Congratulations on joining the USC Upstate Spartan family! I, along with the rest of the Housing and Residential Life team, are busy preparing for your arrival and are excited to welcome you HOME!Living on campus provides endless opportunities for getting involved, having fun and making friends. Our on-campus community is centered on supporting your personal growth and academic success as a USC Upstate Spartan. It is our mission to create a memorable experience by promoting inclusive learning environments beyond the classroom while providing a community of care to residential students.This guide was designed to help you settle into your new home. As you prepare for the big move, familiarize yourself with our facilities, policies, and “Move Up!” procedures. Spend some time thinking about how you will customize your space for comfort and success. What NOT to Bring

Your assigned on-campus space is your home away from home. We encourage you to make it your own by filling it not only with necessities, but also with personal items to add comfort and style. Appropriate decorations are allowed and encouraged!

To prevent having duplicate items on Move UP day, we recommend contacting your room/suitemates ahead of time to discuss what each of you plan to bring.

Suggested items to use when hanging pictures or posters are:

Keep in mind that using these materials incorrectly could damage the walls/paint, resulting in damage fines assessed after check out.

• Poster putty/sticky-tack in white, grey or yellow (please NO blue or green; it may stain walls)

• T-Pins

• 3M Command strips with Velcro

Move UP (Check-in/Move-In) day is a busy and exiting time for both students and families. New students should take the following steps for a successful move-in:

1. Complete “Not Anymore” modules and submit immunization documents before arrival to campus.

2. Report to the first station in the HEC JM Smith Boardroom with your student ID.

3. Once you have completed the check-in process, you may join your family, unload and begin the move-in process.

2019Sunday, Aug. 18, 20198 a.m. - Noon

Housing and Residential Life is partnering with a third-party vendor, Residence Hall Linens, to offer linens that will fit your extra-long twin mattress. We do receive a commission from these sales and use those funds to help with events for the upcoming year! The linens can easily be ordered online. They will be shipped to your home and ready for you to bring to campus. Visit uscupstate.ocm.com for more information. The company also offers bundles of linens, towels and other desired items in various packages.

2019 Move UP Traffic Information

For Move Up 2019, the USC Upstate Police Department will be handling all traffic and control of parking lots.

Students and/or family members arriving for Move Up, should enter campus using North Campus Boulevard at Valley Falls Road, then:

• Pull into the half-circle drive in front of the HEC Building; the student-resident should proceed into the building and stop at the first station in the hallway near Enrollment Services.

• The driver will receive a pass for their windshield with the lot and time to remove their vehicle. You will have 1 hour to unload and move in order to make room for the next group arriving.

• Turn right out of the circle drive and enter the parking lot on the right, approximately 200 feet down.

• All vehicles entering the lot will turn right and follow the drive. If your student is living in Magnolia House, you will park in the upper lot, where you will be met by Move Up volunteers to help unload your items and move them to the student’s room.

• If your student is living in Palmetto House, follow the drive down to the lower section. At the bottom, you will be met by Move Up volunteers to help unload your items and move them to the student’s room.

• All vehicles must be moved within the hour to either the commuter lot (north overflow), the URC or HEC lot. Please exit from the same area where you entered the lot to begin with. University Police will be able to direct you accordingly.

Note: Hodge Drive, the street that runs next to the residential area and through campus, will be closed to two-way traffic on Aug 18. The section of Hodge Drive directly in front of the Treehouses (Magnolia and Palmetto) will be closed completely.

If you are an early move-in or summer resident, you will be able to leave the residential area using Hodge Drive on Aug. 18. You will not be able to use Hodge Drive to return to the area. Please note, the gates will be locked from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

** Trailers and oversized vehicles are NOT recommended and may require parking in the commuter lot further away from the residential area.

***Additional vehicles beyond the one with belongings will be directed to park in the commuter lot across North Campus Boulevard from the residential area.

Other features at Move Up

• Several food trucks will be available on Hodge Drive for lunch purchases.

• Volunteers and community groups will have water and cooling stations located around the buildings.

• USC Upstate Health Services staff will be on hand at a tent for any emergency health needs.

GETTING SETTLED

Cable Service: Standard cable is provided to residents in all residential areas. Visit our website for a list of channels.

Wifi: All residential areas are equipped with wireless internet. WiFi is available across campus for all students.

In Your Room

Information Desks: Magnolia House, Palmetto House and Sparty’s Den feature an information desk where helpful services are provided. Resident Advisers (RAs) and Desk Assistants (DAs) welcome guests, answer questions, and help ensure resident’s safety. At the Information Desks, residents can offer suggestions, register concerns, learn how to submit work orders, inquire about upcoming events and more. Get to know the RAs and DAs and know that they are there to help.

Laundry Facilities: Laundry facilities are provided for your convenience on each floor of Magnolia House and Palmetto House. Laundry machines are FREE! All you’ll need to bring is high-efficiency laundry detergent. The machines operate with Laundry Alert, allowing you to receive a text message or email when your load is complete. The laundry facilities for Villa residents are located in The Landing.

Postal Services: Mailboxes for lettered mail are located in the basement of the Palmetto House for residents of Magnolia and Palmetto and in The Landing for students in the Villas. Packages can be picked up from the NEW package lockers located in the basement of Palmetto House. You will receive an email when your package has been delivered and that email will contain a unique code for you to retrieve your package. Packages are not accepted at Information Desks or in the Housing and Residential Life office.

Safety and Security: All entrance doors and hallways are secured with card readers and cameras. Your student ID card will allow you access into your assigned residence hall, hallway and your suite door. Please keep your hall secure and safe by meeting your guests at the front door adjacent to the lobby and properly checking them in. The Magnolia and Palmetto House Information Desks are staffed from 6 a.m.- 10 pm. by Resident Advisers and Desk Assistants. From 10 pm. – 6 a.m. the Information Desks are staffed by professional overnight security. Remember to lock the door to your room every time you leave and to never give your student ID to someone to gain access to the building.

In Your Residence Hall

Whether your roommate is already an acquaintance or someone you just met, it is important to communicate effectively and learn to problem-solve early on. Use the acronym FIND as a method for communicating and getting to know your roommate:

Family – Talking about those you know and love best makes for a great starter topic when getting to know your roommate.

Interests – Share your hobbies and passions from the start. You may find that you have more in common than you think!

Negotiables – Discuss your biggest pet-peeves and determine each of your negotiables/non-negotiables to avoid potential conflict.

Destiny – Share what each of you hope to accomplish at USC Upstate and in life. Discuss your majors, classes, and future. Strive to support one another in accomplishing your goals!

Room changes cannot be considered until after the third full week of the semester. You may obtain a Room Change Request form for room and roommate changes in the Housing and Residential Life Office. Requests are reviewed and granted based on availability. Speak with your Resident Adviser for more information. The earliest moves will be granted is Sept. 16 in the fall and Feb. 3 in the spring.
