THE QUINN FILESSU head coach Shawn Quinn is in his first year as head coach of the Tigers but the Chicago native has made his rounds on the collegiate level having coached at nine other programs in addition to SSU. Those programs include The Citadel, Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina, Charleston Southern, Northwestern State, Georgia Southern, Louisiana Lafayette, Tennessee and Louisiana State.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATIONThe SSU roster is made up of players from nine states, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, New York, Texas, Ohio, Alabama and Nevada, as well as the Bahamas

WE’RE BACKAfter spending the past 19 years in Division I, the Tiger athletic program is now back in Division II and the Southern Intercollegiate Conference (SIAC).

WELCOME TO THE MARSHThe SSU football staff welcomes seven new coaches including for-mer Tiger standout defensive end Marquis Smith who will coach the linebackers. Other new coaches include Nate Baker (co-offensive co-ordinator/tackles & tight end coach), Manrey Saint-Amour (offensive line coach), B.J. Johnson (wide receiv-ers coach), Zach Johnson (safeties coach), Trey Morgan (cornerback coach) and Aaron Pridemore (tight end coach)

NEW VOICEShawn Christopher, also known as J. Chris, is the new voice of the Tigers, serving as the SSU public address

announcer.

TRANSFER USSU has 12 players on the roster that have transferred from other schools. The programs, which range from FBS to junior college, include Geor-gia, UMASS, Appalachian State, Tennessee State, Bluefield, Valdosta State, Stetson, South West Oklaho-ma, The Citadel, Georgia Military, Tennessee Tech and Culver-Stockton.

SURVIVORSSU signee Kyle Frazier is a can-cer survivor. Frazier was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in April 2019 but after chemotherapy treat-ments, he was declared cancer free in August 2019. The Augusta, Georgia native will enrolled at SSU in Janu-ary 2020 and plans to join the foot-ball team.

NEW ROLEFormer SSU Sports Information Director Opio Mashariki is now the Director of Athletics. Mashariki served as Interim Athletic Director since August of 2018 and was named the permanent AD in January 2019. Mashariki served as the SSU As-sistant Athletic Director for Media Relations since 2005.

The October 5 road game at Charleston Southern will be shown on ESPN+ as part of the Big South Football Television Package and the Tigers home contest with Fort Valley State on November

2 will be aired on ESPN3 as part of the SIAC Football ESPN agreement. SSU’s appearances on FloSports includes games with Benedict (Sep-tember 21), Morehouse (Sept. 28), Clark Atlanta (Oct. 19) and Albany State (Oct. 26).

PRO TIESDefensive coordinator/defensive line coach Thomas Sims and linebacker coach Marquis Smith both played professional football. Sims, a sixth round draft pick in the 1990 NFL draft played with the Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts and the Minnesota Vikings. Smith played a year in the Indoor Football League with the Bismark Bucks and one year in the National Arena League with the Jacksonville Sharks.

HOME GROWNSSU has eight players in its roster from six different of the local high schools, Islands, Savannah Christian, Johnson, Windsor Forest, Memorial and Jenkins.

THE SIZE OF ITOffensive linemen Michael Johnson and Bryan Manuel-Mots are both the tallest players on the team at 6-7 but Manuel-Mots is the biggest at 330Ilbs. Wide receiver Dorian Metts is the shortest player on the roster at 5-7 while fellow wide receiver James Kicklighter is the lightest at 150Ilbs.

FAN FRIENDLYThe 2019 SSU football schedule is fan friendly. Other than the trip to Alcorn State, the remaining road games are within an four hour driv-ing distance.

helmets and instead will wear royal blue helmets which contains the SSU athletic logo.

HE’S BACKJoshua Peacock is Savannah State’s new Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations. Peacock is no stranger to SSU, having served as the Assistant Media Relations Director under Mr. Mashariki from 2012-15.

HOMECOMINGSSU has seven players on the roster from South Carolina. Three of them are from Charleston: Tim Campbell, Dominique Kershaw and Bernard Brown

STATISTICALLY SPEAKINGSSU is ranked first in total defense in the SIAC while being second in scoring defense and rush defense. The Tigers are also second in scor-ing offense and rush offense.

DOUBLE DUTYNot only is SSU’s Joe Boykin a wide receiver on the football team. He is also a member of the SSU men’s basketball squad.

HOLD THAT LINESSU’s offensive line is holding its own this season and has only giving up one sack thus far

FAMILIAR TERRITORYDuring the 2012 season, SSU head coach was the Charleston Southern

defensive coordinator while SSU safeties coach Zack Johnson played linebacker for the Buccaneers (2012-15). Johnson played in 48 games and made 167 tackles.

PICK SIXFor the second week in a row, a SSU player returned a interception for a touchdown. Last week against Morehouse, AJ Beach returned a interception 25 yards for a score. The week before that Chris Smith returned a interception 43 yards for a touchdown.

PLAYING WITH A CHIPDuring the preseason predictions, SSU was picked to finish last in the SIAC Eastern Division. Albany State was picked to win the division followed by Benedict, Morehouse, Fort Valley State, Clark Atlanta and SSU. In addition, no SSU player was selected to the preseason all conference team.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN The Tigers are playing the third game of a five game road trip that started on September 21.

STREAKIN’The Tigers have won three games in a row. The last time a SSU team won three in a row was during the 1998 season when they defeated Clark Atlanta, Lane and Morehouse in consecutive weeks.

A YEAR AGOSavannah State defeated Charleston Southern for the first time last sea-son 23-3. The Tigers limited CSU to 123 total yards of offense (90 passing and 33 rushing).

YOU CAN GET ANYWHERE FROM HEREFormer SSU defensive lineman General Decar Brown is the director of operations for the Boys & Girls Club in Florence, South Carolina. Brown was a all conference lineman for the Tigers who signed a free agent contract with the then Los An-geles Rams in 1990. Brown went on to play professionally in the World League of American Football and in the Arena Football League before retiring.

INTER-DIVISIONALThe last time SSU beat a Division I program, playing as a Division II program, was in 1992. Under leg-endary coach Bill Davis, the Tigers beat Central Florida 33-31. They also beat D-1 Bethune-Cookman that year 31-21 and the previous year 35-20.

BUCCANEER CONNECTIONNew safeties coach Zach Johnson met head coach Sean Quinn while playing at Charleston Southern in 2012. Quinn was the Defensive Coordinator. Johnson played for the Bucs from 2011-2016.
