Night Out! Black Violin
“Their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.” — NPR
Black Violin is composed of classically trained violist and violinist Wil B. and Kev Marcus, who combine their classical training and hip-hop influences to create a distinctive multi-genre sound that is often described as “classical boom.” The band’s most recent record, Stereotypes, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart and #4 on the Billboard R&B Chart.
“Black Violin works hard, but makes it all look like play… Sometimes they play with the intense seriousness of orches-tral soloists; at others they fiddle as if at a hoedown; at still others they strum the violin and viola like guitars.” — The New York Times
“Black Violin upends cultural and musical stereotypes…an unexpected blend of clas-sically trained musicianship and hip-hop beats and inventiveness.” — The Miami HeraldCost includes ticket and transportation. Bring your passion to learn on this bird walk at Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley as we explore the area to see and hear these feathered travelers and newly-arrived neighbors. The walk is intended for beginners, so don’t feel you need prior experience or knowledge. Binoculars and field guides are helpful. Great Decisions ProgramSouth AfricaThe African National Congress (ANC) party has governed South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. But the party today suffers from popular frustration over official corruption and economic stagnation. It faces growing threats from both left and right opposition parties, even as intraparty divisions surface. Given America’s history of opportunis-tic engagement with Africa, there are few prospects for a closer relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile, a weaker ANC could lead to political frag-mentation in a relatively new democracy.Date: Tuesday, April 16Time: 9:30-11amSite: FCC-Room 109Instructor: Dr. Leon RodriguesCost: $5 (1 session)Class Number: 6553A

What is ECFE?The Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program offers fun, interactive and educational activities to parents and children ages birth to five years. The goal of the program is to strengthen families and help parents and children grow and develop within a circle of support. Parents and children participate in fun activities that encourage learning. Parents partici-pate in discussions led by a parent educa-tor while their children play, learn and socialize with other children.
*The word “parents” includes all individuals who function in a parenting role – mothers, fathers, partners, grandparents and other relatives, foster parents, etc.
Come for your child…Stay for Yourself
Help Me GrowWhile all young children grow and change at their own individual rate, some chil-dren experience delays in their develop-ment. Help Me Grow is a group of service providers who work together providing free early intervention referral services for children birth to three-years-old. MN Children who qualify could be eligi-ble for services in their home, child care setting, or school. Further resources are provided by calling Anoka Area Help Me Grow Central 1-866-693-GROW (4769) or go to helpmegrowmn.org to schedule and gain more information regarding a free screening.
Home VisitsFridley’s Early Childhood program wants to support all families. If you have a new baby or have recently moved into the Frid-ley School District, we offer a free new baby visit at the parent’s request. We provide information for the entire family on Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) programs and useful community resources near you. We will also add your children to our district census to be sure you get the appropriate mailings as your child grows and nears school age.
Call us today at 763-502-5143 to let us know about the new baby and children of your household.
We’re Looking for the “New Kids in Town!”
Is your child in the Census?Sign up to receive information on our schools and programs. The Fridley School District uses the census information as we inform the community of our programs and schools. To put your child on the census please call the district’s enrollment center at 763-502-5081.
ECFE Advisory CouncilAre you in an ECFE class? Do you come to the Creative Play Center? Or are you an interested Community Member? We invite you to join our Advisory Council.
The Advisory Council advises Frid-ley Community Education and advo-cates for its programs. The councils input and planning has been looked upon to guide community needs, and activities for families in your neighborhood. We strive to expand resources and strengthen a commu-nity of active members together.
ECFE ClassesMany ECFE classes began in January and will run until May. Occasionally an open-ing will become available. Call 763-502-5143 for information and availability.
Early Childhood ScreeningWill your child be attending preschool this year? Is your child between the ages of 3 and Kindergarten? If you answer yes to these questions Early Childhood screening is for your child.
Screening is a free and quick look at how your child is growing and developing. Ideally the screening process serves chil-dren between the ages of 3 ½ and 4, and is required before your child registers for Preschool and Kindergarten throughout the state of Minnesota. Screening identi-fies possible learning or health concerns so that children can get the help they need before starting school. Appointments are necessary.
To schedule a screening please call,763-502-5157 or register online at:https://fridley.ce.eleyo.com and search for early childhood screening in the search area for available appointments.
