members and volunteers to enable the building of relationships, sharing of knowledge and collaborating across the sector to discuss current and future marine and coastal challenges.
I am particularly thrilled to welcome our two keynote speakers, Ms Susan Alberti AC, Deputy Chair of Volunteering Australia, and Associate Professor Daniel Ierodiaconou from Deakin University.
The Victorian Government is committed to providing a better future for Victoria’s marine and coastal environment. I would like to acknowledge the thousands of Victorians who make significant contributions to protecting and improving the health and values of the marine and coastal environment while addressing ongoing challenges such as population growth, climate change and ageing infrastructure.
The breadth of people and organisations involved in marine and coastal management means that a collaborative approach is vital. No single agency can deliver an integrated response across the various sectors and tiers of state and local government, agencies, non-government organisations and community groups. The forum is one of many actions the Victorian Government is undertaking to assist in building community engagement and action.
I wish you all a successful and collaborative forum.
The Hon Lily D’Ambrosio MPMinister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change
VICTORIAN MARINE AND COASTAL COUNCIL FOREWORDThe Victorian Marine and Coastal Council is pleased to be a supporting partner of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning in hosting the 2019 Victorian Marine and Coastal Forum, and extend a warm welcome to all delegates.
Established under the Marine and Coastal Act 2018, the Council was formed in August 2018. Our purpose is to provide evidence and stakeholder-informed advice to enable leadership in the adaptive planning and management of Victoria’s marine waters and coastal areas. We advise the ministers responsible for marine and coastal planning and management, including providing scientific advice when requested.
This forum provides Council an excellent opportunity to meet marine and coastal managers, researchers and volunteers – to listen and better understand your experiences and insights. Our conversations and interactions will help Council ensure that the advice we give is stakeholder informed and evidence-based.
I encourage you to make the most of the forum’s program, which has been led by the delegates. You can get inspired by the wonderful keynote speakers, share your knowledge in workshops and open space events, and importantly, strengthen and build relationships that will solve current and future marine and coastal challenges.
On behalf of my six fellow Council members I wish you an enjoyable, informative and successful forum and we look forward to meeting with many of you over the two days.
Anthony BoxshallChair, Victorian Marine and Coastal Council

Thank you for attending the 2019 Victorian Marine and Coastal ForumYour attendance and participation are greatly appreciated, and we hope you’ll find the forum useful and informative.
All presentations will be made available on the forum website at the conclusion of the event.
We will also be conducting an online survey to identify what participants gained at the forum, inform next steps and to ensure that any future forums build on what was achieved at this event.
Participants will be contacted by email to undertake the survey, which will take 5-10 minutes to complete. Once compiled, survey results will be shared with all participants.
Again, thank you for attending.
We look forward to building productive partnerships for our future and gaining a better understanding of the Marine & Coastal Act 2018.
