Join renowned architectural historian Richard GuyWilson to experience and study four centuries ofarchitecture, art, culture, and landscape at theNewport Summer School. This ten-day program isbased in Newport, Rhode Island, the “Queen” ofAmerican resorts. You will enjoy lectures by RichardGuy Wilson and other leading scholars, tours of privatehomes, and opportunities to get behind the scenes atsome of America’s grandest Mansions.

Participants will examine Newport’s most compelling sites:Richard Morris Hunt’s Marble House, The Breakers, and OchreCourt; Richard Upjohn’s Kingscote; H.H. Richardson’s William WattsSherman House; and McKim, Meade & White’s Casino on BellevueAvenue and Isaac Bell House. Additional highlights include visits toVictorian gardens, historic churches, private houses and interiors,and opportunities to view Tiffany windows and paintings by leadingAmerican artists. Field trips include visits to Providence, RI, andNorth Easton, MA. Participants are housed at Ochre Lodge at SalveRegina University, designed by architect Dudley Newton in 1890.

Past lecturers have included:Jennifer Carlquist, Pauline C. Metcalf, Paul Miller, Ron Onorato,Laurie Ossman, Pieter Roos, and John Tschirch.

The Chicago Summer School focuses on the Americanroots of Modernism. After the Great Chicago Fire of1871, progressive architects and patrons moved thecity to the forefront of technological and aestheticexperimentation. Through expert lectures and tours,course directors Tina Strauss and John Waters lead asurvey of 19th- and early 20th-century architecture,art, design, landscape, and preservation.

Participants will visit private and public buildings, parks, andlandscapes, with access to the era’s most significant spaces: thesite of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, H.H. Richardson’sGlessner House, Adler & Sullivan’s Auditorium Building, Burnham &Root’s Rookery Building, and Graceland Cemetery. In Oak Parkstudents will see Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home and Studio, UnityTemple and other seminal designs. Additional sites include GildedAge mansions in the historic Gold Coast neighborhood and thecollections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Driehaus Museum.

With a new emphasis on the Arts and Crafts Movementas well as High Victorian design, the London SummerSchool is a leading study program for Victorianarchitecture, art and design. Join course director JoannaBanham and a distinguished roster of experts to explorethe architecture, landscape, decorative and industrialarts of London, the Midlands, the Cotswolds and otherkey locations.

In London, participants will explore sites and events that made thecapital the center of commerce, politics, and culture, including thePalace of Westminster, the Foreign Office, St. Pancras Station,Leighton House, and All Saints Church, Margaret Street. Tours ofLiverpool and Manchester reveal the complexity of England’sindustrial heritage–incorporating majestic civic buildings, churches,factories, and terraced housing. The focus on the Arts and Craftsfeatures visits to Kelmscott Manor, Standen, Rodmarton andWightwick Manor. Day trips to Oxford and Surrey explore GothicRevival and Pre-Raphaelite gems like Worcester and Keble Colleges,and the work of Voysey and G.F. Watts.

GENERAL INFORMATIONAll three programs are open to graduate students, academics, architects, and thegeneral public. The Summer Schools are academically rigorous and physicallydemanding. A typical day includes lecture and tours by leading scholars,considerable walking, periods of standing, and engaging in social experiences.These intensive programs are action packed, with little free time. AIA ContinuingEducation Units are available.

Tuition costs include expert instruction, shared accommodation, some meals,tours, and admissions. Competitive scholarships are available. All applications are due March 1. Those applicants paying full tuition have theoption of submitting their application for an earlier deadline of January 26, withearlier notification of acceptance.
