STATS FCS POLL

What is a Leatherneck?Western Illinois holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. The school began use of the Marine Corps’ official nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks”, in 1927 when then-athletic director and head base-ball, basketball and football coach Ray “Rock” Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the nickname.

Team Comparisons

NFL Debut | No. 99 Khalen Saunders made his NFL regular-season debut for the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday (Oct. 6), where he record-ed a solo tackle. He earned his first career start the following week against the Texans (Oct. 13). The Chiefs currently sit atop the AFC West with an overall record of 5-3. Triple Overtime | It took three overtime periods to decide the Missouri Valley Football Conference opener between Western Illinois and Missouri State on Saturday (Oct. 5), and the visiting Bears took home the 37-31 decision. Western’s last overtime game occurred in a 30-24, double-overtime win against South Dakota State on Nov. 21, 2015. The team was previously working a 5-0 winning streak in overtime games dating back to 2003. In the Backfield | Marquis Smith has had at least two pass breakups in three games this season. He recorded three in back-to-back games against Montana State and Tennessee Tech. Smith is third in the Valley in passes defended (10).

Double Down | Dennis Houston’s inaugural Western campaign currently includes a team-best 362 receiving yards with two touch-downs. He is the only Leatherneck to post 100-plus receiving yards in a single game this season and achieved the feat in back-to-back in games against Montana State (141) and Tennessee Tech (111). The numbers sits sixth and 10th in the Valley, and he is one of two in the league with a pair of 100-yard perfor-mances. With a 65-yard catch, Houston tied Kendon Walker for WIU’s longest play of the year.

Hall of Fame | Western Athletics announced its 2019 Hall of Fame class in August, and the distinguished group included Bob Nardelli (Football) and the 1974 baseball team.  Nardelli suited up for Western’s 1969 team that won the final IIAC championship. The group recorded an overall record of 8-2 and also received a bid to the Mineral Water Bowl. As the starting left guard, he assisted the 1969 Leathernecks to the ninth-best ranking in the nation with 425.1 yards of total offense. Nadelli was named All-State Second Team (Peoria Journal Star) as well as an Inter-state Conference Football Team honorable. The induction ceremony took place Friday, October 4. What An Introduction | Kevin Johnson made his Leatherneck debut in the second half of their non-conference finale against Tennes-see Tech. His team trailed, 14-3, at the break before the senior transfer sparked a rally that closed the deficit to 31-24 midway through the fourth quarter. He recorded three touchdowns on a 10-14-2 performance with 159 yards. Sean McGuire was the last Leatherneck QB to throw three or more touchdown passes, and did so against Missouri State a season ago.

An original member of the Boston Patriots, Garron joined the team before its inaugural season in 1960. The running back played for the Patriots through the 1968 season and was a four-time American Football League All-Star. Garron was most recently named to the Patriots All-1960s team and ranked ninth in the franchise’s history with 2,981 career rushing yards.

The Best in the CFL | The Hamilton Tiger-Cats clinched first place in the Canadian Football League’s east division and have earned a guar-anteed bye in the Eastern Final. The Leather-necks have two former letter winners suiting up in the league as Jaelon Acklin plays for the Tiger-Cats and Sean McGuire the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Acklin currently ranks third amongst the Hamil-ton wideouts with 701 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Career Starts

Western Illinois continues its tradition as one of the top NCAA FCS programs with a pipeline to the NFL; Leatherneck players and coaches have won 17 Super Bowl Championships. • Mike Wagner won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Steel Curtain era.

• Rodney Harrison won a pair of Super Bowls with the New England Patriots in three appearances all-time. He was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2019 and now works in-studio at NBC Sports during Sunday Night Football Night.

• Don Beebe is just one of three players to have played in SIX Super Bowls in his career. He was part of the four consecutive appearances by Buffalo and went 1-1 with the Green Bay Packers. Beebe has one of the most famous Super Bowl plays when he raced down the field, chasing down Dallas Cowboys lineman Leon Lett at the 1-yard line to knock the ball away and keep Dallas from scoring a touchdown.

• From 1957-59, former WIU head coach Lou Saban had on his staff Joe Collier and standout WIU player Robert ‘Red’ Miller.

Saban was the inaugural coach for the Boston Patriots, then later the Buffalo Bills. He was the 1964 AFL ‘Coach of the Year’. Meet The Head Coach - Jared Elliott

Jared Elliott Head Coach2nd Season

When searching for the Leathernecks’ next head football coach, WIU didn’t have to look far. On Jan. 4, 2018, Jared Elliott, the program’s former assistant head coach and co-of-fensive coordinator, was chosen to lead the next era in Western football. After rejoining the team in January 2016 as an assistant coach for Charlie Fisher, Elliott assisted WIU to 14 wins, highlighted by an 8-4 record in the 2017 campaign. The Leather-necks concluded the latter slate with an appearance in the FCS Playoffs -- their second trip in three years -- and were also ranked ninth in the STATS FCS Top-25 poll. In his role, Elliott coached quarterback Sean McGuire to a pair of honorable mentions on the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference postseason list (2016 & 2017). He moved into the position of co-offensive coordinator just before the 2017 season and helped Western to the 16th-best scoring offense in the FCS. The Leathernecks were also ranked 22nd in fourth-down conversions, 23rd in third-down conversions, and 29th in passing offense.

In his first year at the helm of the program, Western went 5-6 and added three first-team All-MVFC selections in Clint Ratkovich, Pete Swenson, and Khalen Saunders. The latter two were also named All-Americans (AP & STAT FCS), while Saunders went on to become the program’s first NFL draft pick in 10 years with the 84th overall selection in the 2019 event. Elliott, who worked at Western during the 2012 season, spent three years (2013-15) at Carthage College as an assistant coach and co-offensive coordinator. In 2015, Carthage averaged more than 360 yards of total offense and finished 5-5. The program improved in each of the three years Elliott worked at Carthage, going from a 1-9 record in 2013 to 3-7 and .500 during the 2015 campaign.

During the 2012 season, Elliott and the Leathernecks started three different quarterbacks (including a true-freshman). He joined Western after serving as a graduate assistant for Fisher at Miami (Ohio). Elliott was a graduate assistant in both 2010 and 2011 and assisted in coaching the quarterbacks, was responsible for film breakdown, helped in recruiting and managed the scout teams. In 2011, he worked with the offensive line and tight ends.

Elliott worked as an assistant coach for wide receivers at Missouri Southern State Univer-sity in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He conducted position meetings, film study, assisted in game planning, monitored the academic progress of his position group, and ran field drills.

A native of Franklin, Tenn., Elliott was a quarterback and wide receiver at Miami (Ohio) from 2004 to 2007 and part of three Mid-American Conference championship teams. He received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and health with a minor in coaching.

Elliott and his wife Jamie have four children: Ava, Sadie, Clara, and Austin.
