Principal’s Report

I hope everyone has had a safe, pleasant and restful time over the festive season and school holidays. It was a good time to relax and prepare for an exciting 2019. I hope all of our stu-dents had a wonderful holiday and are now ready to get into some challenging learning. Staff have returned refreshed and invigorated and are ready for a wonderful 2019. We have spent the past two days involved in a series of professional learning sessions. We focused heavily on curriculum development, building a range of teaching strategies and planning for this year’s program.

The Year 7-12 students commenced today, starting with an assembly, followed by Year Level meetings then they started their subjects from period 2. All started smoothly and positively. There was a great deal of excitement amongst the students as they renewed friendships and caught up about their holiday adventures. There is certainly a positive vibe around the school as we all look forward to an interesting and productive school year.

New Staff

I am pleased to introduce new staff to you. Amanda Cook has joined us this year to teach the Year Prep to 3 class. Miss Cook has previously been teaching at St Josephs Primary School. I would also like to welcome Mrs Tracy Bound to Hopetoun P-12 College. Mrs Bound has been teaching at Tyrrell College and she moves here to teach the Year 4 to 6 class. We also welcome Mrs Burns back after two years leave. Mrs Burns re-joins the Humanities Department. We hope you all enjoy your time here at Hopetoun College.

New Students

It is also pleasing to meet the new students for 2019. The new preps start tomorrow as will some new students in other primary classes. All will be welcomed upon arrival. We have three new students entering our school to join the Year 7 class; Rori Marshman, Kiara O’Reilly and Nakeisha Pomeroy. We have two new students in Year 9; Alysha Flower and Jeremy Pomeroy and we have two new students in Year 11; Dalton Roberts and Tyson Pomeroy. Welcome to all of you and I am sure that all students will use their values of respect and responsibility to make sure that all new students enjoy their time at Hopetoun P-12 College. It is also pleasing to note that Trevor Carson has re-joined us in the Year 10 class.

Welcome, also, to the new parents and carers. We have met most of you and we are looking forward to meeting you all again at the Big Breakfast.

An Invitation

The start of a school year is important and worth celebrating. To celebrate this we invite all par-ents, grandparents carers, extended families and friends to a welcome breakfast. Yes, come along and join us for a breakfast of cereal, eggs and bacon along with a coffee and juice for an informal breakfast. It will be held at the front of the school adjacent to our fabulous green-grassed oval. When the bell goes at five minutes to nine, you are invited to go into classrooms and year level meetings for a brief ‘hi’ to start the day. Parents of students doing Units 3 and 4 (Year 12 and some Year 11s) are invited to go to the library for an information session (10-15 minutes) followed by a brief ‘catch-up’ with the VCE teachers.

Details of the Big Breakfast are:

Event – “Big Breakfast” to celebrate the start of the school year.

Date and Time – Tuesday 5th February, commencing at 8am.

Format – breakfast served from 8am followed by classroom visit and VCE information commencing at 8.55am. There will be brief welcome speeches at 8.50am.

Page 3: 2019 Term 1 - WordPress.com · Please find attached the application form for the Yarriambiack Youth Action Council (YYAC), 2019, our first trip will be a Paintballing Trip on February

This is a great way to visit the school, meet the teachers, meet the classes and hear information about VCE classes then head off to your other commitments.

Parent Information Session on Study Skills

We commenced a program last year whereby a group called Elevate came to school and provided students and parents with seminars on proven study techniques. We are extending the program this year so that all students in Years 9 to 12 will participate in the seminar during the day then par-ents, carers and any other interested people, of all Year 9-12 students are invited to a 7pm infor-mation session. The parent session will cover tips and advice on how to help your child with time management, goal setting, study schedules, managing distractions and other topics of interest to parents interested in supporting their child through the later years of schooling. The details are:

Event – How to support your child with their studies run by Elevate Education. Date – Thursday 7th February Time – 7-8pm. Location – Room 5. Cost – nil. For – Parents, carers and interested people, of students in Years 10, 11 and 12.

Notices for the Elevate parent session will be sent home separately with the students.

Getting to know

Miss Cook

Why did you become a teacher? Because I’ve always had a passion for helping others, in particular children.

What is the best thing about being a teacher?

I love seeing the children grow academically and socially. As teachers we are lucky that we get to see the rewards of our hard work with children

If you were Principal for one day, what would you do?

To be honest, I would put a massive dent in the school budget shopping for classroom resources, not that I need them! I just love buying new things for the kids to use for their learning.

What would you like to bring to

Hopetoun P-12?

I would like to bring a safe classroom setting that brings the best out of every student both academically, socially and emotionally.

Getting to know

Mrs Bound

Why did you become a teacher? To build confidence in students and enhance their learning.

What would you like to bring to Hopetoun P-12 College

I would bring my experience and knowledge to share with my students.

What is the best thing about being a teacher?

Seeing students achieve and doing their best.

If you were Principal for one day, what would you do?

I would hire a water slide and supply lunch for everyone to thank them for their wonderful efforts they have shown with their learning.
